The Resilient Silver-Blue Fir
The White Fir (Abies concolor) is a western North American masterpiece, admired above all for its exceptional foliage. It produces long, soft, silver-blue needles that curve upward and outward along the stem, giving the entire tree a frosted, almost spruce-blue cast that is highly unusual within the Abies genus. Crushing these soft needles releases a remarkably fresh citrus-lemon fragrance. Beyond its sensory appeal, it is famously one of the most garden-adaptable of all firs, displaying impressive tolerance to heat, drought, and varying soils. We supply established 200mm starters, alongside advanced 20L and 75L specimens sourced via our premium Victorian network for Eastern States designers requiring immediate scale.

Firs are traditionally seen as highly demanding, strict cool-climate conifers that resent hot summers and dry spells. The White Fir (Abies concolor) completely shatters that expectation. Native to the mountainous regions of western North America, it has evolved a rugged adaptability that allows it to tolerate heat, drought, and a wide range of soil types far better than almost any other member of its genus. It brings the majestic, symmetrical presence of an alpine fir into cool-temperate gardens that would otherwise be too challenging.
Its resilience is matched only by its breathtaking aesthetic. The foliage of the White Fir is an intense, frosted silver-blue. The needles are unusually long for a fir (up to 6cm) and remarkably soft to the touch, curving gracefully upwards along the stem. Brushing past the foliage or crushing a needle releases a crisp, unexpected scent of citrus and lemon. Because they are so handsome in youth, our 200mm starters are consistently snapped up by attendees at our in-person horticultural events.
For landscape designers and collectors, we maintain a steady supply of these 50- 60 cm tall 200mm starters. For larger projects on the Eastern States mainland, we leverage our broader Victorian network to source advanced 20L and 75L specimens, providing immediate structural impact and a permanent, stately blue focal point.
- The Frosted Aesthetic: Provides a striking, cool-toned presence in the garden. The long, up-curved needles deliver a reliable, year-round silver-blue cast.
- Exceptional Adaptability: Offers the classic symmetry of a fir but is uniquely equipped to handle periods of heat, drought, and less-than-ideal soils once established.
- Sensory Appeal: A highly tactile and aromatic tree. The needles are soft to the touch and release a distinctive, fresh citrus-lemon fragrance when rubbed.
- Symmetrical Perfection: Naturally forms a stately, highly structural conical pyramid, making it a flawless standalone specimen for sweeping lawns and formal beds.

Detailed Description and Specs
The White Fir (Abies concolor) breaks the mould of the delicate alpine conifer. Hailing from the rugged mountains of western North America, it brings the formal, stately, and symmetrical conical habit of a classic fir into gardens that demand a tougher, more adaptable specimen. It stands out instantly in the landscape thanks to its soft, frosted, silver-blue foliage—a colour usually reserved for high-altitude spruces.
Because it is so handsome in its youth, our 200mm stock is highly sought after by collectors at in-person events. We keep these 50- 60 cm starters actively stocked and routinely resupplied from our trusted, TAS-certified Victorian network. For designers working on larger mainland Eastern States projects, we leverage our broader network to supply impressive 20L and 75L advanced trees, delivering immediate architectural impact.
Here’s why we think you’ll love the White Fir:
- Species: Abies concolor (White Fir / Colorado Fir)
- Provenance: Premium Victorian Growing Network
- Growth Habit: Stately, symmetrical, and cleanly conical
- Foliage: Long, soft, up-curved silver-blue needles with a citrus-lemon scent
- Best For: Year-round blue landscape specimens, sensory gardens, and drought-tolerant conifer designs
Care and Planting Guide
The White Fir is prized for its forgiving nature, making it an excellent entry point for gardeners wanting to cultivate Abies.
- Sunlight: Thrives in full sun, which promotes the densest, most symmetrical growth and the brightest silver-blue needle colour. It will tolerate light partial shade, but the canopy may become slightly more open.
- Soil & Adaptability: Highly adaptable. It tolerates sandy, loamy, and even heavier clay soils, provided there is adequate drainage. It performs beautifully in slightly acidic to neutral pH levels.
- Watering: Like all newly planted trees, it requires consistent, deep watering during its first two to three years to establish a strong root network. Once anchored, its drought and heat tolerance is outstanding for a fir.
- Pruning: Requires virtually no pruning. It naturally maintains a highly structural, clean conical shape.
Shipping and Delivery
Eastern States (NSW, ACT, VIC, QLD, SA)
Eligible for standard shipping via our secure specialist plant freight network. All sizes—from our 200mm starters to the advanced 20L and 75L network specimens—are dispatched seamlessly across the Eastern States.
Tasmania (TAS)
Because our 200mm stock is sourced from a TAS-certified Victorian grower, eligible 200mm orders can travel the direct certified pathway into Tasmania. However, Bass Strait freight carries a baseline cost. To ensure the shipping cost per plant is economically viable, this direct route requires a minimum volume—typically a mixed order of 6 to 8 x 200mm pots. Orders below this volume are handled through our Plant Concierge. Note: Advanced 20L and 75L stock is not eligible for TAS delivery.
Western Australia & Northern Territory (WA & NT)
Shipping to WA and NT is safely handled through our Plant Concierge. Because the White Fir is an Abies (not a Pinus), it is completely exempt from the strict state pine bans. Our 200mm starters comfortably clear the 1.05-metre height restriction for fast, secure Express Post transit. Note: Advanced 20L and 75L stock is not eligible for WA/NT delivery.
