The Two-Tone Mediterranean Specimen

The Turkish Fir (Abies bornmuelleriana) is a remarkably robust and adaptable conifer native to the mountainous Black Sea region of northern Turkey. Closely allied to the famous Nordmann Fir, it distinguishes itself with incredibly dense, glossy dark-green needles that sweep upward to reveal bright, silvery undersides—creating a stunning two-tone shimmer across a full, conical frame. It is famously soft to the touch and carries a glorious, fresh fragrance. Due to extreme network scarcity, this page serves as a collector’s bookmark. We are actively working with our premium NSW growers to cultivate the next generation of 140mm starters, estimated for release in 12 to 18 months.

Features soft, non-prickly foliage with a brilliant dark-green and silver two-tone contrast.
A Mediterranean fir that tolerates a wider range of climates and conditions than many traditional alpine species.
Develops into a dense, narrow, cleanly conical landscape specimen that commands attention.
A true Abies (not a Pinus)—meaning future WA/NT orders will clear smoothly via our Plant Concierge.

The Turkish Fir (Abies bornmuelleriana) is one of the most magnificent, yet underutilised, conifers in Australian horticulture. A close cousin to the widely planted Nordmann Fir, this Mediterranean species offers a distinct aesthetic advantage: its glossy, dark-green needles sweep elegantly upwards along the stem, exposing brilliant silvery undersides. The result is a tree that literally shimmers in two tones as the sunlight catches its canopy.

I recently had the privilege of viewing a 15- to 20-year-old specimen up close. The density of the foliage, the flawless conical architecture, and the glorious, fresh scent it projects make it a truly arresting landscape feature. It is a tree I am kicking myself for not holding back in my own private collection when we last had stock!

Unfortunately, Abies bornmuelleriana is currently facing a “network zero” event—it is completely out of stock across the entire Australian commercial network. However, we are actively partnering with our premium NSW suppliers who currently have the next generation in cultivation. Because it takes 4 to 6 years to grow a viable 140mm starter, we are still 12 to 18 months away from release. We highly recommend joining the waitlist to secure this exceptionally robust and adaptable fir when it finally returns.

  • The Two-Tone Shimmer: The upswept nature of the soft, non-prickly needles reveals a bright silver underside, creating a dynamic, shimmering effect across the entire tree.
  • Mediterranean Robustness: Native to northern Turkey, it possesses a natural adaptability to a wider array of soils and climatic conditions than many sensitive alpine firs.
  • Glorious Scent: Emits a remarkably pleasant, fresh coniferous fragrance that elevates it from a visual feature to a full sensory landscape experience.
  • Worth the Wait: A highly sought-after, long-term cultivation project. Securing a spot on the waitlist ensures you don't miss out on the next historic release.

Why is it out of stock for so long?
Abies species are notoriously slow to propagate and establish. It takes a specialist grower between 4 and 6 years just to cultivate a seedling into a viable 40-50 cm-tall starter in a 140mm pot. We are currently waiting for the next crop to reach this crucial maturity milestone.
How is it different from the Nordmann Fir?
They are very closely related (some botanists classify the Turkish Fir as a subspecies or a natural hybrid of the Greek Fir). Visually, the Turkish Fir tends to have a more pronounced upsweep to its needles, which more dramatically exposes the bright silver stomatal bands on the undersides, creating a stronger two-tone effect.
Can you ship this to TAS, WA, or NT when it is released?
Yes. Because our singular premium supplier is based in NSW (which is not directly TAS-certified), all orders to Tasmania, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory will be routed seamlessly through our Plant Concierge for standard biosecurity processing. It is fully exempt from Pinus bans.
Does it need to be pruned to keep its shape?
Not at all. The Turkish Fir naturally grows into a very tight, densely packed, narrow conical pyramid. It requires no structural pruning.

Detailed Description and Specs

The Turkish Fir (Abies bornmuelleriana) is a commanding presence in any cool-to-temperate landscape. Endemic to the Black Sea regions of northern Turkey, it brings a touch of Mediterranean toughness to the Abies genus, offering greater adaptability to varying conditions than many of its more delicate cousins. It forms a dense, narrow, and perfectly conical frame.

While currently out of stock across the industry, this page serves as the definitive bookmark for serious collectors. We are working closely with our premium NSW growing network to bring the next generation of 140mm starters (expected to be 40- 50 cm tall) to market in the next 12 to 18 months. For those seeking a fragrant, architectural, two-tone conifer, it is well worth the wait.

Here’s why we think you’ll love the Turkish Fir:

  • Species: Abies bornmuelleriana (Turkish Fir)
  • Provenance: Premium NSW Network (Currently in cultivation)
  • Growth Habit: Narrow, full, and strictly conical
  • Foliage: Glossy dark-green, soft needles that sweep up to reveal bright silver undersides
  • Best For: Specimen planting, sensory gardens, and rare conifer collections

Care and Planting Guide

Once you secure your Turkish Fir, proper early care will ensure it develops into a flawless specimen.

  • Sunlight: Performs best in full sun, which encourages the tightest, densest needle growth and highlights the shimmering silver undersides. It will tolerate light afternoon shade.
  • Soil & Adaptability: Highly robust. While it prefers moist, well-draining, slightly acidic soil, its Mediterranean origins give it a broader tolerance to different soil profiles compared to standard alpine firs.
  • Watering: Like all newly planted conifers, it requires deep, consistent watering through its first few summers to establish a resilient root system.
  • Placement: Give it room to be admired. As a symmetrical specimen tree, it looks best when not crowded by competing canopy trees.
