New Zealand’s native conifer flora is dominated by the Podocarpaceae family — ancient southern hemisphere conifers that formed the canopy of the Gondwana forest. Totara (Podocarpus totara), Rimu (Dacrydium cupressinum), Kahikatea (Dacrycarpus dacrydioides) and the great Kauri (Agathis australis) carry deep cultural significance for Māori and represent some of the most distinctive conifers available for cool-temperate Australian cultivation.
