The Ultimate Architectural Coastal Conifer

If you are designing a grand coastal avenue, a rural windbreak, or a commercial boundary but lack the immense horizontal width required for a Bunya or Hoop Pine, the Cook Pine (Araucaria columnaris) is your definitive solution. Endemic to New Caledonia, this towering evergreen forms a tight, narrow, columnar spire that provides dramatic vertical scale without overwhelming the ground space. Backed by our direct, immediate access to Australia’s premier international wholesale growers in the Illawarra region, we can fulfil projects of any scale. From deeply rooted 100mm starters to established 200mm feature plants and massive 100L ex-ground commercial trees, we provide uncompromised quality and uncapped logistical capacity.

Famous for its striking, narrow habit and its unique tendency to lean slightly towards the equator
Available in 100mm, 200mm, and massive advanced ex-ground bags for instant scale
Specialist bulk supply for coastal avenues, golf courses, and commercial development
Highly resilient—effortlessly tolerates coastal winds, salt spray, and poor sandy soils

UNDERSTANDING OUR COMMERCIAL GRADING*
*Heights measured from the base of the pot to the tip of the leader. Advanced bagged stock requires custom heavy freight logistics.

  • 100mm Starter (20–25cm): Vigorous, compact stock perfectly graded for bulk coastal or boundary planting.
  • 200mm Premium (70–80cm): Deeply established structural stock showing heavy lateral branching and vertical vigour. Ideal for immediate residential/acreage impact.
  • Advanced Bags (up to 100L & 4m tall): Sourced on demand for landscape architects requiring instant commercial scale.

The Cook Pine (Araucaria columnaris) is frequently mistaken for the Norfolk Island Pine, but to the trained eye, it is a vastly different architectural tool. While the Norfolk Pine spreads wide, the Cook Pine remains tight, dense, and sharply columnar. It is also famous for a bizarre botanical phenomenon: mature trees almost universally develop a slight, graceful lean pointing directly toward the equator, creating a magnificent, sweeping aesthetic in large avenues.

Because our primary supply comes straight from an elite, internationally exporting wholesale grower on the NSW South Coast, we completely bypass standard retail limits. If you need a single perfectly symmetrical 200mm tree for a coastal garden, or if you need to buy a bulk avenue of Cook Pines in massive 100L bags for a beachfront commercial subdivision, we have the network to dispatch it immediately.

  • The Narrow Spire: Reaches towering heights without spreading wide, making it the perfect architectural conifer for tight boundary lines and formal driveway avenues.
  • Coastal Bulletproof: Highly adapted to coastal environments. It easily shrugs off salt spray, battering ocean winds, and sandy, poor-draining soils.
  • Direct Wholesale Access: By sourcing directly from the Illawarra's premier grower, we can fulfill massive commercial and farm forestry quotes instantly.
  • The Equatorial Lean: A fascinating botanical quirk—mature Cook Pines lean towards the equator (leaning North in Australia), adding incredible character to the landscape.

★★★★★
"We needed fifty trees to line the driveway of a coastal property, but a Bunya or Hoop pine would have grown too wide. The 200mm Cook Pines from SVF were perfectly uniform, standing around 75cm tall, and handled the sea breeze beautifully."
— Richard M. — Landscape Designer, Byron Bay (NSW)
★★★★★
"Sequoia’s commercial supply capacity is unmatched. We ordered massive advanced ex-ground Cook Pines for a golf course boundary. The freight coordination was flawless, and the trees provided instant, towering impact."
— Tonya K. — Commercial Developer, Gold Coast (QLD)
★★★★★
"The 100mm starters were exactly as described—about 25cm tall, deeply rooted, and vigorously pushing new growth. Excellent stock from their Illawarra network."
— Jack W. — Bonsai Enthusiast, Shoalhaven (NSW)
What is the difference between a Cook Pine and a Norfolk Island Pine?
While closely related, they have very different shapes. A Norfolk Island Pine (A. heterophylla) grows quite wide with distinct, evenly spaced horizontal tiers of branches. A Cook Pine (A. columnaris) is much narrower, with shorter, denser branches that create a tight, columnar "spire" shape. Additionally, Cook Pines tend to lean slightly towards the equator as they mature, while Norfolk Pines generally grow very straight.
Can I plant this near the ocean?
Yes. It is one of the most salt-tolerant and wind-resistant large conifers in the world. It thrives in sandy coastal soils and can easily handle direct sea breezes, making it a staple for beachfront parks and coastal avenues.
Can you supply bulk orders for massive commercial avenues?
Absolutely. Because we have direct access to elite wholesale growers that supply domestic & international markets, our capacity is virtually uncapped. We can supply massive runs of 100mm starters or rows of 4-metre-tall advanced ex-ground trees. Contact us for a direct quote.
Can I get this shipped to Tasmania or Western Australia?
Yes, but with strict size limits. All orders to WA, NT, and TAS must pass through our Plant Concierge for biosecurity treatment. Because these states mandate Express Post, we can only ship the 100mm and 200mm sizes (which fall safely under the 105cm maximum length). Advanced bags cannot clear interstate freight limits.

Detailed Description and Specs

The Cook Pine (Araucaria columnaris) is a distinctive, towering evergreen conifer endemic to New Caledonia. First classified by the botanists aboard Captain James Cook’s second voyage (hence the name), it has since become a highly prized ornamental tree in tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate coastal regions worldwide.

Its most defining characteristic is its habit. It grows into a very narrow, tightly packed columnar spire. The bark is grey and peels off in thin, papery horizontal strips. Interestingly, as the tree matures, the trunk almost always develops a noticeable lean towards the equator—a phenomenon that has fascinated botanists for decades and adds immense architectural character to avenue plantings.

Here’s why we think you’d want to buy Cook Pine:

  • Species: Araucaria columnaris (Cook Pine / New Caledonia Pine)
  • Foliage: Overlapping, scale-like dark green leaves tightly packed on short branchlets.
  • Form: Extremely narrow, dense, columnar spire.
  • Quirk: Mature trunks exhibit a slight, natural lean towards the equator.
  • Best For: Tight boundary planting, coastal avenues, golf courses, and tall architectural accents.

Care and Planting Guide

The Cook Pine is a low-maintenance, highly resilient coastal survivor.

  • Sunlight & Location: Requires full sun to maintain its tightest, densest foliage. While much narrower than a Hoop Pine, it is still a massive tree that will eventually reach 30m+; do not plant directly against building foundations.
  • Soil & Drainage: Thrives in sandy, coastal, and well-draining soils. It will adapt to heavier soils provided they are not constantly waterlogged. It has exceptional tolerance for salt spray.
  • Watering: Water deeply during the first 12 months of establishment. Once mature, it is deeply drought-tolerant and requires no supplemental watering in most coastal or temperate climates.
  • Pruning: Never prune the central leader. If you cut the top off, the tree will lose its iconic columnar shape and may sprout multiple, weaker competing leaders.
