The Definitive Winter Sculpture.
Betula papyrifera—the Paperbark Birch—is one of the most iconic trees of the North American boreal forest. In the Australian landscape, it represents a dramatic, architectural alternative to the common European Silver Birch. Unlike its weeping counterpart, the Paperbark Birch stands upright and is defined by its extraordinary luminous white bark, which peels away in satisfying papery layers to reveal warm orange-buff tones beneath. This makes it one of the very few deciduous trees where the trunk itself is the primary, 365-day ornamental feature. As a fast-growing, strict cool-climate specialist, it requires genuine winter chilling to perform at its peak, transforming into a canopy of bright golden-yellow in autumn. Supplied as Premium field-grown bare root stock by our specialist Victorian grower network, this 25-specimen allocation is an essential acquisition for landscape designers and collectors looking to create striking multi-stem grove effects.

BARE ROOT ESTABLISHMENT: DISPATCHING LATE JULY 2026*
*Your tree will arrive fully dormant—a bundle of clean roots and a structured woody cane. This is the safest, most efficient state for a deciduous tree to travel. Plant within 48 hours of receipt for immediate establishment before the spring flush.
For decades, Australian gardeners seeking a white-trunked tree have defaulted to the European Silver Birch (Betula pendula). While lovely, its deeply fissured, black-and-white bark and weeping habit offer a very specific aesthetic. For serious landscape designers and collectors, the North American Paperbark Birch (Betula papyrifera) is the far superior architectural choice.
The Paper Birch grows with a stronger, more upright habit, but its true masterpiece is its trunk. The bark is a luminous, stark white that peels off in curling, horizontal papery strips. As it sheds, it reveals striking, warm orange-buff underlayers. This dynamic, continuously renewing texture means the tree is breathtaking in the depths of winter when entirely leafless. In autumn, the foliage ignites into a bright, clear golden-yellow. Whether planted as a solitary specimen or grouped closely to create a multi-stemmed grove, our limited allocation of Premium bare root Betula papyrifera offers a rare opportunity to acquire a genuine cold-climate icon.
- Peeling Papery Bark: The definitive feature of this species. The brilliant white bark continuously peels in thin layers, revealing warm orange tones beneath for year-round interest.
- The Upright Alternative: Unlike the common European Silver Birch which possesses a weeping canopy and darker fissured bark, the Paper Birch boasts a cleaner, distinctively upright habit.
- Golden Autumn Canopy: Provides a fast-growing, brilliant display of bright golden-yellow leaves before dropping them to reveal its structural winter skeleton.
- Yose-ue (寄せ植え) Bonsai Potential: While highly sought after for large landscape groves, the straight, clean trunks make it an exceptional candidate for tertiary bonsai use in 'forest' Yose-ue (寄せ植え) style compositions.

Detailed Description and Specs
The Paperbark Birch (Betula papyrifera) is a fast-growing deciduous tree native to the northern United States and Canada, where it dominates the boreal forest landscapes. Belonging to the Betulaceae family, it is revered worldwide for its extraordinary bark.
Unlike trees grown purely for their spring flowers or autumn foliage, the Paperbark Birch is a true year-round architectural feature. Its luminous white bark continuously sheds in thin, horizontal papery layers, exposing warm orange and buff tones beneath. This dynamic texture is unmatched by the more common European Silver Birch. In autumn, the upright canopy transforms into a vibrant, bright golden-yellow. For landscape designers, grouping several of our Premium bare root specimens together creates a stunning, naturalistic grove effect that reads as a piece of sculpture in the depths of winter.
- Species: Betula papyrifera (Paperbark Birch / Paper Birch)

- Autumn Colour: Bright golden-yellow.

Care and Planting Guide
The Paperbark Birch is a fast-growing tree that establishes rapidly from bare root stock, provided it is situated in an appropriate cool-climate environment.
- Climate Reality: This species must experience cold winters. It is highly suited to the Southern Highlands, ACT, alpine Victoria, and Tasmania. It will suffer from heat stress and borers if planted in hot, coastal, or humid subtropical climates.
- Sunlight & Location: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Due to its striking bark, it is best planted against a dark evergreen backdrop to make the white trunks visually “pop.”
- Soil & Drainage: Adaptable to varying soil types but performs best in consistently moist, slightly acidic, well-draining soils. While it tolerates damp areas better than many deciduous trees, avoid stagnant waterlogging.
- Watering: Its natural habitat is relatively moist. Ensure deep, consistent watering during the hot Australian summer, especially during its first two years of establishment. Heavy mulching will help keep the root zone cool.
