If you are looking to buy a ‘Sea Urchin’ Pine in Australia, you are securing the ultimate space-saving conifer. While standard pines require massive pots or open land, this true micro-dwarf has been genetically selected to remain incredibly small and compact. Because it grows at an exceptionally slow rate, securing an advanced specimen in a 200mm pot gives you a massive developmental head start, making it an absolute treasure for miniature bonsai enthusiasts or detailed rockery designers.
- True Micro-Dwarf: Genetically programmed to grow into a tight, low bun, making it perfect for miniature styling or highly confined landscape spaces.
- Soft 5-Needle Foliage: Features the elegant, soft, blue-green needles of the Eastern White Pine family, offering a beautiful visual texture.
- Minimal Pruning Required: Naturally maintains its neat, rounded globose shape without the need for constant, heavy structural pruning.
- Elite Shohin Material: Provides the perfect naturally proportioned foliage and tight internodes required for competitive Shohin (miniature) bonsai.

Detailed Description and Specs
The Pinus strobus (Eastern White Pine) family is celebrated for its soft, wispy, 5-needle foliage. The ‘Sea Urchin’ cultivar takes those elegant blue-green needles and compresses them into a tight, globose (round) bun that looks exactly like its namesake.
The Shohin Bonsai Dream:
In the bonsai world, “Shohin” refers to trees that are typically under 20–25cm tall. Creating a realistic pine bonsai at this tiny scale is notoriously difficult because standard pine needles are simply too long and look out of proportion. The ‘Sea Urchin’ solves this problem instantly. Its naturally miniature needles, combined with incredibly tight internodal growth, allow artists to build a highly refined, ancient-looking pine tree that can easily be held in the palm of your hand.
A Note on Micro-Dwarf Sizing: Please note that because the ‘Sea Urchin’ invests all of its energy into tight, dense, outward growth rather than vertical height, a 15–20cm plant is considered a highly advanced, mature starter that has taken years to cultivate at the nursery level.
Care and Planting Guide
Despite its tiny size, the ‘Sea Urchin’ is incredibly robust, provided it receives standard 5-needle pine care.
- Sunlight & Location: Thrives in full sun, which helps keep the needles short and the bun tight. In extremely hot Australian climates, protecting it from the harsh late-afternoon summer sun will prevent needle burn.
- Soil & Drainage: Fast, efficient drainage is non-negotiable. Ensure your bonsai mix or rockery soil is highly aerated by adding plenty of coarse aggregate (like pumice or scoria) to prevent roots from sitting in wet soil.
- Watering: Water deeply until it runs out of the drainage holes, but allow the top layer of soil to dry out completely before watering again.
- Pruning: To maintain its density, simply pinch back the new green growth (candles) in early spring.
