Your Tree Standing Straight Before the Van Leaves

The hardest part of a real Christmas tree is the first half hour: the cut, the stand, and getting it straight. Add setup to your delivery, and we do that part for you. We carry the tree in, take a fresh slice off the trunk, score the base, lock the tree into your stand, take the netting off, and leave with the netting, the offcut and the mess. Every setup last season took under half an hour.

A fresh 2 to 3cm cut off the trunk, made on the spot so the tree goes into water straight away
The tree locked into your own stand and checked for straightness before we go
Netting, off-cut and setup mess taken away with us
One short visit, at the same time your tree is delivered

ONE VISIT, UP TO 30 MINUTES, ON YOUR DELIVERY DAY*
*An add-on for fresh-cut trees delivered to your home. One setup per tree. Not available with collection, and it cannot be added on the day.

A real tree is easy to live with once it is up. Getting it up is the awkward part: a netted tree on the porch, a trunk that needs a fresh slice before it will drink, a stand that has to grip it dead straight, and sap and needles on everything it touches along the way. Our Christmas tree setup service takes that half hour off your hands.

It happens when your tree arrives. We carry the tree in, take 2 to 3cm off the base with a small electric saw, score the base, fit the trunk into your stand and tighten it until the tree stands straight. Then the netting comes off, the branches drop, and we take the netting, the offcut and the mess away with us. The cut is made outside unless you would rather we do it indoors, in which case we work on the floor protection you have put down.

Setup is done by the owner of Sequoia Valley Farms, alone or with one helper, the same people who bring your tree to the door. Every setup last season was finished in under half an hour.

It is a deliberately small service. We do not decorate, hang lights, move furniture, supply a stand or collect the tree after Christmas. What you get is a tree that is cut, secured and standing where you want it, ready for water and decorations.

  • The Fresh Cut, Done for You: A 2 to 3cm slice off the trunk reopens the wood so the tree can drink. We make it on the spot with our own saw.
  • Secured and Straight: The trunk is locked into your stand and checked from across the room before we leave.
  • We Take the Mess: The netting, the offcut and whatever the setup drops leave with us.
  • In and Out: One visit of up to 30 minutes at delivery. No second appointment and no waiting around.

Choose Your Tree

Setup is booked with a fresh-cut tree and home delivery. Pick your tree and size, and the setup goes in the same order.
What does the setup service include?
We carry your tree in, take a fresh 2 to 3cm cut off the base of the trunk, score the base, fit the tree into your stand and tighten it until it stands straight, then remove the netting. We take the netting, the offcut and the setup mess away with us. It is one visit of up to 30 minutes, at the time your tree is delivered.
Do I need my own stand?
Yes. We do not sell or supply stands, so please have yours assembled and sitting where you want the tree. It needs to hold water and to grip the trunk, which most stands sold in Australia now do with screws or a clamp and a wide base. Cinco is a brand many real-tree sellers use. For a tree of 8ft or more, choose a stand rated for that height.
What happens if my stand is not suitable on the day?
We will tell you before we start. If there is nothing we can do and no work is done, we refund the setup fee in full. If you would like us to go ahead with the rest, we make the fresh cut, score the base, carry the tree in and take the netting off, and the fee stands, because that is most of the job. Stand the tree in a bucket of water until your stand is sorted.
Where do you make the cut, and is it messy?
Outside, unless you ask otherwise. The saw is a small electric one with a 6-inch bar, so it is quick, and there are no fumes. If outside is not practical, as in many apartments, we can cut indoors on the floor protection you have laid down. Either way, the sawdust and the off-cut leave with us. A few needles always drop when the netting comes off; we pick up what the setup sheds.
My tree is 8ft or taller. Is that a problem?
No, and the price is the same. A tall tree is too much for one person to hold and secure at once, so we ask that an able adult is on hand to steady the tree while we tighten the stand. We do the lifting and the work at the base; you hold it upright and tell us when it is straight.
I live in an apartment or up a flight of stairs. Can you still do it?
Yes. We have set up trees in apartments and up stairs. At checkout, we ask about stairs, lifts, parking and where the tree is going, so we arrive with a plan. In a lift building, check that your tree's height fits the lift before you choose a size.
Can I add setup on the day, or with a collection order?
No to both. The saw and tools come on the van only when a setup is booked, so it needs to be in your order beforehand. And setup happens in your home at delivery, so it is not available with collection from our Mittagong HQ. If you forgot to add it, contact us at least a day before your delivery, and we will add it if the run allows.
Do you decorate the tree or collect it after Christmas?
No. The service ends with the tree standing in its stand with the netting off. We do not decorate, hang lights, move furniture or collect trees in January. Most councils take real trees with green waste; check your council's dates.
I am having two trees delivered. How do I book?
Add one setup for each tree you want us to set up. Each tree needs its own stand, ready in its spot.

What's Included

The setup service covers the half hour between a netted tree arriving at your door and a tree standing in its stand. It is done at the time of delivery, by the people who deliver your tree.

What we do, in order

  1. Carry the tree in. Still netted, along the path you have cleared, to the spot you have chosen.
  2. Make the fresh cut. We take 2 to 3cm off the base of the trunk with a small electric saw. A cut trunk seals over with resin within hours, and a sealed trunk cannot take up water, so every fresh-cut tree needs this before it goes into a stand. We cut outside unless you ask us to do it indoors.
  3. Score the base. Shallow score marks are cut into the base of the trunk after the fresh cut.
  4. Fit and lock the stand. The trunk goes into your stand, and the screws or clamp are tightened until the tree is held firm and upright. We check it from across the room, and ask you to as well.
  5. Take the netting off. The branches drop over the next few hours as the tree settles.
  6. Clear up. The netting, the offcut, the sawdust and the needles the setup has shed leave with us.

What is not included

  • Decorating the tree or hanging lights
  • Moving furniture to make room
  • Supplying a stand
  • Collecting or disposing of the tree after Christmas

The service at a glance:

  • Time: One visit of up to 30 minutes, at delivery. Every setup last season took less.
  • Trees: Fresh-cut Douglas Fir and Monterey Pine, 5ft to 10ft
  • Booking: One setup per tree, added to the same order as the tree
  • Delivery: Home delivery only; not available with collection
  • Trees 8ft and Over: Same price, with an able adult on hand to steady the tree while it is secured
  • Tools: We bring the saw and everything else we need. You provide the stand.

Before We Arrive

Setup is quick when the room is ready. Five things to have done before the van pulls up:

  • Your Stand, Assembled and in Place: We fit the tree into your own stand, so have it put together and sitting where the tree will go. It needs to hold water and to grip the trunk with screws or a clamp, on a wide base. Cinco is a brand many real-tree sellers use. For a tree of 8ft or more, check that the stand is rated for that height. We do not sell or supply stands.
  • Floor Protection: Put a tree mat, an old sheet or a drop sheet under the stand. A fresh trunk carries a little sap, and needles fall when the netting comes off.
  • A Clear Path: Clear the way from the front door to the stand, wide enough for a netted tree carried flat. Move anything fragile off low tables and shelves along the route.
  • Someone Home: We need you there to show us the spot and to check the tree is straight. For a tree of 8ft or more, an able adult needs to be on hand to steady it while we tighten the stand. We do the lifting.
  • Water Ready: Have a jug or watering can filled. Once the tree is locked in, fill the stand straight away, and keep it topped up every day after that.

Tell us about access when you order
At checkout we ask about stairs, lifts, narrow hallways, where to park, and which room the tree is going in. Stairs and apartments are no trouble with notice. In a lift building, check your tree’s height against the lift before you choose a size.

Where the cut is made
We make the fresh cut outside by default: on the driveway, the porch or the footpath. If you would rather it was done inside, tell us on the day, and we will cut on the floor protection you have put down. The saw is a small electric one, so there are no fumes, and the sawdust leaves with us either way.

Once the tree is up, our Ultimate Christmas Tree Care Guide covers watering, positioning, and decorating.

Booking, Area and Refunds

How to book
Setup is an add-on to a fresh-cut tree. Choose your Douglas Fir or Monterey Pine and its size, choose home delivery, and add one setup for each tree you would like set up. It all goes through in one order, and the setup happens when your tree is delivered. It cannot be bought on its own.

Book ahead, not on the day
The saw and tools travel on the van only when a setup is booked, and each setup adds time to that day’s run. For both reasons, we cannot add a setup at the door. If you would like one after you have ordered, contact us at least a day before your delivery.

Where it is available
Anywhere we deliver fresh-cut trees to the home:

  • Greater Sydney
  • Illawarra and South Coast, to Kiama
  • Southern Highlands and Wollondilly
  • Blue Mountains

Setup is not available with collection from our Mittagong HQ, because it is done in your home.

On the day
You receive a tracking link on delivery day and a text when the van is close. Please be home for a setup delivery; a tree booked for setup cannot be left on the porch. Allow up to 30 minutes from when we arrive.

If you need to cancel
You can cancel the setup for a full refund of the setup fee up to 24 hours before your delivery slot. Your tree order is not affected.

If your stand is not suitable on the day
We fit the tree into your own stand, so the service depends on there being one that holds water and grips the trunk. If there is no stand, or it will not hold your tree safely, we will tell you before we start, and you choose:

  • No work done: we deliver the tree as a standard delivery and refund the setup fee in full.
  • Everything but the stand: we make the fresh cut, score the base, carry the tree in and remove the netting. The setup fee stands, because that is most of the service. Stand the tree in a bucket of water until your stand is ready.

If nobody is home
If we arrive for a booked setup and nobody is home, we leave the tree in a safe, shaded spot as a standard delivery where we can, and the setup fee is not refunded, because the time was held for you on the run.
