Cultivate the Ultimate Native Spice
While commonly famous as the “Tasmanian Pepperberry,” Tasmannia lanceolata (or Mountain Pepper) is actually a spectacular native that grows wild right here in the misty gullies of the Southern Highlands, stretching all the way down the cool-climate east coast to Tasmania. At Sequoia Valley Farms, we celebrate both genetic lines and offer an unmatched range of sizes. For standard planting, we offer dedicated 140mm grades: Medium (25–35cm) and Large (50–65cm). For those needing instant impact, we cultivate and source advanced 200mm local stock standing up to 1m tall. Furthermore, for our Tasmanian clients and landscape architects, we utilise our local island network to supply massive 400mm specimens reaching 1.5m tall, completely bypassing Bass Strait. Featuring stunning crimson-red stems and the capacity to produce incredibly aromatic black berries, this is a must-have native feature.

A NOTE ON BERRIES & POLLINATION*
*Tasmannia lanceolata is dioecious (separate male and female plants). Because our stock is an unsexed mix of seed-grown and cutting material, we strongly recommend purchasing 3 to 5 plants to ensure you get both males and females for berry production.
The Mountain Pepper (Tasmannia lanceolata) is riding a massive wave of popularity, and for good reason. It is one of the most versatile and rewarding native plants you can grow. Visually, it is an absolute standout. The vivid, crimson-red stems pop brilliantly against the lush, dark green, lance-shaped foliage. In spring, the plant produces clusters of creamy-yellow to white flowers, which, if successfully pollinated, develop into clusters of deep purple-black berries by autumn.
Culinary enthusiasts highly prize both the leaves and the berries. When dried and crushed, they release a complex, fruity, and fiery heat that outperforms commercial black pepper. Whether you are a home gardener wanting a few 140mm starters or a landscape architect requiring a row of massive 200mm (or 400mm for TAS locals) instant-impact screens, if you want to buy a Tasmanian Pepperberry plant, we have the precise scale and provenance you need.
- The Ultimate Native Spice: Harvest the berries and leaves to dry and crush into "Mountain Pepper," a fiery, aromatic spice coveted by high-end chefs.
- Advanced Landscape Sizing: We go beyond standard tubestock. We offer advanced 200mm (1m tall) mainland plants and direct-to-TAS massive 400mm (1.5m tall) specimens.
- Proven Local Genetics: Our supply chain taps into both premium Tasmanian alpine networks and highly vigorous, locally acclimatised Southern Highlands mainland stock.
- Striking Ornamental Value: Even if you don't harvest the spice, the vivid red branches, creamy spring flowers, and black autumn berries make it a stunning garden feature.

Detailed Description and Specs
The Tasmanian Pepperberry or Mountain Pepper (Tasmannia lanceolata) is a highly ornamental, evergreen shrub native to the cool-temperate rainforests and alpine gullies of southeastern Australia, from the Southern Highlands of NSW down through Victoria and across Tasmania.
It is immediately recognisable by its striking, crimson-red branches and dark green, lance-shaped (lanceolate) leaves. In spring, it produces clusters of small, creamy-yellow to white flowers. Being dioecious, male plants produce flowers with prominent stamens, while female plants produce flowers that eventually swell into small, fleshy, dark purple-to-black berries in autumn. Both the foliage and the berries contain polygodial, a compound that gives the plant its famous fiery, peppery bite.
- Species: Tasmannia lanceolata (Mountain Pepper / Tasmanian Pepperberry)
- Foliage: Dark green, leathery, lance-shaped leaves on vivid red stems.
- Flowers: Clusters of small, creamy-yellow/white blooms in spring.
- Fruit: Fleshy, pea-sized black peppery berries (on female plants only).
- Best For: Bush tucker gardens, instant native screening, and ornamental shrubberies.
Care and Planting Guide
Mountain Pepper is a highly rewarding plant when placed in an environment that mimics a cool, moist rainforest understory.
- Sunlight & Location: Performs best in dappled shade or morning sun. While it can handle full sun in cooler regions like Tasmania, mainland growers should protect the plant from harsh, direct afternoon summer sun to prevent the leaves from scorching.
- Soil & Drainage: Prefers deep, rich, friable loams with high organic content. Excellent drainage is critical, as it is susceptible to root rot in heavy, waterlogged clay.
- Watering: It is not drought-tolerant. The root system is relatively shallow and must be kept consistently moist during the summer. Apply a thick layer of organic mulch (leaf litter or compost) to insulate the roots and retain moisture.
- Pruning & Harvesting: Responds very well to pruning. Tip-prune regularly to encourage dense, bushy growth. Leaves can be harvested year-round, while berries are harvested in autumn.
