Angophora costata, commonly known as the Smooth-Barked Apple or Sydney red gum, is a tree species native to the coastal regions of eastern Australia. It is widely cultivated for its ornamental value, and wood is used for various purposes, including flooring, furniture, and firewood.
Angophora costata can grow up to 30 meters in height but is often smaller in cultivation. It has a spreading habit, with a maximum spread of 20 meters, but usually less in cultivation. It has a rounded canopy and a smooth, greyish-brown bark. The leaves are dark green, lance-shaped, 6-16 cm long and 2-3 cm wide. They are borne opposite each other on the stem. The flowers are white and very showy, produced in large bunches on terminal corymbs or short panicles.
The tree prefers well-drained soils rich in organic matter and is tolerant of many soils, including sandy and clay soils. It prefers full sun to partial shade and is drought-tolerant once established. The preferred pH range is slightly acidic to neutral, between 5.5 and 7.0.
When planting Angophora costata, it is essential to provide it with plenty of room to grow, as it can reach a height of 15-30 metres and a spread of 10-15 meters. It is also essential to ensure that the soil is well-prepared and that the tree is planted at the same depth as in the container. After planting, it is vital to water the tree well and provide it with adequate moisture until it is established.
It is also important to note that Angophora costata is subject to damage from pests and diseases, such as scale insects, so it’s best to check with your local gardening organization or government agency for recommendations on managing these issues in your area. Additionally, the tree is known for its shallow root system, so care should be taken when planting near buildings or other structures to avoid damage.
This product is not available to customers in SA and TAS, as it is part of the Myrtaceae family.
