★★★★★
"To find a Mt. Read provenance specimen on the mainland is incredible. The packaging ensured the soil stayed perfectly damp during transit. A true legacy tree for my collection."
— Mark T., Regional VIC
How fast does the Huon Pine grow?
Extremely slowly. In cultivation on the mainland, you can expect only a few centimetres of growth per year, making it an ideal long-term subject for pots or serious bonsai development.
Can I grow this in a warmer coastal climate?
Huon Pines are strictly cool-climate trees. They will struggle in hot, humid, or dry regions unless grown in a highly sheltered, micro-climate environment with constant moisture and complete protection from the afternoon sun.
Are these grown from seed or cuttings?
The majority of our stock is expertly propagated by our prestigious Tasmanian growers. We also offer a select reserve of cuttings and seed-grown specimens cultivated directly from the mature male and female Huon Pines residing on our own estate.

Detailed Description and Specs

The Huon Pine (Lagarostrobos franklinii) is a legend of the plant world. Endemic to the wild, cool-temperate rainforests of Tasmania, individual trees can live for over 3,000 years, making them one of the oldest living things on Earth. Its timber is prized for its fine grain and natural oils, but the living tree is a treasure of unparalleled significance.

Our connection to this species runs deep. We work exclusively with Tasmania’s most respected propagators and horticulturists, who have deep ties to the conservation of iconic flora. Our standard 140mm and advanced 200mm specimens boast local southern Tasmanian provenance. On rare occasions, we are even able to offer special 140mm XL specimens propagated from the legendary, ancient Huon Pine of Mt. Read. This means the plants we offer have an unbroken chain of expert care, from the Tasmanian wilderness to your garden.

Here’s why we think you’ll love the Huon Pine:

  • Species: Lagarostrobos franklinii (Huon Pine)
  • Provenance: Southern Tasmanian sourcing & legendary Mt. Read lineage.
  • Growth Rate: Extremely Slow (often only a few centimetres per year).
  • Foliage: Dense, dark green, scale-like leaves.
  • Best For: Cool-temperate gardens, pots, and as a premier bonsai specimen.

Care and Planting Guide

The Huon Pine is a resilient species, but like any aristocrat, it has specific preferences that must be met to ensure its health and longevity on the mainland.

  • Sunlight & Location: It requires a cool, moist, and sheltered position, protected from hot, drying winds and the harshest afternoon sun. Dappled morning light is ideal.
  • Soil & Drainage: It thrives in well-draining, acidic soil that is rich in organic matter.
  • Watering: This is the most critical factor. The Huon Pine is a rainforest species that demands consistent moisture. The soil should be kept damp at all times, but not waterlogged. Regular watering, primarily through summer, is essential. It cannot tolerate its roots drying out.
  • Bonsai Cultivation & Pruning: The Huon Pine is a world-class bonsai subject. Its slow growth, delicate foliage, and ancient character are highly prized. A very free-draining mix is crucial to prevent root rot. The wood is flexible when young but becomes very stiff, so shaping the trunk and primary branches should be done early.
