Eucalyptus cinerea is a new species in our range. They have been freshly potted to 140mm and will be available in mid-September for release. Pre-orders are open.
Eucalyptus cinerea, commonly known as the Argyle Apple, is endemic to southeastern Australia. It is a small to medium-sized tree widely cultivated for its attractive silvery-grey foliage and distinctive aroma.
It has rough, fibrous bark on the trunk and branches, usually only juvenile, glaucous, egg-shaped evergreen leaves, flower buds in groups of three, white flowers and conical to bell-shaped fruit.
Here is some useful plant-growing information about Eucalyptus cinerea:
Tree height and spread: It can reach a height of 20-30 feet (6-9 meters) with a spread of 10-20 feet (3-6 meters) in cultivation. It can grow up to 50 feet (15 meters) tall in its natural habitat.
Climate requirements: It is native to temperate regions of Australia and grows well in USDA hardiness zones 8 to 11. It can tolerate a range of temperatures from -9°C to 38°C. It prefers a sunny location with well-drained soil.
Soil type and pH: It prefers well-drained, sandy or loamy soil that is slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0 to 7.5). It can tolerate poor soil conditions and is moderately drought-tolerant once established.
Watering requirements: It requires moderate watering during its establishment period, but it can tolerate some drought once it has developed a deep root system. Hot, dry weather may need supplemental watering to prevent stress.
Fertilizer requirements: It benefits from regular fertilization during the growing season, particularly with a slow-release fertilizer. However, excessive fertilization can lead to weak growth and increased susceptibility to pests and diseases.
Pruning requirements: It benefits from regular pruning to maintain its shape and encourage bushy growth. Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth appears. Remove any dead, damaged or diseased branches and thin out crowded growth.
Pest and disease control: It is generally resistant to pests and diseases. However, it may be susceptible to eucalyptus long-horned borers and scale insects. Control these pests with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap. Watch for signs of leaf spots or rust diseases and remove any infected leaves.
Propagation can be from seed or cuttings in late summer or early fall. Seeds should be sown in a well-draining seed-starting mix and kept moist until germination. Cuttings should be taken from new growth and rooted in a perlite and peat moss mixture.
Uses: It is widely cultivated as an ornamental tree for its attractive foliage and aroma. It can also be used as a specimen tree, screen or windbreak. The essential oil extracted from its leaves is used in aromatherapy, cleaning products, and cosmetics.
In conclusion, Eucalyptus cinerea is a hardy and versatile tree that can thrive in various growing conditions. Proper care and maintenance can provide years of beauty and enjoyment in the garden or landscape.
