The Nothofagus obliqua is a deciduous giant native to the majestic Andean forests of Chile and Argentina. In Spanish, it is commonly called “Roble” (meaning Oak) due to the incredible strength of its timber, or “Hualle” when referring to young trees. Unlike some of the more temperamental evergreen southern beeches, the Patagonian Oak boasts fantastic climatic plasticity, showing much greater suitability across a broader range of Australian cool-temperate conditions, very similar to Nothofagus glauca.
It is celebrated globally for its deeply fissured bark and its stunning, serrated leaves that erupt into a fiery spectacle of gold, bronze, and deep red in autumn. Because it is a naturally vigorous species, our 140mm stock is already well-developed, standing up to 75cm tall. Detailed Description and Specs
The Nothofagus obliqua (Patagonian Oak, Roble, or Pellín) is a magnificent, fast-growing deciduous tree belonging to the Nothofagaceae family. Native to the temperate Valdivian forests of central Chile and adjacent Argentina, it is a vital component of the Gondwanan floral heritage.
In the wild, it can reach towering heights of up to 40 metres, developing a massive trunk with deeply fissured, greyish-brown bark. The leaves are alternating, ovate, and beautifully serrated with distinct, prominent veining. Unlike many of its evergreen Australian cousins, the Roble Beech is deciduous. In autumn, the foliage transforms from deep green into a breathtaking array of vibrant golds, bronzes, and fiery reds. The tree produces small, inconspicuous flowers followed by tiny nutlets enclosed in cupules.

The Patagonian Oak exhibits excellent plasticity, making it one of the more adaptable and rewarding Nothofagus species to cultivate in Australia.
- Sunlight & Location: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Young plants benefit from dappled light or protection from the harshest afternoon summer sun until their deep root systems are established. Ensure it has ample space to accommodate its large mature canopy.
- Soil & Drainage: It thrives in deep, fertile, moisture-retentive loams. While it is more adaptable than other beeches, it requires good drainage and will suffer in stagnant, waterlogged clay.
- Watering: It requires consistent moisture, particularly during the hot Australian summer. Apply a thick layer of organic mulch (such as leaf mould or compost) to keep the root zone cool and insulated.
- Pruning: Minimal pruning is required. It naturally develops a strong, dominant central leader and a well-spaced branching structure.
