Eucalyptus delegatensis, also known as Alpine Ash Tree in NSW and ACT and Woollybutt in Victoria, is a magnificent native Australian Eucalyptus tree found exclusively in southeastern Australia. The Alpine Ash is widespread and often the most prominent tree in grassy and wet sub-alpine forests. It is common in NSW and ACT in the Brindabella Ranges, typically between 900m and 1500m above sea level, and in Victoria in the Macedon Ranges.

Tree Height and Spread

Alpine Ash is one of the tallest eucalyptus species, typically reaching 40 to 60 metres in optimal conditions. In some exceptional cases, it can grow up to 90 metres. The tree develops a straight, sturdy trunk with rough, grey to black, fibrous or stringy on the lower half of the trunk, smooth white to greyish above.

The Alpine Ash tree can have a variable spread but usually forms a broad canopy that spans 10 to 20 meters. This wide canopy offers great shade and shelter, making it a valuable addition to large gardens and landscapes in cool climates.

Preferred Soil Type

Alpine Ash is adaptable to various soil types but thrives best in deep, fertile, well-drained soils. It prefers loamy soils soils rich in organic matter. These soils provide the necessary nutrients and aeration for the tree’s extensive root system to develop and sustain its impressive height and spread.

While the tree can tolerate clay soils, it performs poorly in compacted or saturated conditions. Ensuring good drainage is crucial to prevent root rot and other moisture-related issues. If planting in heavy soils, consider amending the soil with organic matter or installing drainage systems to enhance its suitability for Alpine Ash.

Preferred pH

Alpine Ash grows well in soils with a pH range of 5.5 to 6.5, slightly acidic to neutral. This pH range ensures that the essential nutrients are available for uptake by the tree’s roots. Regular soil testing can help maintain the pH within the optimal range, and appropriate soil amendments can be applied to adjust the pH if necessary.

Planting and Care

Planting Site: Choose a site with full sun to partial shade, ensuring the tree receives at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Alpine Ash is well-suited to cool temperate climates and can withstand frost and snow, making it ideal for high-altitude regions. Most suitable areas include the Macedon Ranges, Victorian Alpine and High Country, the Southwest slopes, Southern tablelands / Southern Highlands, Central and Northern Tablelands in New South Wales and the ACT.

Watering: Young Alpine Ash trees require regular watering to establish a robust root system. Water deeply and consistently during the first few years, especially during dry spells. Once established, the tree becomes more drought-tolerant but will benefit from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.

Mulching: Apply a thick layer of organic mulch around the tree’s base, extending to the drip line. Mulch helps retain soil moisture, suppresses weeds, and provides a steady supply of nutrients as it decomposes. Keep the mulch a few centimetres away from the trunk to prevent rot and pests.

Pruning: Prune young trees to establish a strong, single trunk and remove competing leaders. Regularly remove dead, damaged, or diseased branches to maintain the tree’s health and structure. Minimal pruning is required once the tree matures, as it naturally develops an attractive form.

Fertilising: Fertiliser is not usually required. If your soil is poor in nutrients,  fertilise the Alpine Ash with a balanced, slow-release native fertiliser during the growing season to promote healthy growth. Avoid excessive fertilisation, which can make weak, fast-growing shoots susceptible to pests and diseases.

Pest and Disease Management: Alpine Ash is generally resilient to pests and diseases. However, monitor for signs of common eucalyptus pests, such as lerps, psyllids, and beetles. Implement integrated pest management practices, including promoting beneficial insects and applying appropriate treatments if infestations occur.

Benefits and Uses

Alpine Ash is highly valued for its timber used in construction, flooring, and furniture due to its strength and durability. Its majestic appearance makes it popular for ornamental planting in large gardens, parks, and landscapes in cool temperate regions. The tree provides habitat and food for various wildlife, contributing to biodiversity.
