Detailed Description and Specs

The Nordmann Fir (Abies nordmanniana) reigns supreme as the Christmas tree of choice throughout Europe, famed for its exceptional beauty and longevity indoors. Native to the mountains south and east of the Black Sea, it is a remarkably resilient species, a trait that makes it an excellent candidate for gardens in southeastern Australia.

Its foliage is its standout feature: glossy, deep green needles that are soft to the touch and arranged in dense, orderly layers. This gives the tree an almost perfectly symmetrical, tiered structure that is a decorator’s dream. When its new growth hardens off, it becomes a true show-stopper. While it doesn’t have a strong perfume, it offers a clean, fresh, forest scent that won’t overpower a room.

A VERY IMPORTANT NOTE ON PLANTING: The Nordmann Fir is a majestic, long-lived tree. If you plant it in the ground in ideal conditions, be mindful that it can reach heights of up to 60 metres in its native range. Please choose a location with ample space, well away from buildings and power lines.

Here’s why we think you’ll now the Nordmann Fir Potted Christmas Tree:

  • USP: Our #2 Bestselling Potted Tree; The European Favourite

Care and Planting Guide

The Nordmann Fir is prized for its hardiness, but proper care will ensure it looks its best throughout the festive season and beyond.

Indoors at Christmas: This tree has excellent needle retention, but only if it stays hydrated. Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy. Place it in a bright location but away from direct heat sources like heaters or west-facing windows, which can stress the tree.

Heat Tolerance: The Nordmann Fir is more tolerant of moderate heat than many other firs and spruces, making it a smart choice for warmer rooms or climates. However, it will always perform best if kept as cool as possible.

Planting After Christmas: When planting in your garden, remember its significant potential height. Choose a sunny, open location with well-draining soil. While it tolerates a range of conditions, it will thrive in areas with distinct seasons and good rainfall. As with all living trees, regular watering during its first few summers is key to a healthy start.

Shipping and Delivery

Shipping to Biosecurity States (WA, TAS, NT) Shipping our living trees to these states is a complex process that requires adherence to strict quarantine laws. We have two pathways to achieve this, depending on stock availability from our network of certified growers.

  • If we can source your tree from a certified partner nursery, the process is streamlined, though state government inspection fees may still apply.
  • If we need to ship from our own stock, the tree will require a special third-party treatment and certification process, which incurs significant additional costs.

Therefore, we ask all customers in WA, TAS, and NT to please contact us before placing your order.

This allows us to confirm the best and most cost-effective shipping pathway available for you, provide an accurate quote for any additional costs, and ensure a smooth and compliant delivery of your beautiful tree.
