Detailed Description and Specs
The Giant Redwood (Sequoiadendron giganteum), also known as the Giant Sequoia, is a true icon, native to a small pocket of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. It holds the record as the largest living thing on the planet by volume. Its reddish-brown trunk is famously thick and fibrous, and its dense, blue-green foliage forms a perfect, stately cone.
It is uniquely suited to the climate zones of southeastern Australia, thriving from Tasmania, through the Adelaide Hills, and up into the cooler, less humid areas of the Great Dividing Range and ACT tablelands.
It is more tolerant of frost and diurnal temperature fluctuations than the Coastal Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), making it the superior choice for many inland Australian gardens. To stand at the base of a mature Giant Redwood is a humbling and unforgettable experience, and planting one is a profound act of connection to the natural world.
Here’s why we think you’ll love the Giant Redwood for sale in Australia:
- Species: Sequoiadendron giganteum (Giant Redwood or Giant Sequoia)
- Growth Rate: Very Fast (can grow over 1m per year in ideal conditions).
- Foliage: Dense, scale-like blue-green needles.
- Key Feature: The most massive tree species on Earth; a true legacy tree.
- Best For: Large gardens, acreages, arboretums, and as a statement feature tree.
Care and Planting Guide
The Giant Redwood is surprisingly adaptable and vigorous in many parts of Australia, provided it is given the two things it needs most: sun and space.
A VERY IMPORTANT NOTE ON LOCATION: This is not a tree for a small suburban backyard. You must plant it with its ultimate, immense size in mind. It needs to be planted well away from buildings, power lines, and property boundaries. It is a tree for a large garden, parkland, or acreage where its powerful root system and massive form have room to develop over the centuries.
Sun & Soil: It thrives in full sun and prefers deep, well-draining soil. While it can tolerate a range of soil types, it will perform best with regular, deep watering, especially during its first few summers as it establishes its root system.
Growth Rate: Be prepared for rapid growth. In good Australian conditions, it is not uncommon for this tree to gain more than 60cm in height per year in its youth, quickly becoming a significant and beautiful landscape feature.

Shipping and Delivery
As Australia’s connoisseurs of this majestic species, we have developed several pathways to get your Giant Redwood to you safely.
Interstate Courier Shipping (140mm & 200mm) The 140mm and 200mm sizes can be shipped to most eastern states via our trusted courier network. For biosecurity states, this requires our Plant Concierge Service, which incurs significant additional costs. Please contact us for a quote before ordering.
A Note for WA Customers: While Sequoiadendron giganteum is a permitted species, shipping our larger pot sizes to WA is complex. The 200mm size is available via a specialised freight service to Welshpool, but this is a costly process. The 140mm size can be sent via our Plant Concierge service, but is subject to size limits for Australia Post. Please contact us before placing an order for WA to discuss the best and most cost-effective option.
Local Delivery & HQ Pickup (All Sizes) All sizes, including our well-developed 300mm specimens, are available for our dedicated local delivery service and for pickup from our HQ in Mittagong.
A Note for Tasmanian Customers: We can often leverage our local supplier network to arrange for you to collect your plant directly from a nursery in Tasmania, potentially including larger sizes. Please contact us to discuss this option.
