Soar to the Canopy: The World's Tallest Tree

The Coastal Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) is where the story of Sequoia Valley Farms began. My fascination with the world’s tallest tree started in childhood and led me to propagate these magnificent giants from seed. Today, we offer you a rare opportunity to plant the legendary giant of the Northern California coast. When you buy a Coastal Redwood in Australia, you are investing in soaring height, elegant weeping beauty, and an incredibly fast-growing tree. Unlike the massive bulk of the Giant Redwood, the Sequoia sempervirens offers a more slender, graceful form with soft, feathery, deep-green foliage. Exceptionally vigorous and highly adaptable to the coastal humidity and rainfall of the eastern seaboard, it is the ultimate choice for rapid privacy screening, premium bonsai cultivation, or long-term environmental investment through carbon farming projects.

Incredible vigour — an exceptionally fast-growing tree perfect for rapid, towering privacy screens or majestic features

COASTAL VS. GIANT REDWOODS*
*The Coastal Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) is the tallest tree in the world, featuring soft, flat, yew-like needles and thriving in coastal humidity. The Giant Redwood (Sequoiadendron giganteum) is the most massive tree by volume, featuring scaly, blue-green needles, and is highly adapted to colder, drier inland climates.

The Coastal Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) is the legendary giant of the Northern California coast, renowned for holding the title of the world’s tallest tree. It is a graceful, elegant conifer with soft, feathery, deep-green foliage and rich, reddish-brown bark. While its footprint is narrower than the Giant Redwood’s, this is still an immensely tall, vigorous tree with a powerful root system.

Because of its immense vigour, it can easily exceed 1 to 2 metres of vertical growth per year in ideal, moist conditions, making it a highly effective and majestic rapid privacy screen. It requires significant space and should be planted well away from foundations, pipes, and overhead power lines. If you want to buy a Coastal Redwood, SVF offers premium, fast-growing stock ready to soar in your landscape.

  • Unrivalled Height: Watch in awe as your tree stretches for the canopy. It is genetically designed to be the tallest living organism on Earth.
  • Ultra-Fast Growth: When provided with deep, regular water, young trees can rocket upward, pushing 1-2m of vertical growth in a single season.
  • Soft, Elegant Foliage: Features beautiful, flat, feathery yew-like needles that provide a soft, graceful weeping habit to the lower branches.
  • Carbon Farming Asset: Due to its extreme lifespan and rapid biomass accumulation, it is one of the premier species for long-term carbon sequestration.

★★★★★
"The growth rate on these trees is astonishing. We planted a row of SVF's 200mm Coastal Redwoods as a boundary screen, and with deep watering, they grew over a metre in their first year."
— David R. — Acreage Owner, Gippsland (VIC)
★★★★★
"I specifically wanted Sequoia sempervirens for a large-scale bonsai project. Controlling the extreme vigour is a challenge, but the 140mm stock was incredibly healthy and responded brilliantly to trunk chopping."
— Michael B. — Bonsai Artist, Elizabeth Bay (NSW)
★★★★★
"SVF’s passion for redwoods is obvious. The trees arrived perfectly packaged, standing almost 80cm tall, with soft, flawless, feathery foliage. An exceptional addition to our property."
— Susie L. — Acreage Owner, Southern Highlands, NSW
Is this tree suitable for a suburban backyard?
No. While its footprint is narrower than the Giant Redwood's, this is still an immensely tall tree with a powerful root system. It requires significant space and must be planted well away from foundations, pipes, and overhead power lines.
How fast does the Coastal Redwood grow?
Incredibly fast! In ideal conditions with deep, fertile soil and regular, heavy watering, a young Coastal Redwood can easily push 1 to 2 metres of vertical growth in a single year.
Can it be used for bonsai?
Yes, but it is a species for the dedicated artist! Managing its extreme vigour is the primary challenge. It requires frequent pruning to manage branch length and aggressive techniques to force a convincing trunk taper. The results, however, are spectacular.
What is the difference between this and the Giant Redwood?
The Coastal Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) is the tallest tree, featuring flat, feathery green needles, and prefers coastal fogs and humidity. The Giant Redwood (Sequoiadendron giganteum) is the most massive by volume, has scaly blue-green foliage, and prefers colder inland climates.

Detailed Description and Specs

The Coastal Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) is the legendary giant of the Northern California coast, renowned for holding the title of the world’s tallest tree. It is a graceful, elegant conifer with soft, feathery, deep-green foliage and rich, reddish-brown bark.

Unlike its cousin, the Giant Redwood, which is famed for its immense bulk, the Coastal Redwood is all about soaring height and a slender, elegant form. It is highly adaptable to the coastal humidity and rainfall of the Australian eastern seaboard, making it a spectacular feature tree or a towering, rapid-growth privacy screen for large properties.

  • Species: Sequoia sempervirens (Coastal Redwood)
  • Provenance: Premium NSW & VIC cool-climate networks.
  • Growth Rate: Very Fast (can easily exceed 1-2m of vertical growth per year).
  • Foliage: Soft, flat, feathery deep-green needles with a graceful weeping habit.
  • Best For: Large gardens, acreage, rapid privacy screening, bonsai, and carbon farming.

Care and Planting Guide

The Coastal Redwood is a vigorous and highly rewarding tree that thrives in moist conditions and will grow incredibly fast with proper care.

  • Sunlight & Location: THIS TREE NEEDS SPACE. It thrives in full sun to part-shade. Because it is native to foggy, damp coastal environments, it appreciates protection from harsh, dry inland winds when young.
  • Soil & Drainage: Prefers deep, fertile, and well-draining soil that retains moisture. A thick layer of organic mulch is highly recommended to keep the root zone cool and insulated.
  • Watering: This tree loves water. Regular, deep watering is absolutely crucial to its success and rapid growth, especially during the hot Australian summer. It will not tolerate its root ball drying out.
  • Pruning & Maintenance: For landscape trees, no pruning is necessary; simply allow it to soar. For bonsai, aggressive and frequent pruning is required to manage its extreme vigour.
