Detailed Description and Specs

The Myrtle Beech (Nothofagus cunninghamii) is an iconic evergreen tree of Australia’s cool temperate rainforests, found in the wild corners of Tasmania and Victoria. As a member of the southern beeches, its ancestry stretches back millions of years to the supercontinent of Gondwana, making it a true living fossil.

Its beauty lies in its fine, elegant details: small, glossy, triangular leaves held on delicate, layered branches. Having spent years studying and propagating this genus, I’ve observed that our specimens in the Southern Highlands exhibit remarkable vigour, often producing larger leaves and up to three distinct growth flushes a year. This is a testament to the quality of our stock, which we source from our premier supplier network, who are key figures in Tasmanian plant conservation. This is your opportunity to own a mainland-grown specimen with a direct link to this world-class expertise.

Here’s why we think you’ll love the Myrtle Beech for sale:

  • Species: Nothofagus cunninghamii (Myrtle Beech)
  • Provenance: Sourced from Tasmania’s most elite conservation propagators.
  • Care Level: Intermediate to Advanced.
  • Foliage: Small, triangular, glossy, deep-green leaves.
  • Best For: Cool-temperate gardens, pots in cool climates, and as a premier bonsai specimen.

Care and Planting Guide

An Important Note on Care: This is a Rainforest Species.

Success with Myrtle Beech on the mainland depends on replicating its native cool, humid, and moist environment. It is not suitable for hot, dry climates.

Climate & Location: This tree demands a cool-temperate climate with four distinct seasons. It will not survive the prolonged heat and humidity of coastal NSW (including Sydney), Queensland, or WA. It needs a sheltered position, protected from hot, dry winds and the fierce afternoon sun.

Soil & Drainage: This is non-negotiable. It requires constantly moist, highly organic, acidic soil with perfect drainage. While it loves water, it is very susceptible to root rot in boggy or heavy clay soils. For potting, a specialised, free-draining mix for acid-loving plants is essential.

Watering: The soil should never be allowed to dry out completely. A deep watering once the top few centimetres are barely moist is a good rule of thumb. Consistent moisture is the key to avoiding stress and dieback.

For more information, we have a detailed care guide available on our blog.

Shipping and Delivery

As one of the few mainland specialists for this species, shipping our Myrtle Beech requires a carefully managed process.

Shipping to Biosecurity States (WA, NT) As this tree is rarely available from certified nurseries, shipping to Western Australia and the Northern Territory requires our full Plant Concierge Service. This involves sending the tree to our Queensland facility for treatment and inspection on set dates, which incurs significant additional costs. Please get in touch with us before placing your order for a detailed quote.

A Note for Tasmanian Customers: For our Tasmanian customers, we can often utilise our local supplier network to arrange for direct collection of your plant from a nursery in Tasmania, saving on complex shipping costs. We may also be able to source larger sizes. Please get in touch with us to discuss this option.
