Podocarpus elatus, also known as the Illawarra Plum Pine, is a coniferous tree native to eastern Australia. It grows along the coast and inland ranges from the South Coast of NSW into southern QLD. Due to its stately form and height, it is often used as an ornamental tree in landscaping, streetscapes and horticulture. It is known for its glossy green leaves and small, fleshy edible fruit. Traditional landowners eat the fruit as a food source, and are now most prominently used to create jams and condiments. Its juicy, pulpy fruits have a grape-like texture and sweetish, mild pine flavour that is enhanced by cooking. As this species is dioecious, both male and female plants are needed to produce seed and fruit.
It prefers well-drained soils with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. The tree is very hardy and can tolerate many soil types, including sandy and clay. It can also tolerate drought and frost conditions.
In terms of light, it prefers full sun to partial shade and can grow well in hot and cool climates. It’s a slow-growing tree that requires minimal maintenance. It’s drought tolerant once established and can be pruned to shape if desired. The tree is also tolerant of coastal conditions and can be planted as a specimen tree in extensive gardens, parks and street trees.
When planting, it’s recommended to dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and mix the removed soil with compost or well-rotted cow manure. To ensure the tree is well-watered, place a layer of mulch around the base, but keep it away from the trunk.
