A Living Relic of the Prehistoric Canopy

To plant a Bunya Pine (Araucaria bidwillii) is to anchor your landscape with a true prehistoric giant. Revered by the Indigenous peoples of South East Queensland for its highly nutritious, massive seed cones, and heavily utilised in 19th-century colonial estate plantings from Macarthur to Tasmania, it is a tree of immense cultural and historical significance. At Sequoia Valley Farms, we specialise in cultivating Bunya Pines with exceptional cold tolerance, actively collecting seed from 130-year-old local Southern Highland specimens that have spent over a century adapting to deep southern frosts. Whether you are building an acreage food forest with our robust 140mm/200mm stock, or require towering 8-metre ex-ground specimens for an instant commercial landscape, our multi-state network has the capacity to deliver.

The Bunya Pine (Araucaria bidwillii) is not a tree for the standard suburban backyard. It is a towering, magnificent survivor from the Jurassic era that demands space and respect. Famously, mature trees drop massive, football-sized cones weighing up to 10kg, packed with delicious, highly nutritious nuts that have a flavour and texture blending roasted chestnuts and pine nuts. This makes it an incredibly sought-after species for permaculture projects and large-scale native food forests.

While native to Queensland, the Bunya Pine has proven remarkably adaptable. By actively collecting seed from heritage colonial plantings in our local Mittagong region, we provide stock that is already genetically primed for cold southern winters. Whether you want to buy a Bunya Pine to begin a generational food forest, or require massive ex-ground specimens sourced from our QLD/NSW/VIC network for a commercial landscape, we are Australia’s premier supplier for this ancient species.

  • The Bunya Nut: Produces giant cones containing 50-100 edible nuts. Highly nutritious, delicious when roasted or boiled, and a staple of high-end native bush tucker.
  • Southern Cold-Adaptation: Propagated from 130-year-old local Mittagong heritage trees, our seed-grown stock is genetically adapted to handle deep frosts and cold southern winters.
  • Massive Landscape Specimen Access: Bypassing standard retail limitations, we can source and freight 400mm to 8m tall ex-ground Bunya Pines for high-end commercial estates.
  • Unbreakable Resilience: Once established, its sharp, rigid foliage and deep root system make it virtually impenetrable to pests, highly wind-resistant, and deeply drought-hardy.

How long does it take for a Bunya Pine to produce edible nuts?
Bunya Pines are a generational investment. They typically begin producing cones between 14 and 20 years of age, depending on soil quality and climate. They operate on a mast-year cycle, meaning they produce bumper crops every two to three years.
Are they dangerous to plant near houses?
YES. Mature Bunya Pines drop massive, heavy cones (up to 10kg) from heights of 20 metres or more. You must never plant a Bunya Pine near a house, driveway, car park, or pedestrian walkway. They belong in open paddocks, food forests, or grand avenues with plenty of clearance.
Will they survive frost in the ACT, Southern NSW, Victoria or Tasmania?
Yes. While native to Queensland, Bunya Pines were planted heavily across southern Australia during the 1800s and adapted brilliantly. Because we often source our seed from 130-year-old local trees in the cold Southern Highlands, our stock possesses excellent inherent frost tolerance.
Can you supply advanced and or mature trees for landscaping?
Yes. Through our multi-state network (QLD, NSW, VIC), we have access to advanced stock ranging from 300mm pots to 8-metre-tall ex-ground trees. These require specialist heavy freight. Please contact us for a commercial landscape quote.

Detailed Description and Specs

The Bunya Pine (Araucaria bidwillii) is a massive, evergreen coniferous tree belonging to the ancient Araucariaceae family, dating back to the Mesozoic Era. It features a distinctive, symmetrical, dome-shaped canopy that is unmistakable on the Australian skyline.

The leaves are glossy, lance-shaped, and incredibly sharp and rigid. However, the tree is most famous for its reproductive cycle. It produces massive green seed cones that can weigh up to 10 kilograms. For thousands of years, these cones were the centrepiece of the great Bunya gatherings for Indigenous Australians, where tribes would travel hundreds of kilometres to harvest and feast on the highly nutritious, delicious seeds.

Here’s why we reckon you’ll want to buy a Bunya Pine for an Australia Gondwana-themed garden:

  • Species: Araucaria bidwillii (Bunya Pine)
  • Foliage: Sharp, rigid, glossy green lanceolate leaves arranged spirally on the branchlets.
  • Cones/Nuts: Produces colossal cones containing 50–100 edible nuts (resembling a cross between a chestnut and a pine nut).
  • Bark: Dark brown/black, thick, and deeply peeling in rough horizontal scales.
  • Best For: Acreage planting, native food forests, agroforestry, and heritage landscape restoration.

Care and Planting Guide

The Bunya Pine is an incredibly tough, resilient survivor, but site selection is the absolute most critical part of planting this species.

  • Site Selection (CRITICAL): This tree will grow to 40 metres tall and drop 10kg cones. Do not plant it anywhere near buildings, roofs, driveways, boundary fences, or areas where people or animals congregate. It requires a massive, open space.
  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun but will easily tolerate partial shade, particularly when young.
  • Soil & Drainage: Highly adaptable. It thrives in deep, rich basalt soils but will happily grow in poor, rocky, or sandy soils provided drainage is adequate. It is remarkably adaptable to varying pH levels.
  • Watering: Water deeply during the first two years to establish the root system. Once mature, its deep taproot makes it exceptionally drought-hardy.
  • Pruning: Never prune the leader (the central growing tip) or the tree will lose its magnificent symmetrical structure. The lower branches will naturally self-prune and drop off as the canopy rises.
