The Real Balsam Fir Experience
In a market flooded with artificial imitations, the true, living Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea) is an absolute rarity in Australia. Globally celebrated as the traditional, premier Christmas tree, it possesses a rich, spicy, evergreen fragrance that simply cannot be manufactured. We began our journey with this incredibly rare species back in 2018, successfully growing them from imported US seed right here in the cool climate of the Southern Highlands. To ensure this elusive fir remains available to dedicated Australian collectors, we supplement our boutique seed-grown batches with elite tubestock from our premium partners at Spruced. Offering established 200mm specimens, we provide the rare opportunity to plant a genuine, living piece of holiday heritage in your cool-climate landscape.

SECURING A RARE ALPINE SPECIMEN*
*Supply of living Abies balsamea in Australia is exceptionally tight. Our 200mm (45–55cm) specimens represent years of cultivation and acclimatisation.
If you search for a “Balsam Fir,” you will undoubtedly be bombarded by advertisements for premium artificial trees. But for the true horticulturalist, nothing compares to the real Abies balsamea. Native to the boreal forests of North America, it is arguably the world’s most famous aromatic conifer. When we first sowed imported seed in Mittagong in 2018, we discovered that despite its northern origins, this species is incredibly forgiving and thrives beautifully in Australia’s cool-temperate zones, like the Southern Highlands, Blue Mountains, and Victoria.
Because mainland supply is practically non-existent outside of our specialised network, we have engineered a dedicated supply chain—combining our own boutique seed propagation with advanced stock from Spruced—to ensure collectors have access to this masterpiece. If you want to buy a living Balsam Fir tree to keep in a decorative pot for the holidays before planting it out as a majestic landscape feature, this is your rare opportunity.
- The Definitive Scent: The needles are highly aromatic. When brushed or crushed, they release a sweet, spicy, resinous fragrance that defines the alpine forest experience.
- Perfect Pyramidal Form: Description: It naturally develops a flawless, dense, and narrow conical shape, requiring virtually no pruning to maintain its classic structure.
- Exceptional Rarity: Living Balsam Firs are incredibly difficult to source in Australia. This is a true collector's conifer.
- Surprisingly Forgiving: While it demands a cool climate, our trials in the Southern Highlands prove it establishes robustly and handles Australian frosts with ease.

Detailed Description and Specs
The Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea) is a North American evergreen native to the cold, boreal forests of Canada and the northeastern United States. It is globally recognised as the quintessential traditional Christmas tree due to its dark green colour, perfect conical shape, and ability to retain its needles long after being cut.
In the landscape, it is a magnificent architectural specimen. The flat, needle-like leaves are dark green above with two striking silvery-white stomatal bands below. The tree’s smooth, greyish bark is famously covered in resin blisters that contain a highly aromatic, sticky sap known as Canada balsam. When mature, it produces beautiful, upright barrel-shaped cones that shift from deep purple to brown.
Here’s why we think you’ll love to buy a living Balsam Fir tree:
- Species: Abies balsamea (Balsam Fir)
- Foliage: Flat, dark green needles with silvery undersides. Highly aromatic.
- Form: Strict, dense, narrow-pyramidal canopy.
- Cones: Upright, resinous, dark purple cones (on mature trees).
- Best For: Living Christmas trees, alpine garden features, and aromatic cool-climate landscapes.
Care and Planting Guide
Despite its rarity, our trials in the Southern Highlands have shown the Balsam Fir to be quite forgiving, provided its basic cool-climate needs are met.
- Sunlight & Location: Performs best in full sun to partial shade. In the Australian climate, providing protection from harsh, late-afternoon summer sun will keep the foliage vibrant and prevent scorching.
- Soil & Drainage: Prefers rich, slightly acidic, well-draining loams. It naturally grows in moist boreal environments, so incorporating plenty of organic matter into the soil is highly recommended.
- Watering: It is not drought-tolerant. The root zone must be kept consistently cool and moist, especially during the hot Australian summer. Apply a thick layer of mulch (75mm) to protect the shallow root system from heat.
- Pruning: Requires virtually no pruning. It naturally maintains a perfect, tight pyramidal shape.
Shipping and Delivery
Eastern States (NSW, ACT, VIC, QLD, SA)
Our 200mm Balsam Fir stock is eligible for standard shipping via our secure specialist plant freight network. Dispatched directly from our NSW hubs.
Tasmania (TAS) – Plant Concierge Required
Because our primary supply network for this species is based in NSW (SVF and Spruced), your order must pass through our Plant Concierge for mandatory Bass Strait biosecurity treatments prior to dispatch. While we have utilised TAS-certified Victorian growers in the past, current mainland supply dictates that the Concierge pathway be used. Please allow extra time for processing.
Western Australia & Northern Territory (WA & NT)
Shipping to WA and NT is subject to strict interstate biosecurity inspections and mandatory quarantine treatments via our Plant Concierge. At 45–55cm tall, our 200mm specimens easily clear the 105cm maximum length limit imposed by Express Post for these states.
