If you are looking to buy a Japanese White Pine in Australia that truly stands out from the crowd, the ‘Fukai’ cultivar is an absolute showstopper. While standard White Pines are prized for their solid blue foliage, the ‘Fukai’ features spectacular, irregular bands of creamy-yellow across its new growth. When viewed from above, this creates a mesmerising, glowing “Dragon Eye” effect that slowly fades to a classic blue-grey as the foliage hardens off in winter.
- Striking 'Dragon Eye' Variegation: When viewed from above, the bold creamy-yellow banding on the blue-green needles creates a mesmerising glowing effect that shifts and intensifies with the seasons.
- True Dwarf Habit: An exceptionally slow-growing pine that pushes only minimal growth each year, making it incredibly easy to maintain its shape in a confined bonsai pot or courtyard tub.
- A Rare Collector's Specimen: Due to the precise grafting required and its extremely slow growth rate, authentic 'Fukai' stock is highly sought after and notoriously difficult to source in Australia.
- Dense Five-Needle Clusters: Like all premium Japanese White Pines, it produces soft, brush-like clusters of five needles, allowing bonsai artists to create tightly refined, cloud-like foliage pads.

Detailed Description and Specs
The Pinus parviflora ‘Fukai’ is a notoriously difficult cultivar to source in Australia due to its exceptionally slow growth rate (often only pushing 15–20cm annually) and the precise grafting required to maintain its striking variegation. It eventually forms a broad, upright, and spreading habit that is highly architectural.
Because of its compact nature, the ‘Fukai’ is highly favoured by bonsai artists who want to create a dramatic, high-contrast display. These 200mm specimens from our Victorian grower offer an incredible foundation for styling, complete with the peace of mind that all rigorous Tomato Potato Psyllid (TPP) biosecurity treatments have been expertly managed by our team.
Care and Planting Guide
The ‘Fukai’ is a highly rewarding but slightly more demanding cultivar than the standard White Pine, primarily due to its striking variegation. The golden bands lack chlorophyll, meaning the tree needs careful placement to thrive in the Australian climate.
- Sunlight & Location: While pines love full sun, the variegated needles of the ‘Fukai’ are susceptible to scorching in extreme summer heat. Position it where it receives plenty of morning sun but is protected from the harsh, late-afternoon westerly sun (especially in places like inland NSW or SA).
- Soil & Drainage: Superior drainage is absolutely critical. Like all Japanese White Pines, it will rapidly decline if its roots are left sitting in waterlogged soil. If planting in the ground, mound the soil or ensure it is heavily amended with coarse grit. For bonsai, use a highly porous, aggregate-heavy mix.
- Watering: Water thoroughly, allowing the top layer of soil to dry out between waterings. Be mindful not to overwater during the slower winter months.
- Pruning: Because the ‘Fukai’ is a dwarf variety that grows exceptionally slowly, pruning should be minimal and highly deliberate. Simply pinch back the spring candles to maintain their compact shape and encourage denser budding.
