The Outeniqua Yellowwood (Afrocarpus falcatus) is a tree that commands respect. In its native South Africa, it forms the backbone of the ancient Afromontane forests. In Australia, it has proven itself to be an incredibly versatile, highly adaptable landscape specimen. The foliage is elegant—narrow, sickle-shaped, and dark green—while female trees produce fleshy, bright yellow seed arils that attract native birdlife. As the tree matures, its bark flakes away in fascinating, multi-coloured plates.
Because of its unique characteristics, it appeals to a wide variety of growers. We routinely supply 20–25cm tubestock to bonsai practitioners who prize its reducing foliage, as well as South African expats wanting a piece of home. For commercial projects, we bypass standard retail limitations entirely. If you want to buy an Outeniqua Yellowwood that is already a towering 350L landscape statement for a luxury driveway or urban development, our premium Sydney supply network has the stock ready to deploy.

- Massive Landscape Scale: We have direct access to 75L, 200L, and massive 350L bagged specimens for instant, high-end architectural impact.
- Bonsai Perfection: Its sickle-shaped leaves, dense branching, and naturally flaking bark make it a highly prized, responsive species for bonsai artists.
- Ornamental Yellow Fruit: Female trees produce highly distinctive, fleshy yellow, cherry-like seed arils that provide beautiful seasonal contrast and attract birdlife.

Detailed Description and Specs
The Outeniqua Yellowwood (Afrocarpus falcatus, formerly Podocarpus falcatus) is a majestic, evergreen conifer belonging to the Podocarpaceae family. Native to the Afromontane forests of South Africa, it can reach towering heights of up to 45 metres in the wild, though it typically settles between 15 to 25 metres in Australian cultivation.
The foliage consists of narrow, flat, sickle-shaped (falcate) leaves that are grey-green to dark green. The trunk is highly ornamental; the purplish-brown bark flakes off in round or rectangular plates, exposing smooth, lighter patches beneath. On female trees, the seeds are entirely enclosed in a fleshy, bright yellow, cherry-like covering that is highly decorative.
- Species: Afrocarpus falcatus (Outeniqua Yellowwood)
- Foliage: Narrow, falcate (sickle-shaped), dark green evergreen leaves.
- Bark: Purplish-brown, flaking off to reveal smooth, textured patches.
- Fruit: Distinctive, fleshy, round yellow seed arils (on female trees only).
- Best For: SA heritage gardens, commercial landscapes, avenue planting, and bonsai.
Care and Planting Guide
The Outeniqua Yellowwood is surprisingly adaptable to Australian conditions, making it an excellent urban and rural landscape tree.
- Sunlight & Location: Thrives in full sun but will tolerate partial shade, especially when young. It grows into a very large tree, so ensure adequate space away from house foundations and plumbing.
- Soil & Drainage: Highly versatile. It performs best in deep, well-draining, slightly acidic soils rich in organic matter, but it will tolerate poorer, sandy, and clay-based soils once established.
- Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the first few years to establish a strong root system. Once mature, it exhibits excellent drought tolerance and handles periods of dry heat very well.
- Frost Tolerance: Mature trees can handle moderate frosts (down to around -5°C). However, young tubestock should be protected from heavy, direct frost during their first winter in the ground.
