The Bonsai Holy Grail: Buy Yatsubusa Pine in Australia
The Pinus thunbergii ‘Yatsubusa’ is one of the most revered Japanese Black Pine cultivars in existence. Translating to “many buds” in Japanese, this exceptional dwarf variety is famous for pushing prolific clusters of buds from a single node and producing incredibly short, dense needles. We source these highly sought-after, advanced 60–70cm starters from our premium Victorian growers, expertly managing all TPP biosecurity requirements so you receive world-class bonsai material ready for immediate styling.

If you are looking to buy a Yatsubusa Pine, you are securing a tree that most bonsai artists spend years trying to track down. While standard Black Pines require decades of intense styling to reduce their needle size and force internal branching, the ‘Yatsubusa’ is genetically programmed to do the hard work for you. Because it is a true dwarf that grows very slowly, securing an advanced starter in the 60–70cm range gives you a massive developmental head start.
- The 'Multi-Budding' Trait: Naturally pushes dense clusters of buds from single nodes, creating tight, highly refined foliage pads with minimal effort.
- Naturally Short Needles: Saves years of intensive decandling work by genetically producing needles that are significantly shorter than standard Black Pines.
- Elite Collector's Material: An advanced 60–70cm dwarf specimen represents years of careful nursery cultivation, making it a highly prized addition to any bench.
- Rugged Coastal Resilience: Retains the legendary toughness of the Japanese Black Pine, handling heat, drought, and salt spray with absolute ease.

Detailed Description and Specs
The magic of the Pinus thunbergii ‘Yatsubusa’ lies in its name. In Japanese, 八房 “Yatsubusa” refers to its unique ability to push multiple buds from a single node, resulting in incredibly dense, tightly packed foliage pads that look ancient and refined even on younger trees.
100% Seed-Grown: The Bonsai Purist’s Dream
Many commercial dwarf pines are grafted onto standard rootstock to speed up production. However, this creates a permanent, unsightly graft scar at the base of the trunk, severely diminishing the tree’s value for premium bonsai.
Our Victorian network propagates these highly coveted starters directly from ‘Yatsubusa’ seed. This guarantees a perfectly smooth, unblemished lower trunk and allows the artist to develop a flawless, spreading root flare (nebari). Combined with their advanced 60–70cm height, these seed-grown starters offer an incredibly rare foundation ready for heavy wiring and elite styling.
Both methods produce world-class bonsai material, and at 60–70cm tall, these starters offer thick, established trunks ready for heavy wiring and immediate styling.
Care and Planting Guide
While the ‘Yatsubusa’ offers a massive shortcut to a refined bonsai, it still requires classic pine care to maintain its health and vigour.
- Sunlight & Location: They demand maximum, full sun exposure. The more direct sunlight the tree receives, the shorter the needles will stay and the more prolific the back-budding will be.
- Soil & Drainage: Fast drainage is non-negotiable. Ensure your bonsai mix is highly aerated by blending pumice, scoria, and akadama to encourage a fine, fibrous root system.
- Watering: Water deeply until it runs out of the drainage holes, but allow the soil to dry out significantly before watering again. Pines hate sitting in consistently wet, boggy soil.
- Pruning: While they naturally bud heavily, you will still need to perform seasonal decandling (removing the central, strongest spring buds) to distribute the tree’s energy evenly across the smaller, weaker shoots.
