The Tropical Pine That Defies the Frost

The Mount Spurgeon Black Pine (Prumnopitys ladei) is a botanical masterpiece that breaks all the rules. Highly restricted in the wild to the tropical peaks of the Atherton Tablelands, it is universally labelled as a warm-climate tree. However, through our extensive cultivation trials in Mittagong, NSW, we have proven that this fern-leafed rainforest giant is extraordinarily adaptable—effortlessly surviving deep frosts down to -7°C and even light snowfall. We propagate our own robust 140mm and 200mm stock from elite cuttings, while also tapping into our premium SEQ and Northern NSW network to offer massive, instant-impact 45L to 100L ex-ground specimens for high-end landscape projects.

The ultimate climate chameleon — thrives in both QLD heat and deep NSW/VIC frosts
Ethically propagated from our own robust, cool-climate acclimatised mother stock
Access to highly advanced 45L–100L ex-ground trees for instant architectural impact
Dioecious species — plant multiples to encourage the highly prized future fruiting cycle

If you have ever wanted to achieve a lush, tropical rainforest aesthetic in a cold southern climate, the Mount Spurgeon Black Pine (Prumnopitys ladei) is your answer. While other nurseries merely resell generic tropical tubestock, we have spent years testing the true limits of this ancient Podocarp. By cultivating our own mother stock in the harsh, frosty winters of the Southern Highlands, we have cultivated a line of Black Pines that are rugged, resilient, and proven to survive temperatures as low as -7°C.

Its foliage is mesmerising—soft, dark green, and distinctively fern-like, providing incredible textural contrast in any garden. Whether you are an enthusiast wanting to buy a Mount Spurgeon Black Pine in a 140mm pot to watch it slowly develop, or a landscape architect requiring a row of massive 100L ex-ground specimens to instantly anchor a luxury coastal property, we are the absolute authority on sourcing, growing, and delivering this rare Australian native.

  • Proven Frost Tolerance: Defies its tropical origins. We have successfully grown these in the open through light snow and -7°C frosts without severe damage.
  • Fern-Like Aesthetics: The dark green, flattened leaves look more like a lush prehistoric fern than a traditional needle-bearing pine.
  • Advanced Landscape Supply: We can secure deeply mature, ex-ground trees in 45L to 100L bags from our premium network for instant, high-end landscape results.
  • Expert Propagation: We don't just resell; we actively propagate our own cutting-grown stock from elite mother plants to ensure peak genetic resilience.

★★★★★
"I live in Victoria and always assumed Prumnopitys ladei was strictly tropical. After reading Sequoia's advice, I planted two 200mm specimens. They survived their first frosty winter flawlessly and look incredible."
— Thomas R. — Cool Climate Gardener, Daylesford (VIC)
★★★★★
"We needed three highly advanced trees for a high-end Sydney landscape design. SVF sourced massive 100L specimens from their network and delivered them perfectly. The fern-like foliage is a showstopper."
— Cain M. — Landscaper, Brookevale (NSW)
★★★★★
"The quality of the 140mm cutting-grown stock is exceptional. Standing at just over 50cm tall, it was deeply rooted and actively pushing new growth. A brilliant nursery for rare natives."
— Hugh S. — Native Plant Collector, Capalaba (QLD)
Will this actually survive frost and cold winters?
Absolutely. While endemic to the tropics, it grows at high altitudes on Mount Spurgeon, giving it an innate genetic hardiness. We have successfully cultivated them in Mittagong (NSW), fully exposed to light snow and -7°C frosts, with zero detrimental effects to established plants.
How can I order the massive 45L or 100L ex-ground trees?
Advanced specimens are sourced directly from our premium Northern NSW/SEQ network on a per-project basis. Because these trees are exceptionally heavy and require specialist landscape freight, they cannot be shipped via standard courier. Please contact us directly for a custom supply and freight quote.
Will my tree produce the famous blue-black fruit?
Prumnopitys ladei is a "dioecious" species, meaning individual trees are either male or female. You must have at least one of each for pollination to occur and for the female to produce the fleshy, blue-black plum-like seeds. We highly recommend planting multiples to increase your chances of securing a breeding pair!
How fast does it grow?
It is a notoriously slow-growing conifer, especially in its first few years as it establishes its root system. This slow growth is exactly why large, advanced specimens are so highly valued by commercial landscapers.

Detailed Description and Specs

The Mount Spurgeon Black Pine (Prumnopitys ladei) is an incredibly rare, evergreen conifer belonging to the ancient Podocarpaceae family. In the wild, its entire global population is restricted to a tiny, high-altitude pocket of rainforest on the Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland.

Despite the word “pine” in its name, it looks nothing like a traditional conifer. Its dark green, flattened leaves are arranged in two distinct rows along the stem, giving the branches the lush, drooping appearance of a giant prehistoric fern. If male and female trees are present, the mature female tree will produce highly ornamental, fleshy blue-black fruit containing a single seed.

Here’s why we think you’ll love to buy a Mount Spurgeon Black Pine.

  • Species: Prumnopitys ladei (Mt Spurgeon Black Pine)
  • Foliage: Deep green, flattened, and highly fern-like.
  • Fruit: Fleshy, glaucous blue-black, plum-like seeds (requires male & female trees).
  • Bark: Smooth and dark brown, becoming slightly scaly with age.
  • Resilience: Highly adaptable. Thrives in tropical heat, yet proven to tolerate deep Southern frosts down to -7°C.

Care and Planting Guide

The secret to unlocking the Mount Spurgeon Black Pine’s versatility is patience during its establishment phase.

  • Sunlight & Location: Highly adaptable. It thrives in full sun (which encourages a denser, tighter canopy) but also performs beautifully in dappled or partial shade (which results in a more open, spreading, fern-like habit).
  • Soil & Drainage: Prefers deep, rich, slightly acidic loams with high organic content. While it enjoys consistent moisture, excellent drainage is critical to prevent root rot.
  • Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the first two to three years of establishment. Once deeply rooted, it exhibits surprising drought tolerance, though it appreciates supplemental watering during extended dry, hot spells.
  • Frost Management: While mature trees easily handle -7°C, we advise protecting very young 140mm tubestock from heavy, direct frost for their first winter in the ground while their roots establish.
