The Hinau is related to the Australian Blueberry Ash and produces a similar white flower and fruit. Commonly found from coastal and lowland forest though occasionally extending into the montane forest. Distribution from the North, and South Island, as far South Westland in the west and Christchurch in the east. It prefers humid locations with adequate rainfall throughout the year. It does well in most soil types and prefers well-drained soil.
