It is found in southeastern Australia’s cool, temperate regions in scattered populations on the Central and Southern Tablelands and southwestern fringes of the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, between Bathurst and Bombala.

It grows in grassy woodland on hillsides and mountains and has smooth bark, egg-shaped, heart-shaped or round, sessile leaves arranged in opposite pairs, flower buds in groups of three, white flowers and cup-shaped cylindrical fruit. It is highly valued for its attractive, silver-grey foliage, which is densely packed and gives the tree a striking appearance.
