Care Tips for Fresh Christmas Trees During the Australian Summer
Keeping your Douglas Fir Christmas Tree fresh and vibrant throughout the Australian summer requires special care. Follow these tips to ensure your fresh-cut Christmas Tree remains in top condition:
Choose a Fresh Tree: We will have a selection of fresh-cut Douglas Fir Christmas Trees for you to choose from. For maximum freshness and longevity, you can organise delivery or collection as close to your desired setup date as possible. Pre-ordering your tree ensures you get the freshest tree for your preferred setup date.
Make a Fresh Cut on the Stump:Â A callus forms to protect them from losing water and sap after harvest. Before setting up your tree, cut about 2-3 centimetres off the trunk’s base. This will create a fresh wound that allows the tree to absorb more water, extending its shelf life and maintaining freshness for longer. Ensure the cut is perpendicular so your tree sits perfectly in its stand.
Prepare a Fresh Drink: Place your tree in a stand that holds water immediately after cutting the trunk. A fresh tree can absorb several litres of water in the first few hours, so keep the stand filled.
Location: Position your tree away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and draughts. The Australian summer can be harsh, so keeping your tree in a cooler part of the room will help maintain its freshness. Set your tree away from areas in your home exposed to hot, dry conditions.
Thirsty Trees Need Water: Check the water level daily. A Douglas Fir can drink up to a litre of water per day. Never let the water level drop below the base of the tree trunk, as this can cause the cut end to seal over, reducing its ability to absorb water. Always use fresh, clean water.
Humidity and Misting: To increase the humidity around your tree, lightly mist the needles with water. This helps to keep the needles hydrated and reduces needle drop. Use a spray bottle filled with fresh, clean water. Douglas Firs come from cool and wet environments; their needles can dry out quickly in hot weather. La Nina summers are more forgiving but remember to check your tree on warmer days.
To Feed or not to Feed: It’s essential to regularly change and top up your tree’s water with fresh, clean water to keep it fresher for longer. Like a cut flower, using a tree preservation solution can help extend the life of your tree. You may want to consider adding a small amount of Green Boost by Manutec or Thrive by Yates to the water to maintain green needles for longer.
