Elaeocarpus dentatus or Hinau is an evergreen tree native to New Zealand. It has striking bronze foliage in its juvenile stage, maturing to a green to dark green. Growing up to 20 metres tall with a spread of 5 to 6 metres, this remarkable and striking tree is suitable for providing shade or as a unique ornamental. The Hinau is related to the Australian Blueberry Ash and produces a similar white flower and fruit. Commonly found from coastal and lowland forest though occasionally extending into the montane forest. Distribution from the North, and South Island, as far South Westland in the west and Christchurch in the east. It prefers humid locations with adequate rainfall throughout the year. It does well in most soil types and prefers well-drained soil.
