Detailed Description and Specs
The Norfolk Island Pine (Araucaria heterophylla) is a truly unique and elegant conifer. Despite its name, it is not a true pine but a relative of the Monkey Puzzle and Bunya Pine. Native to Norfolk Island in the Pacific, it has adapted perfectly to life as a cherished indoor plant across Australia. Its defining feature is its incredible symmetry, with tiered branches emerging in a regular pattern, creating a naturally perfect silhouette.
This structure, combined with its soft, deep green foliage, has made it a popular alternative to the traditional Christmas tree for decades. It’s an ideal choice for a living, potted tree that can be decorated for the holidays and then enjoyed as a stunning houseplant for the rest of the year. Its tolerance for indoor conditions and warmer climates makes it a versatile and long-lasting addition to any plant collection.
Here’s why we think you’ll love the Norfolk Island Pine:
- Species: Araucaria heterophylla
- Common Uses: Indoor Feature Plant, Living Christmas Tree
- Foliage: Soft, deep green needles
- Growth Habit: Symmetrical and tiered
- Climate: Thrives indoors; suitable for warmer climates.
Care and Planting Guide
The Norfolk Island Pine is a relatively easy-care plant, but it thrives on consistency.
Light & Location: It requires bright, indirect light. A spot near a window but out of the harsh, direct afternoon sun is perfect. Rotate the plant every week or two to ensure all sides get light, which encourages its symmetrical growth.
Watering: Water thoroughly when the top few centimetres of soil are dry, but do not let it sit in a saucer of water, as it dislikes “wet feet”. Reduce watering in winter. It appreciates a good misting, especially in dry, heated homes.
Using as a Christmas Tree: Its soft branches are best suited for light ornaments and LED lights that don’t produce heat. Avoid heavy, bulky decorations. Limit its time in a dark corner; try to keep it in a bright location, even when decorated.
