The Ultimate Coastal Native and Timber Pine

At Sequoia Valley Farms, botanical accuracy matters. The true Coast Cypress Pine (Callitris columellaris sensu stricto) is frequently confused with its inland desert cousin. However, this specific, magnificent variety is native to the coastal fringes and sandy soils of northeast New South Wales and southeast Queensland. Widely known as the Bribie Island Pine or Coast Cypress, it evolved to thrive against salt spray, coastal winds, and sandy loams, while still producing the legendary dense, termite-resistant timber the genus is famous for. We cater to all scales of planting for this coastal sentinel. We are currently growing a boutique batch of 200mm specimens (standing 60–90cm tall) right here in Mittagong, which will be ready for winter dispatch. Concurrently, we leverage our elite East Coast supply network to fulfil bulk orders for landscape architects, coastal councils, and large acreage projects, offering highly advanced 300mm and 400mm stock.

Coastal resilience — thrives in sandy soils and effortlessly handles coastal winds and salt spray
Commercial scale — supplying bulk orders of advanced 300mm and 400mm stock across the East Coast
Botanical integrity — guaranteed Callitris columellaris sensu stricto (eastern coastal genetics)
Renowned timber species — produces some of the hardest, most naturally durable softwood in the world

NAVIGATING THE GENUS*
*Many nurseries lump all White Cypress pines together. Please note this page is specifically for Callitris columellaris sensu stricto (the coastal variety from NE NSW/SE QLD). If you are looking for the inland desert/outback variety, please view our Callitris glaucophylla page.

The Coast Cypress Pine (Callitris columellaris) is a breathtaking architectural feature of Australia’s eastern seaboard. Unlike fragile exotic conifers that burn in salty air, this native species is a coastal powerhouse. It features dense, billowed, aromatic dark green foliage and deeply furrowed bark. Its wood is famously dense, producing natural resins that make it highly resistant to termites and decay—qualities that have made it a historic favourite for coastal boardwalks, piers, and fine furniture.

Because of its incredible resilience in sandy, free-draining profiles, it has become a highly sought-after species for coastal acreage owners needing reliable windbreaks, and municipal councils requiring low-maintenance, salt-tolerant street trees. Whether you are pre-ordering our 200mm winter stock for a native garden, or requesting a bulk commercial quote for dozens of advanced 400mm landscape trees, if you want to buy a Coast Cypress Pine, SVF has the logistics and network to deliver.

  • Coastal & Salt Tolerant: Evolved on the eastern seaboard, it handles coastal breezes, salt spray, and sandy, free-draining soils with absolute ease.
  • Termite-Resistant Timber: The timber is naturally infused with resins that repel termites and borers, making it legendary for long-lasting fencing and construction.
  • Bulk Commercial Supply: We cater to massive landscape briefs, utilising our East Coast network to supply advanced 300mm and 400mm specimens.
  • The Ultimate Windbreak: Its dense, columnar habit and stabilising root system make it an exceptional shelter belt tree for exposed coastal or acreage properties.

"We needed advanced, salt-tolerant native conifers for a coastal council parkland project. SVF sourced spectacular 400mm Callitris columellaris trees through their commercial network. Flawless execution and incredible quality."
— Brendan K. — Commercial Landscaper, Central Coast (NSW)
★★★★★
"I specifically needed the true Bribie Island Pine (sensu stricto) for my sandy block, not the inland variety. SVF knows their genetics. The 200mm plants are thriving in the sandy loam and coastal winds."
— Melinda D. — Acreage Owner, Sunshine Coast (QLD)
★★★★★
"Finding true coastal Callitris columellaris for a native timber plantation trial was proving difficult. SVF provided beautiful, healthy stock that established immediately. Very impressive nursery operation."
— Keith M. — Native Forestry Enthusiast, Northern Rivers (NSW)
Is this the same tree as the inland White Cypress or Murray Pine?
No. Botanically, the inland outback variety is classified as Callitris glaucophylla. This page is strictly for Callitris columellaris (sensu stricto), also known as the Coast Cypress Pine or Bribie Island Pine, which originates from the coastal regions of northern NSW and southeast QLD.
Will this grow in sandy coastal soils?
Yes! Unlike many conifers that require rich mountain loams, the Coast Cypress Pine evolved specifically on the sandy soils and coastal dunes of the eastern seaboard. It requires excellent drainage and is highly tolerant of salt-laden winds.
How do I order the advanced 300mm or 400mm trees?
Advanced commercial sizes are sourced directly from our premium East Coast network and are designed for landscape, council, and acreage bulk planting. They cannot be shipped via standard couriers. Please contact us directly for a custom commercial quote and heavy freight logistics.
Can you ship the 200mm stock to WA, TAS, or NT?
Yes. Because our 200mm stock is grown locally at our Mittagong estate and sits between 60-90cm tall, it comfortably clears the 105cm maximum height limit for Express Post. All orders to these states must pass through our Plant Concierge for mandatory biosecurity treatments.

Detailed Description and Specs

The Coast Cypress Pine (Callitris columellaris sensu stricto) is a majestic evergreen conifer native to the coastal regions of northeastern New South Wales and southeastern Queensland. It is frequently referred to as the Bribie Island Pine or Coast Cypress.

The tree typically grows with a single, straight trunk, forming a graceful, columnar-to-narrowly pyramidal canopy. Its foliage consists of tiny, scale-like leaves arranged in whorls of three, creating dense, aromatic, rich green branchlets. The bark is dark brown, deeply furrowed, and rugged. It produces small, woody, globular seed cones that can persist on the branches for many years. The timber is exceptionally dense, highly aromatic (often compared to camphor), and naturally infused with resins that make it highly resistant to termites and marine borers.

  • Species: Callitris columellaris (Coast Cypress Pine / Bribie Island Pine)
  • Origin: Coastal NE NSW and SE QLD.
  • Foliage: Dense, scale-like aromatic green needles.
  • Cones: Small, woody, globular seed cones.
  • Best For: Coastal windbreaks, sandy soils, native timber plantations, and large landscape architecture.

Care and Planting Guide

This species evolved to survive coastal extremes, making it highly rewarding for challenging maritime or sandy sites.

  • Sunlight & Location: Must be planted in full sun. It is highly wind-resistant and makes an exceptional shelterbelt or boundary screen for exposed coastal acreage.
  • Soil & Drainage: It is a champion of sandy, free-draining coastal profiles. It adapts well to other soil types, provided drainage is excellent. Do not plant in heavy, waterlogged clay, as the roots will quickly rot.
  • Watering: Water deeply during the first 12 months to encourage a strong root system. Once established, it is highly self-sufficient and requires minimal supplementary watering.
  • Pruning: Requires very little maintenance. It naturally holds its dense, columnar shape. Lower branches can be pruned “up” if a clean, clear trunk is desired for timber or aesthetic purposes.
