At Sequoia Valley Farms, our supply network is built to service every tier of the Australian landscape industry. For collectors and acreage owners, we cultivate robust 200mm specimens (standing 80-90cm tall) right here in the cool climate of Mittagong, ensuring they are toughened up for southern gardens. For landscape architects, municipal councils, and major commercial developments, we leverage our elite East Coast network to supply advanced bagged stock—from 45L up to massive 500L ex-ground trees standing 4 metres tall. We also maintain a specialised, TAS-certified Victorian supply line for direct island deliveries. Whatever your project requires, we are the ultimate authority on sourcing and supplying the Kauri Pine.

ACCLIMATIZED FOR THE SOUTH*
*While native to QLD, this species shows incredible climate plasticity. During sharp winters (below -2°C), our Mittagong-grown specimens may develop a striking dark purple flush and minor tip burn—a natural cold-weather response that they easily push through in spring.

The Queensland Kauri Pine (Agathis robusta) is not your typical needle-bearing conifer. It features broad, thick, glossy green leaves and a magnificent, smooth, mottled grey trunk that rises like a massive cylindrical column. It is a tree that demands attention, making it a historic favourite for botanical gardens, grand municipal parks, and luxury acreage driveways.

To ensure our clients have absolute flexibility, our supply chain is highly diversified. We source premium tubestock and grow them on in the challenging climate of the Southern Tablelands, producing incredibly resilient 200mm trees. Concurrently, we utilise our extensive eastern seaboard network to fulfil massive commercial landscape briefs. Whether you are a home gardener wanting to buy a Kauri Pine to anchor your Gondwana collection, or a landscape architect requiring a dozen 4-metre ex-ground trees for a major civil project, SVF has the logistics and the stock to execute.

  • Commercial & Civil Supply: We are equipped to handle large-scale landscape briefs, offering massive 45L to 500L bagged and ex-ground trees across NSW, VIC, and QLD.
  • Cool-Climate Plasticity: Cultivated in the frosty Southern Highlands, our 200mm stock is hardened to survive southern winters and light snowfalls.
  • Architectural Symmetry: Famous for its incredibly straight, columnar trunk that sheds its lower branches naturally, leaving a clean, majestic profile.
  • Certified TAS Delivery: We utilize TAS-certified Victorian growers to supply advanced 1.5m to 2m tall specimens directly to Tasmania without quarantine delays.

★★★★★
"We required a row of highly advanced Agathis robusta for a commercial estate entrance. SVF coordinated the heavy agricultural freight for six 400L bags. The quality of the ex-ground trees was world-class."
— Simon D. — Landscape Architect, Sydney (NSW)
★★★★★
"I wanted a Kauri Pine for my property in the Southern Highlands, but worried about the frost. SVF's 200mm acclimatised stock survived multiple -3C mornings and a light dusting of snow. The purple winter foliage is actually beautiful."
— Rebecca L. — Acreage Owner, Sutton Forest (NSW)
★★★★★
"Getting advanced Kauri Pines into Tasmania is usually a logistical nightmare. SVF used their certified VIC supplier to send us 2-metre tall trees that bypassed biosecurity perfectly. Exceptional network."
— Craig W. — Council Landcare, Launceston (TAS)
How do I order the massive 500L or ex-ground trees?
Advanced commercial sizes (45L up to 500L) cannot be shipped via standard couriers. We coordinate specialist heavy landscape freight for these trees directly from our network across NSW, VIC, and QLD. Please contact us directly for a custom commercial quote.
Will a Queensland native survive in the cold south?
Yes! Agathis robusta has excellent climate plasticity. We specifically grow our 200mm stock outdoors in the frosty Southern Highlands to acclimatise them. Note: In temperatures below -2°C, the leaves may take on a dark purple hue and show minor tip burn, but the tree will reliably recover and flush green in spring.
Does it drop messy needles?
No. The Kauri Pine is a broadleaf conifer. Instead of tiny needles, it drops larger, leathery leaves and is actually "self-pruning," meaning it sheds its lower branches as it grows, maintaining its famously clean, cylindrical trunk.
What sizes are available for TAS, WA, and NT?
For TAS, we can supply up to 2m tall (330mm pots) directly from our certified VIC partners. For WA and NT, only our 200mm stock (80–90cm tall) can be shipped via the Plant Concierge, as larger bagged trees physically exceed the 105cm maximum length limit for Express Post.

Detailed Description and Specs

The Queensland Kauri Pine (Agathis robusta) is a majestic, long-lived evergreen conifer native to the tropical and subtropical rainforests of eastern Queensland. It is a true Gondwana survivor, closely related to the famous Kauri giants of New Zealand.

The most striking feature of the Kauri Pine is its incredibly straight, smooth trunk, which appears almost completely cylindrical and lacks lower branching in maturity. The bark is a beautiful mottled grey and brown, gently flaking away. The foliage is thick, leathery, and dark, glossy green, arranged in opposite pairs. It produces distinct, spherical to egg-shaped seed cones that disintegrate on the tree to release winged seeds.

  • Species: Agathis robusta (Queensland Kauri Pine)
  • Foliage: Broad, thick, leathery, dark glossy green leaves.
  • Bark: Smooth, mottled grey-brown, shedding in small scales.
  • Growth Habit: Very tall, straight, cylindrical trunk with a dense, spreading crown.
  • Best For: Grand avenues, large acreage, municipal parks, and commercial landscape features.

Care and Planting Guide

While native to warmer climates, the Kauri Pine adapts beautifully to southern regions if given the right start.

  • Sunlight & Location: Performs best in full sun to partial shade. Due to its massive mature size, it must be planted well away from houses, foundations, and overhead power lines.
  • Soil & Drainage: Highly adaptable, but thrives in deep, rich, well-draining soils with high organic matter. It will tolerate poorer soils provided it has access to moisture.
  • Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the establishment phase (first 2-3 years). Once its deep root system is established, it is moderately drought-tolerant.
  • Cold Climate Care: If planting in areas prone to heavy frost (like the Southern Highlands or VIC), young trees may experience winter foliage burn or purple discolouration. Apply a thick layer of organic mulch to insulate the roots during winter.
