Cedrus deodara, commonly known as the Deodar Cedar, the Himalayan Cedar and the Deodar, is a majestic, evergreen conifer native to the western Himalayas. Its graceful, weeping branches, blue-green foliage, and pyramidal shape make it a stunning specimen tree in parks, estates, and larger Australian gardens. The name “Deodar” comes from the Sanskrit devadaru, meaning “timber of the gods”, and it lives up to its name with impressive stature and serene presence.

Height and Spread

The Deodar Cedar is a large tree with a typical mature height of 20 to 30 metres, though it can occasionally exceed this in optimal conditions. In its early years, the tree has a neat, conical form, which broadens as it matures, with long, pendulous branch tips that create a soft, flowing silhouette.

Its canopy can spread 8 to 12 metres or more, especially with age, so it needs space to develop its full potential. When planted in open ground with plenty of room, it becomes a commanding landscape feature.

Foliage and Appearance

The foliage of Cedrus deodara consists of needle-like leaves that are usually a soft, bluish-green, although some selections offer silvery or glaucous tones. Needles are grouped in clusters and spiral around the branches, giving the tree a feathery texture.

It produces upright barrel-shaped cones that sit atop branches and disintegrate slowly to release seeds, although it may take a few years for young trees to begin coning.

Its weeping branch tips add to its elegance, particularly when planted where its natural form can be appreciated from a distance.

Preferred Soil Type

Deodar Cedar grows best in deep, well-drained soils. While it will tolerate a range of soil types, including sandy or loamy soils, it thrives in moderately fertile soil that retains some moisture without becoming waterlogged.

It dislikes heavy clay or poorly drained ground, which can lead to root rot. If planting in heavier soil, consider creating a raised bed or improving drainage with composted organic matter and coarse sand before planting.

Mulching around the base helps maintain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature during hot spells.

Soil pH

Deodar Cedar prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils, ideally with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. It is adaptable and can tolerate mildly alkaline conditions, but highly alkaline soils may inhibit nutrient uptake over time.

If you’re unsure of your soil’s pH, a simple home test kit will help guide any necessary amendments. Adding organic matter or using mulch from pine needles or oak leaves can help maintain a slightly acidic environment.

Position and Light

Deodar Cedar thrives in full sun, where it receives at least six hours of direct light daily. It tolerates light shade, especially when young, but performs best in an open, sunny location with good air circulation.

Choose a planting site with plenty of space, well away from buildings, paving, or power lines. The tree’s eventual size and spread make it most suitable as a feature tree in large gardens, parks, or rural landscapes.

Watering and Maintenance

Young Deodar Cedars benefit from regular deep watering during their first few summers, especially in warmer parts of Australia. Once established, they become moderately drought-tolerant, though they’ll still appreciate occasional watering during prolonged dry periods.

Avoid overhead watering, especially in humid regions, as this can encourage fungal issues. Water at the base early in the day to reduce disease risk and allow foliage to dry before evening.

Deodar Cedar is a low-maintenance tree. It rarely needs pruning except to remove dead or damaged branches. If shaping is desired, prune lightly in late winter while the tree is dormant. Avoid pruning heavily or late in the growing season, as it may spoil the tree’s natural form.

Cedrus deodara is an ideal choice for gardeners seeking a long-lived, stately evergreen with year-round visual interest. Its graceful habit, soft foliage, and tolerance for Australian conditions make it a treasured tree in cooler climates and temperate regions. With minimal care and a suitable position, the Deodar Cedar will reward you with enduring beauty for generations to come.
