What is the difference between the 140mm and 200mm specimens?
Our 140mm specimens are tall (60-75cm) but feature a more juvenile, upright structure. Our 200mm specimens (70-80cm) have been deliberately potted up and "grown on" to thicken the trunk, forcing lateral, lace-like branching and interesting movement. They are the ultimate choice for bonsai artists wanting a developmental head start.
Will the Myrtle Beech survive in a hot coastal climate?
No. The Nothofagus cunninghamii is strictly a cool-climate aristocrat. It requires four distinct seasons and will perish in the prolonged heat and humidity of places like Sydney or Brisbane unless grown in a highly controlled, deeply sheltered microclimate.
Why is my Myrtle Beech turning red/bronze?
That is its most prized feature! Unlike many evergreens, the Myrtle Beech pushes its new spring and summer growth in brilliant, fiery shades of bronze, pink, and red before the tiny triangular leaves harden off to a glossy deep green.

Detailed Description and Specs

The Myrtle Beech (Nothofagus cunninghamii) is a true Gondwanan relic and the keystone species of Australia’s cool-temperate rainforests. With its elegant, layered form and tiny, glossy, triangular leaves, it brings an ancient, architectural grace to any premium landscape.

Our specimens are sourced from the prestigious Silver Banksia Nursery in Tasmania, complemented by a highly exclusive reserve grown from seed at our Southern Highlands estate. Our 140mm starters offer excellent height, while our advanced 200mm specimens have been cultivated specifically to thicken the trunk and develop the intricate, lace-like lateral branching that bonsai artists demand.

Here’s why we think you’ll love the Myrtle Beech:

  • Species: Nothofagus cunninghamii (Myrtle Beech)
  • Provenance: Elite Tasmanian network & exclusive Southern Highlands seed-grown stock.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate, responding exceptionally well to pruning and structural styling.
  • Foliage: Tiny, glossy evergreen leaves that flush brilliant bronze, pink, and red in spring.
  • Best For: Premium bonsai design, sheltered woodland gardens, and rare plant collections.

Care and Planting Guide

The Myrtle Beech is an exceptionally resilient tree, provided its core requirements are strictly met.

  • Sunlight & Location: Thrives in dappled morning light or partial shade. It must be protected from harsh, scorching afternoon sun and hot, dry summer winds, which will rapidly burn the delicate foliage.
  • Soil & Drainage: Fast, efficient drainage is absolutely non-negotiable to prevent root rot. Ensure your bonsai mix or landscape soil is highly aerated and slightly acidic.
  • Watering: As a rainforest species, it demands consistent moisture. Water deeply, but ensure the soil never becomes boggy or waterlogged. Never allow the root ball to dry out completely.
  • Pruning & Maintenance: Highly responsive to structural pruning. Regular pinching of the new growth will maintain a tight, compact shape, reduce leaf size further, and encourage stunningly dense foliage pads for bonsai.
