Detailed Description and Specs

The Noble Fir (Abies procera) is a majestic conifer native to the high-altitude Cascade and Coast Range mountains of the Pacific Northwest in North America. Its name, “procera,” means tall, and in its native habitat, it is a true giant of the forest. For Christmas, it is prized above all others for its uniquely stiff, evenly spaced branches, which are strong enough to support even the heaviest of ornaments.

While notoriously difficult to cultivate in many parts of Australia, we have found them to be surprisingly resilient and successful here in the cool, four-season climate of the Southern Highlands and the Central Tablelands. Our stock is well-acclimatised and has proven its ability to thrive in local conditions, making it a rare opportunity for Australian gardeners in suitable cool-climate regions to grow this magnificent specimen.

Here’s why we think you’ll love the Noble Fir Potted Christmas Tree:

  • Species: Abies procera (Noble Fir)
  • Key Feature: Superior branch strength for heavy ornaments
  • Care Level: Intermediate to Advanced; requires a cool climate
  • Foliage: Blue-green needles with a silvery stripe underneath

Care and Planting Guide

The Noble Fir is a rewarding tree for an attentive gardener in the correct location. It is less finicky than a Korean Fir but does require specific conditions.

Location, Location, Location: A True Cool-Climate Tree. This is the most critical factor for success. The Noble Fir will not tolerate hot, humid summers found in places like coastal Sydney, Brisbane, or Perth. It is best suited for gardens in true cool temperate regions, such as the Southern Highlands, Blue Mountains, Central and Southern Tablelands, Snowy-Monaro, ACT-Brindabella and surrounds, the New England region, Victorian Alps, the Snowy Mountains region, and Tasmania.

Care During Christmas: Indoors, provide a very bright, cool location away from any heat sources. The soil must be kept consistently moist but have excellent drainage.

Planting After Christmas: If you choose to plant your Noble Fir, remember it has the potential to become a very large tree over many decades. It requires a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining, acidic soil. It performs best in areas that receive some winter chill and do not experience extreme, dry summer heat.

Shipping and Delivery

Due to its rarity and size, shipping this specialist tree is a complex process.

Local Delivery & HQ Pickup The 300mm Noble Fir is available for our dedicated local delivery service and for pickup from our HQ in Mittagong.

Shipping to Biosecurity States (TAS, NT) As this tree is rarely available from our certified supplier network, shipping to Tasmania and the Northern Territory requires our full Plant Concierge Service. This involves sending the tree to our Queensland facility for treatment and inspection on set dates, which incurs significant additional costs. Please contact us before placing your order for a detailed quote.

A Note for WA Customers: Due to the large size of this tree, it exceeds the maximum parcel dimensions for Australia Post, which is the required shipping method for this certification pathway to WA. Therefore, we are unfortunately unable to ship the Noble Fir to Western Australia.
