A NOTE ON SHAPE: THIS IS A NON-TRADITIONAL TREE
The Stone Pine (Pinus pinea) has a charming, rustic, and open shape when young. It does not have the classic, dense conical form of a traditional Christmas tree. Its foliage in juvenile form is a beautiful blue-green, becoming darker with age. Please review the product images to appreciate its unique character.
Pot Size: 250mm
Approx. Height: 80-90cm
For the discerning gardener who delights in the wonderfully unique, the Stone Pine is the perfect, character-filled choice for a living Christmas tree. This is the famed “Umbrella Pine” of the Mediterranean, the very same species that produces delicious, edible pine nuts. When young, it has a charmingly rustic, open form—think of it as the beloved “Charlie Brown” tree, full of personality and a beautiful blue-green hue. It is not a traditional fir, but something much more special: a slow-growing, incredibly hardy, and long-term investment in both beauty and future harvests for your garden.
- A unique and charming living Christmas tree with a beautiful, rustic blue-green form.
- The authentic source of edible pine nuts for future harvests.
- Exceptionally hardy and drought-tolerant once established, perfect for hot Australian climates.
- A very slow-growing pine, making it ideal for long-term life in a decorative pot.
- A wonderful conversation piece and a sustainable, edible addition to your garden.

Detailed Description and Specs
The Stone Pine (Pinus pinea) is an icon of the Mediterranean landscape, instantly recognisable for its unique, umbrella-like canopy when mature. For thousands of years, it has been cultivated for its delicious and highly prized edible seeds: pine nuts – the very same you find in authentic Italian pesto!
As a young plant, it has a wonderfully quirky and open structure with distinctive blue-green needles. We feel it’s important to set expectations: this is not the dense, perfectly conical tree of Christmas tradition. Instead, it offers a more organic, rustic charm. It’s the perfect choice for someone looking for a festive tree that is different, authentic, and offers a wonderful story. Being the slowest-growing pine and incredibly drought-hardy, it’s an ideal candidate for a feature pot in a coastal, hot, or dry climate where other conifers might struggle. You’ll find these beautiful pines thriving in many parts of South-Eastern Australia, from the Southern Highlands to the ACT and Snowy regions.
Here’s why we think you’ll love the Stone Pine Potted Christmas Tree:
- Species: Pinus pinea (Stone Pine, Italian Stone Pine, Umbrella Pine)
- Key Feature: Produces edible pine nuts; very slow-growing; distinctive blue-green juvenile foliage.
- Form: Open and rustic when young, maturing to an iconic umbrella shape.
- Hardiness: Excellent for hot, dry, and coastal Australian climates.
- Edible Harvest: The source of authentic Italian pine nuts – a gourmet addition to your garden!
Care and Planting Guide
The Stone Pine is a famously hardy tree that thrives on sun and good drainage.
Location: This tree absolutely loves the sun. Give it the sunniest position you can, both indoors for Christmas and outdoors in the garden. It is an excellent choice for hot, sun-drenched balconies, courtyards, or open garden spaces.
Soil & Watering: Excellent drainage is the number one requirement. It absolutely cannot tolerate “wet feet,” which can lead to root rot. Use a very sandy, free-draining potting mix. Water thoroughly, but then allow the soil to dry out significantly before watering again. It is very drought-tolerant once established in the ground.
Planting Out: When grown in the ground, the Stone Pine can eventually develop a wide, umbrella-shaped canopy, providing fantastic shade. Ensure it has ample room to spread (up to 6-12m wide). While robust, its wide canopy can make it prone to toppling in extremely strong winds once mature, so consider its placement carefully.
Harvesting Pine Nuts: Patience is key! A Stone Pine needs to reach maturity before it will produce cones with viable nuts, which can take several years (typically 15-20 years from seed, but faster from established trees). Growing your own is a wonderful long-term project for a dedicated foodie and gardener.

Shipping and Delivery
Shipping to Biosecurity States (TAS, NT, WA) Shipping our living trees to these states is a complex process that requires adherence to strict quarantine laws. We have two pathways to achieve this, depending on stock availability from our network of certified growers.
- If we can source your tree from a certified partner nursery, the process is streamlined, though state government inspection fees may still apply.
- If we need to ship from our own stock, the tree will require a special third-party treatment and certification process, which incurs significant additional costs.
Therefore, we ask all customers in TAS and NT to please contact us before placing your order. This allows us to confirm the best and most cost-effective shipping pathway available for you and provide an accurate quote.
A Note for WA Customers: Due to the extremely strict biosecurity regulations for Pinus species in Western Australia, and the high likelihood of plants failing inspection at the border, we are unfortunately unable to ship Stone Pine trees to Western Australia. We sincerely apologise to our WA customers for this.
