A Living Fossil. A Genuine Responsibility.

To grow a Wollemi Pine (Wollemia nobilis) is to become the custodian of one of the most significant botanical discoveries of the twentieth century — a Gondwana lineage that survived the last ice age in a single hidden canyon in the NSW Blue Mountains, unknown to science until 1994. Sourced from a specialised Victorian conservation nursery, our strictly limited annual allocation ensures each plant carries a verifiable line of expert care. Arriving as established 65–75cm specimens approximately three years old, these are trees with a genuine story and genuine substance.

The Wollemia nobilis — the Wollemi Pine — is not merely a rare plant. It is a Gondwana survivor: a species whose lineage extends back over 90 million years, known to science only from fossil records until David Noble’s 1994 discovery of a hidden wild population in a remote canyon of Wollemi National Park, New South Wales. The location of the wild grove remains a closely guarded secret — one of the most protected botanical sites on Earth — to prevent the introduction of pathogens to a population that cannot afford any losses. Every tree you plant is part of an ex-situ conservation buffer that genuinely matters.

  • Gondwana Lineage: Not a marketing claim — a geological fact. This species predates the dinosaurs' extinction, confirmed by 90-million-year-old fossil records.
  • Conservation Propagation: Sourced from a specialized Victorian conservation nursery, not scaled for mass commercial volume.
  • Container Proven: The Australian Botanic Garden has maintained Wollemi Pines in pots for over two decades — ideal for balconies and courtyards.
  • Distinctive Foliage: Flat, fern-like fronds of bright lime-green new growth maturing to deep olive — unlike any other conifer in cultivation.

The Wollemi Pine’s prehistoric character pairs naturally with other ancient Australian lineages — or provides a striking structural contrast to cool-climate broadleaf specimens.

★★★★★
"I've been searching for established Wollemi Pine stock at this size for years. The 70cm specimen is in excellent health, already pushing strong new lateral growth. An extraordinary tree to hold stewardship over."
— Richard B. — Rare Plant Collector, Bowral (NSW)
★★★★★
"We planted two as feature specimens in a cool-climate rainforest garden. The foliage texture is completely unlike anything else in cultivation — prehistoric in the best possible sense."
— Fiona and Simon M. — Keen Gardeners, Daylesford (VIC)
★★★★★
"The fact that these come from a specialised conservation nursery (Trenton Cottage) was the deciding factor. I didn't want stock from an unknown source. This tree has the lineage and health to back it up."
— James O. — Botanical Garden Volunteer, Mount Gambier (SA)
How rare is the Wollemi Pine in the wild?
Extraordinarily rare. When discovered in a hidden canyon in Wollemi National Park in 1994, there were fewer than 100 mature trees. The wild location remains a strictly guarded secret to protect the population. Every Wollemi Pine in cultivation descends from that original discovery, propagated to build a conservation buffer outside the wild stand.
Is it difficult to grow in Australian conditions?
It is more forgiving than many expect, provided one key rule is respected: protect it from direct, harsh afternoon sun, especially when young. In its natural canyon habitat, it grows as a sheltered understorey species. It handles frost once established and tolerates a range of soils, provided drainage is excellent.
Why is stock so limited?
Unlike mass-produced nursery stock, our Wollemi Pines are sourced from Trenton Cottage, a specialised Victorian conservation nursery uniquely certified by the DPI to cultivate this protected species. Because they are grown for conservation rather than commercial volume, our annual allocation arrives as genuine 3-year-old, 65–75cm established specimens. Every tree includes an official certificate of authenticity and detailed provenance information. Please note: once our seasonal allocation is sold out, we cannot source more until the following year.
Can I grow a Wollemi Pine in a container long-term?
Yes — the Australian Botanic Garden at Mount Annan has maintained container-grown Wollemi Pines for over 20 years. Key rules: don't overpot (match pot size to root mass to prevent boggy conditions), use an ericaceous or slightly acidic premium potting mix — not native plant mixes, which are too low in phosphorus — and repot every two years. Supplement with fortnightly liquid feeds during active growth and biostimulant products, including humic acids and seaweed extracts.

Detailed Description and Specs

The Wollemia nobilis belongs to the ancient family Araucariaceae — the same lineage as the Hoop Pine, Kauri, and Bunya Pine — and represents one of the most significant plant discoveries of the modern era. Native to a single hidden sandstone canyon in Wollemi National Park, NSW, its wild population of fewer than 100 mature trees is one of the most protected botanical sites on Earth.

Here’s why we think you should buyWollemi Pine:

  • Family: Araucariaceae — one of the most ancient conifer families on Earth.
  • Provenance: Cultivated stock descending from the original 1994 discovery, sourced via our Victorian conservation network.
  • Foliage: Flat, fern-like fronds of bright lime-green new growth maturing to deep olive-green.
  • Bark: Develops distinctive bubbly, chocolate-brown bark with age.
  • Multi-Stemmed: Naturally produces multiple leaders, creating a distinctive candelabra silhouette in mature specimens.
  • In Cultivation: Reaches 10–15m tall × 3–4m wide; successfully maintained in containers for 20+ years.

Care and Planting Guide

While ancient and resilient, the Wollemi Pine requires specific early care to successfully establish in a landscape setting.

  • Sunlight & Location: Grow in dappled shade or morning sun with afternoon protection — especially in the first two to three years. In hotter inland regions, afternoon shade is non-negotiable.
  • Soil & Drainage: Requires well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0–7.0). For container growing, use an ericaceous potting mix certified to Australian Standards — do not use native plant mixes, which are too low in phosphorus.
  • Watering: Keep consistently moist but never waterlogged. It does not tolerate prolonged dry periods at the root zone. Mulch heavily in summer to moderate root temperature.
  • Fertilising: Apply a balanced controlled-release fertiliser annually in early spring. Supplement with liquid feeds and biostimulants (seaweed extracts) during active growth.
  • Repotting: Never pot into a container significantly larger than the root mass — excess soil volume retains moisture the roots cannot absorb, creating an immediate root rot risk.
