The Scent of an Australian Christmas, Delivered to Your Door

For a great many Australian families, Christmas smells like a radiata pine. This is that tree, grown the way it deserves to be: in rows by Spruced, a specialist Christmas tree grower we have worked with since 2022, pruned twice a year so it fills out dense and even, collected in the week you receive yours, and delivered to a booked slot you can track on the day. A rich pine scent that carries through the house, a full, bushy shape, and four to five weeks of colour with a fresh cut and daily watering.

Height: Measured from the cut base of the trunk to the tip of the leader
Growth Habit: Dense, bushy, classic conical form with long, deep green needles

HEIGHTS: 5FT TO 10FT (APPROX. 1.5M TO 3.0M)*
*Heights are measured from the cut base of the trunk to the tip of the leader. Every tree is graded by the grower to its size band; within a band, natural variation of a few centimetres is normal. Add roughly 10cm for a stand.

If you grew up with a real tree in Australia, it was almost certainly this one. A real Monterey Pine Christmas tree, the radiata pine of every roadside lot and school fete from the seventies onward, is the reason a whole generation knows what Christmas smells like. That scent is the point of this tree: a deep, resinous pine fragrance that meets you at the front door and carries through the whole house, strongest in the first fortnight and still there when you brush past the branches in the last week of December. No candle and no artificial tree comes close, and nothing else we sell is as fragrant.

What has changed is how well it can be grown. Our Monterey Pines come from Spruced, a specialist Christmas tree grower we have partnered with since 2022, whose grower came to Christmas trees from a career in forestry and knows radiata from the nursery bench to the field better than any other species. Spruced grows a radiata selected for Christmas trees rather than timber, with more branching and shorter gaps between the tiers, and prunes it twice a year so it buds back along its branches and fills in, so what arrives is a dense, bushy cone rather than the open, leggy tree a radiata becomes when left to itself. We collect them from the farm in the week you receive yours, netted and graded to size, and bring them to your door in our own van.

Three honest notes, because they are part of the tree. The needles are long and firmer than a fir’s, with a point to them, so households with very small children or curious pets often prefer our Douglas Fir. The scent comes from resin, and resin means a little sap on the trunk and cut branches, so handle the base with gloves and keep it off the carpet until it is in the stand. And a pine is not forgiving of a heavy ornament hung on its outer growth: lights and lighter decorations go anywhere, while anything weighty or precious belongs on the sturdier branches in toward the trunk. Dressed that way and never allowed to run dry, it holds its colour for four to five weeks and fades gradually rather than all at once.

  • The Scent of Christmas: The richest pine fragrance of any tree we sell, strong enough to fill the house rather than just the room it stands in.
  • Pruned for a Full Shape: Two prunes a year make the pine bud back and fill in, giving a dense, bushy cone that hides its trunk and leaves no gaps to decorate around.
  • Four to Five Weeks of Colour: Collected the week you receive it. With a fresh cut and daily water it fades slowly and steadily, and is less prone to sudden needle drop than a fir.
  • Dense Enough to Dress Fully: Thick foliage carries lights and lighter ornaments from top to bottom. Its branches are the finest of any tree we sell, so heavier and precious pieces go close to the trunk.

Add Our Setup Service

We make the fresh cut, lock the tree into your stand, take the netting off and take the mess away. One less job on a December weekend, and no sap on your hands.

From Last Christmas

★★★★★
"The smell is just incredible! It took me straight back to my childhood. The tree was so fresh and lasted all the way through to the new year. The drive from Canberra to pick it up was well worth it."
— David M., Canberra, ACT
★★★★★
"We've tried other real trees in Sydney, but nothing compares to the quality and freshness from Sequoia Valley Farms. It was the centrepiece of our Christmas. Will be ordering again every year."
— Jennifer P., Sydney, NSW
★★★★★
"We were absolutely stoked with our Monterey Pine! We drove down from Sydney for the Mittagong collection, and the whole process was seamless. The tree was incredibly fresh, full, and exactly what we were looking for."
— Joey M., Balmain, NSW
How long will a Monterey Pine last indoors in an Australian summer?
Four to five weeks with the basics done properly. Take a 2 to 3cm slice off the base of the trunk when it arrives, stand it in water within the hour, and keep the stand topped up; a fresh tree can drink several litres a day in its first week. Keep it out of direct sun and away from heaters and air-conditioner vents. A well-watered pine fades gradually over the weeks rather than dropping its needles all at once, so it gives you fair warning: if the needles start to feel dry, check the stand first.
Where do you deliver, and when?
We run our own van to four corridors across the three weeks of the season: Greater Sydney, the Illawarra and South Coast as far as Kiama, the Southern Highlands, and the Blue Mountains. Each corridor has its own delivery days, and you book a slot at checkout. Enter your postcode in the checker on this page and it will show you your corridor, your dates and the delivery price. If you are outside the corridors, you are welcome to collect from our Mittagong HQ.
Is the Monterey Pine the same as a radiata pine?
Yes. Monterey Pine and radiata pine are two names for one tree, Pinus radiata. "Monterey" comes from its home on the Californian coast; "radiata" is the name Australian forestry gave it, and the one most of us grew up hearing. It is the traditional real Christmas tree in Australia and New Zealand. What differs from tree to tree is the growing: ours are grown in rows for Christmas and pruned twice a year for a dense, full shape.
Will it hold heavy ornaments?
Hang them with care. The dense outer growth carries lights, tinsel and lighter decorations anywhere on the tree, but a pine is not forgiving if a heavy ornament goes on a thin outer shoot: it will bend and the ornament can slide off. Its branches are finer than a fir's or a spruce's, so put anything weighty or precious on the thicker wood close to the trunk. If your collection is mostly heavy glass, the Douglas Fir is the better tree for it.
Is there much sap, and will it fit my stand?
Some, and yes. The scent comes from resin, so expect a little sap at the cut base and on any trimmed branch. Wear gloves when you handle the trunk, and keep it off carpet and upholstery until it is in the stand; cooking oil or hand sanitiser takes sap off skin. As for stands, most sold in Australia now have a wide base, a water reservoir and screws that tighten onto the trunk, and those take our trees without trouble.
Is it suitable around small children and pets?
For most households, yes, with two things to know. The needles are firmer than a fir's and have a point, so a toddler grabbing a branch or a dog pushing past will feel it; if that is your house this year, our Douglas Fir is the gentler tree. And as with any real tree, needles and sap are not for chewing and the stand is not a water bowl, so cover the stand and keep an eye on a puppy or a cat that likes to nibble.
Do I need to be home for delivery?
Not necessarily. On the day you receive a tracking link and a text when the van is close, and if you have a safe, shaded place to leave the tree, such as a porch or carport, we will leave it there with a photo as proof of delivery. Leave a bucket of water out and the tree will be fine until you get home. If you have added the Setup Service, we need you there so we can set the tree where you want it.
What is the difference between the Monterey Pine and the Douglas Fir?
The Monterey Pine is the Australian tree of memory: the strongest scent, a dense and bushy shape, firmer needles and a little resin. The Douglas Fir is the tree Europe and North America put up: soft, flat needles, a lighter citrus scent, and stronger, layered branches that suit heavier ornaments. Families who want the whole house to smell like Christmas usually choose the pine; families with small children or pets, or who had a fir overseas and miss it, usually choose the fir. Both are grown by Spruced, both keep four to five weeks with daily water, and both are delivered the same way.

Detailed Description and Specs

The Monterey Pine (Pinus radiata), known to most Australians as the radiata pine, has one of the oddest stories in the conifer world. In the wild, it is a rare tree, confined to three small stands on the fog-bound central coast of California, around Año Nuevo, the Monterey Peninsula and Cambria, and to two islands off Mexico. Its cones stay sealed on the branch for years and open in the heat of a fire, and its long needles are carried in bundles of three. Away from home, it became something else entirely: the most widely planted pine on earth. It reached Australia in the 1850s; South Australia began planting it for timber in the 1870s, and within a few generations it was the backbone of plantation forestry here and in New Zealand. A tree that struggles to hold its ground in California covers whole ranges in the southern hemisphere.

That is how it became our Christmas tree. Where Europe and North America had firs and spruces to cut, Australia had radiata, and from the middle of the last century it was the tree on the roadside lot, at the school fete and in the lounge room: fast-growing, deep green and more fragrant than anything else on offer. Grown for Christmas rather than for timber, it is a different tree again. Ours are grown by Spruced, a specialist Christmas tree grower we have partnered with since 2022, whose grower worked in forestry with this species from nursery production to field planting before turning to Christmas trees. Most radiata in Australia is bred for timber, with open crowns and long stretches of bare stem; Spruced grows a line selected for Christmas trees, with more branching and shorter gaps between the tiers. The pines are grown in rows and pruned twice a year; each prune makes the tree bud back along its branches, and over several seasons that builds the dense, bushy cone that a forestry radiata never makes. We collect each week’s allocation from the farm and bring it to the Southern Highlands for delivery and collection in the same week.

It is an honest, generous tree with a few habits worth knowing. The fragrance that fills the house comes from resin, so there is a little sap at the cut base and on trimmed branches. The needles are firmer and more pointed than a fir’s. The outer growth is dense but fine, so it wears lights and lighter decorations beautifully while heavier ornaments belong on the sturdier branches near the trunk. And kept in water, it fades slowly and evenly over four to five weeks, which makes it an easy tree to live with through December.

Here’s why we think you’ll love the Real Monterey Pine Christmas Tree:

  • Species: Pinus radiata (Monterey Pine, radiata pine)
  • Provenance: Native to the central coast of California and two islands off Mexico; grown for us by Spruced, a specialist Christmas tree grower, in rows and pruned twice a year for fullness
  • Scent: Strong, warm and resinous, the classic pine fragrance; the most fragrant tree we sell
  • Foliage: Long, slender, deep green needles in bundles of three, firmer and more pointed than a fir’s; dense, bushy branching in a full conical crown
  • Sizes: 5ft to 10ft (approx. 1.5m to 3.0m), measured from the cut base of the trunk to the tip of the leader; add roughly 10cm for a stand
  • Best For: Families who want the whole house to smell like Christmas, anyone who grew up with a real Australian Christmas tree, and decorators who want a full tree with no gaps

Care and Planting Guide

A fresh-cut Monterey Pine is a steady, forgiving tree in every respect but one: it must never run out of water. Everything below is in service of that.

  • The First Cut: Within an hour of the tree arriving, take a straight slice of 2 to 3cm off the base of the trunk. Pine resin seals a cut trunk within a few hours, and a sealed trunk cannot drink no matter how much water it stands in. A fresh cut reopens the water-conducting wood. Cut straight, not at an angle, so the trunk sits flat in the stand. If you have added our Setup Service, we do this for you on the spot.
  • Mind the Sap: The fragrance comes from resin, so the cut base and any trimmed branch will be a little sticky. Wear gloves when you handle the trunk, lay a drop sheet under the tree while you set it up, and keep the base off carpet and upholstery until it is in the stand. Cooking oil or hand sanitiser takes sap off skin; soap and water alone will not.
  • Into Water Immediately: Stand the tree in a water-holding stand straight after the cut and fill it with plain tap water. No sugar, no aspirin, no additives. A stand with a wide base, screws that tighten onto the trunk and a reservoir of at least 4 litres suits a tree up to 7ft; go larger for the bigger sizes, because the tree will drink a surprising amount in its first days.
  • Water Every Day: A fresh tree can take 3 to 4 litres in its first 24 hours and a litre or more a day after that. Check the stand in the morning and evening for the first week and never let the water level drop below the base of the trunk. If it does, the resin seals the base again, and the tree starts to dry from that moment, even once the water is back.
  • Position: Away from direct sun, heaters, and air-conditioner vents, all of which pull moisture out of the needles faster than the trunk can replace it. A cool corner with indirect light is ideal, and it is also where the scent lingers longest.
  • Decorating: Use LED lights, which run cool; older incandescent strings warm the foliage and dry it. Lights, tinsel and lighter ornaments can go anywhere on the dense outer growth. Heavier glass and anything precious belongs on the sturdier branches in toward the trunk; a pine’s outer shoots will bend under weight and let an ornament slide. Gloves make the job more comfortable, as the needles have a point.
  • Reading the Tree: A pine fades gradually rather than all at once. Needles that feel dry or brittle, or that come away when you draw a branch gently through your hand, mean the tree is thirsty. Check the stand first; nine times out of ten it is empty. A tree that has been kept watered will still be green and fragrant four to five weeks in.
  • After Christmas: The tree goes out with your council green waste in January, or into the chipper if you have one. Remove every hook and strand of tinsel first. It cannot be planted; for a living tree, see our potted range.

Shipping and Delivery

Local delivery and Mittagong collection only
This is a fresh-cut tree and does not travel by courier. We bring it to you in our own van, or you collect it from our Mittagong HQ. Every tree is collected from the grower in the week you receive it; there are three grower runs across the season, and the last one is in the second week of December.

Delivery, to a booked slot
We deliver to four corridors, each on its own days across the three weeks of the season:

  • Greater Sydney
  • Illawarra and South Coast, to Kiama
  • Southern Highlands
  • Blue Mountains

Enter your postcode in the checker at the top of this page to see your corridor, its delivery dates and the price. You choose a delivery date and slot at checkout; bookings close 24 hours before the slot so we can plan the run. On the day, you receive a tracking link to follow the van, a text when we are close, and a photo as proof of delivery. If you have a safe, shaded spot such as a porch or carport, you do not need to be home: leave a bucket of water out, and we will leave the tree there for you. If you have added the Setup Service, we need you there.

Collection from our Mittagong HQ
Our HQ is an off-site collection point in Mittagong, a few minutes from the Hume Highway on and off ramps. It is not a farm, and there is nothing to pick or walk through; your tree is netted and waiting with your name on it. Collection runs on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 pm, the same day the week’s trees arrive from the grower, and in daytime windows on Wednesdays. There is also a Sunday clearance day in mid-December for anything left after the last delivery run. You choose your collection date and window at checkout. Collection suits customers outside our delivery corridors, including Canberra, Goulburn, the South Coast beyond Kiama and Western Sydney, and anyone who would rather make a morning of it.

Getting your tree home from collection
Transporting a fresh-cut tree properly is the first and most important part of keeping it fresh, especially in an Australian summer. Wind and sun dry the needles faster than anything else. Please come with:

  • A drop sheet or tarp to protect your car from stray needles, sap and water.
  • Old towels or blankets. We will happily wet the tree down before you leave; wrapping it in damp towels makes a humid cocoon for the trip and is the single best thing you can do for it.

Best method: inside the vehicle. Most of our trees fit inside a standard car with the back seats down, and a 5ft or 6ft tree fits in a hatchback. This keeps the tree out of the wind and sun entirely. For utes and trailers, cover the tree completely.

A note on roof racks: we strongly advise against them. Even on a short trip, highway wind and sun together can damage the needles badly. If a roof rack is the only option, wrap the tree fully in a tarp, trunk forward, and keep the trip short.

We net every tree and help you load it. Our Ultimate Christmas Tree Care Guide has the full version of this advice.
