The Benchmark European Spruce

The Norway Spruce (Picea abies) is the reference point for all classic conifers. Famed as the traditional European Christmas tree, it is a formidable, fast-growing landscape powerhouse that develops a dense, perfectly conical form. As it matures, it produces gracefully drooping secondary branchlets on ascending main limbs, creating an elegant, layered silhouette adorned with the longest pendulous cones of any spruce. We source robust 140mm and 300mm starters, alongside massive ex-ground specimens, directly from our trusted premium networks across Victoria and the NSW Southern Highlands.

Exceptional vigour—capable of pushing over 1 metre of growth annually once established.
Thrives across diverse profiles, from mineral sandstones to pure, rich basalt.
Sourced through trusted cool-climate networks to ensure hardened, resilient stock.
Not a true pine (genus Picea), meaning full, legal Concierge access to WA and NT.

There is a reason the Norway Spruce (Picea abies) is the undisputed benchmark of cold-climate landscape design. While it holds enduring cultural fame as the traditional European Christmas tree, its true value lies in its sheer performance as a landscape specimen. Clad in deep-green, four-sided needles, it drives upward with incredible speed, forming a dense, impenetrable cone before developing elegant, weeping secondary branchlets as it matures.

From our own experience here in the NSW Southern Highlands, Picea abies is an absolute powerhouse. We have watched specimens planted from 300mm and 400mm pots push well over a metre of growth in a single year on-site. Just around the corner from our nursery, trees planted from 200mm starters have rocketed to 6 metres tall and begun producing their iconic, long pendulous cones in under ten years. There is a mature boulevard of these trees in nearby Kangaloon that looks straight out of a European storybook.

Perhaps its greatest strength is its adaptability. We have seen the Norway Spruce shrug off both La Niña deluges and El Niño droughts. It dominates in the mineral sandstone and heavy clay of Berrima, thrives in the transitional shale of Mittagong, and explodes with growth in the pure, rich basalt of Robertson. Sourced from our trusted premium networks, these starters are primed to establish a formidable, generational presence in your landscape.

  • Explosive Growth Rate: One of the fastest-growing spruces available; routinely pushes over 1 metre of vertical growth annually in favourable climates once its root system is established.
  • Incredible Soil Adaptability: Highly resilient across difficult soil profiles, thriving in everything from heavy clays and mineral sandstones to rich volcanic basalts.
  • The Benchmark Silhouette: Provides the quintessential conical conifer shape in youth, transitioning to a highly sophisticated layered canopy with weeping branchlets in maturity.
  • The Classic Christmas Tree: The traditional festive spruce. Its dense structure and deep green needles make it an exceptional living Christmas tree that can be held potted for several seasons.

★★★★★
"The growth rate on these is staggering. I planted a row of 300mm stock along our windbreak, and they have genuinely grown over a metre in height this past year despite our clay soil."
— Richard M., Acreage Owner, Ballarat, (VIC)
★★★★★
"We used them as living Christmas trees on the patio before planting them out in the paddock. They survived an incredibly wet La Niña winter without batting an eye. Formidable trees."
— Kerry J., Landscaper, Sutton Forest, (NSW)
★★★★★
"Sourced through SVF's Concierge to WA. Because it's not a pine, it cleared quarantine with no issues. It's now establishing beautifully in our cooler southwest garden."
— Ian C., Conifer Collector, Manjimup, (WA)
How fast will a 140mm or 300mm starter grow?
Picea abies is renowned for its vigour. Once its roots are established in the landscape (typically by its second year in the ground), it is not uncommon for the Norway Spruce to push 1 metre or more of vertical growth annually under favourable conditions. We have seen 200mm starters reach 6 metres within a decade.
Can I use this as a living Christmas tree?
Absolutely. The Norway Spruce is the traditional European Christmas tree. It can be kept in a decorative pot for several seasons to be brought indoors for short periods during the festive season. Keep it well-watered and ensure it spends the rest of the year outdoors in full sun.
Will it tolerate heavy clay or poor soils?
Yes. It is highly adaptable. While it prefers rich, moist, well-draining loams, we have observed it thriving equally well in the mineral sandstones, transitional shales, and heavy clays of the NSW Southern Highlands.
Can this be shipped to Western Australia and the Northern Territory?
Yes. The strict WA and NT biosecurity bans apply specifically to the Pinus genus (true pines). The Norway Spruce belongs to the genus Picea, meaning it is exempt from that prohibition and can be legally and safely shipped to WA and NT via our standard Plant Concierge pathway.

Detailed Description and Specs

The Norway Spruce (Picea abies) is an essential component of the cold-climate landscape palette. Endemic to Northern, Central, and Eastern Europe, it is a species that has been cultivated for centuries for its timber, its resonance in tonewood for stringed instruments, and its architectural grandeur. In the landscape, it functions perfectly as a fast-growing windbreak, an acoustic barrier, or a standalone majestic specimen.

Our standard 140mm and 300mm starters are sourced from trusted premium growers across Victoria and New South Wales. For large-scale landscape projects, our specialist network can also supply advanced specimens—ranging from 100L up to 400L bags, and field-grown stock up to 4 metres tall. Whether you are planting a single living Christmas tree or designing a storybook estate boulevard, Picea abies delivers scale, speed, and resilience.

Here’s why we think you’ll love the Norway Spruce:

  • Species: Picea abies (Norway Spruce / European Spruce)
  • Provenance: Sourced via our trusted cool-climate network (VIC/NSW)
  • Growth Rate: Very Fast; capable of >1m of growth annually once established
  • Foliage & Cones: Deep-green, four-sided needles; produces the longest pendulous cones of any spruce (up to 15cm+)
  • Best For: Storybook boulevards, fast windbreaks, large estate specimens, and living Christmas trees

Care and Planting Guide

The Norway Spruce is a remarkably rugged conifer, proven to withstand both incredibly wet (La Niña) and highly dry (El Niño) cycles.

  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun for the densest, most symmetrical growth. It will tolerate light shade, though the canopy may become more open over time.
  • Soil Adaptability: Highly versatile. It thrives in rich volcanic basalts, but performs exceptionally well in heavy clay, transitional shale, and mineral sandstone. Avoid planting in permanent, stagnant bogs.
  • Watering: Water deeply during the first two years to establish a resilient root system. Once anchored, it is remarkably self-sufficient and drought-hardy.
  • Spacing: If planting as a dense screen or windbreak, space trees 3 to 4 metres apart. For a grand, sweeping specimen tree, allow at least 8 to 10 metres of clearance.

Shipping and Delivery

Eastern States (NSW, ACT, VIC, QLD, SA)
Eligible for standard shipping via our secure specialist plant freight network. We dispatch robust stock directly from our trusted premium networks, allowing for seamless delivery to the Eastern States without additional biosecurity treatment.

Tasmania (TAS)
Because Norway Spruce is available through our Tasmanian-certified VIC grower network, eligible orders can travel the direct certified pathway into Tasmania. However, Bass Strait freight carries a baseline cost. To ensure the shipping cost per plant is economically viable for you, this direct route requires a minimum volume—typically a mixed order of 6 to 8 x 200mm pots, or a few 300mm pots. Orders below this volume are handled through our Plant Concierge.
Note for advanced stock: We maintain a premium on-island Tasmanian supplier network that frequently holds large 400mm bags. If you want an advanced specimen, we can often source it directly for you to collect locally within TAS, bypassing the Bass Strait freight entirely. Start your enquiry at Plant Concierge.

Western Australia & Northern Territory (WA & NT)
Shipping to WA and NT is safely handled through our Plant Concierge. Because the Norway Spruce is a Picea and not a true pine (Pinus), it is completely exempt from the strict state pine bans. A licensed quarantine specialist carries out all mandatory treatments and inspections under your state’s protocol before they’re forwarded to you. Start your enquiry at Plant Concierge.
