The Holy Grail of Antarctic Flora
The Patagonian Cypress (Fitzroya cupressoides), known natively in South America as the Alerce, is a living monument to the ancient Gondwanan supercontinent. In fact, the fossil record shows that a closely related species (Fitzroya tasmanensis) once blanketed southeastern Australia millions of years ago. Today, securing authentic Fitzroya in Australia is an incredibly rare feat. Because viable seed is notoriously difficult to procure from Chile, our highly limited 200mm stock (standing 50–65cm tall) is meticulously propagated from cuttings taken from established, climate-hardened trees in the cool, misty Dandenong Ranges. This is not a novice species; it is an advanced, uncompromising conifer that demands cool summers, high humidity, and total protection from drying winds. For the serious arboretum curator, advanced bonsai artist, or dedicated collector with the right microclimate, Sequoia Valley Farms offers Australia’s premier, TAS-certified supply of this Patagonian legend.
Pot Size: 200mm (Winter Release – Strictly Limited)
Est. Height: 50–65cm (Measured from the base of the pot)
Mature Size: Up to 40m+ in native habitat (significantly smaller in cultivation)
Growth Habit: Majestic pyramidal conifer with weeping, scale-covered branchlets
Style: Advanced Collector Specimen / Premium Bonsai / Gondwana Arboretum
ADVANCED CULTIVATION WARNING*
*Fitzroya cupressoides is an uncompromising cool-climate species. It will not survive in hot, dry, or humid lowland climates (such as QLD, WA, or NT). It requires specific microclimates—think the misty valleys of Robertson, Kangaloon, Burrawang, or the Dandenongs—with high humidity and protection from hot summer winds.
The Fitzroya cupressoides (Patagonian Cypress or Alerce) is the largest tree species in South America and one of the longest-living organisms on Earth, with specimens known to exceed 3,600 years of age. A monotypic genus within the Cupressaceae family, it features stunning, weeping branchlets covered in tiny, scale-like leaves adorned with distinctive white stomatal bands.
Because of its exquisite foliage and incredibly slow growth rate, it is highly prized by master bonsai artists and collectors of rare Antarctic flora. We only offer small, seasonal batches of cutting-grown stock, making this one of the most exclusive plants in our catalogue. If you have the right cool-climate environment and wish to buy a Patagonian Cypress, SVF provides unparalleled access to this ancient botanical masterpiece.
- The Pinnacle of Collecting: Very few nurseries possess the botanical network required to source and successfully propagate true Fitzroya in Australia.
- Exquisite Weeping Habit: Displays elegant, pendulous branchlets that provide stunning architectural texture in a cool-climate landscape.
- Advanced Bonsai Material: Highly sought after by master bonsai artists for its fine foliage, ancient appearance, and incredibly slow growth rate.
- Deep Gondwana Ties: Reintroduce a botanical cousin of Australia's extinct prehistoric flora (Fitzroya tasmanensis) back into the landscape.

Detailed Description and Specs
The Patagonian Cypress (Fitzroya cupressoides), commonly known as the Alerce, is a towering, evergreen conifer native to the Valdivian temperate rainforests of the southern Andes. It is a monotypic genus in the Cupressaceae family and is renowned for its immense longevity.
In cultivation, it forms a conical to pyramidal shape with graceful, pendulous (weeping) outer branchlets. The foliage is exquisite: tiny, scale-like leaves arranged in whorls of three, marked with highly distinctive white stomatal bands on their undersides, giving the tree a frosted or silvery-green appearance. The bark is reddish-brown and peels in vertical strips. It produces very small, woody, globose seed cones.
- Species: Fitzroya cupressoides (Patagonian Cypress / Alerce)
- Foliage: Scale-like, weeping green leaves with distinct white stomatal bands.
- Bark: Reddish-brown, peeling in vertical strips.
- Growth Rate: Very slow.
- Best For: Advanced bonsai, Gondwana arboretums, and specialized cool-climate, high-rainfall gardens.
Care and Planting Guide
The Alerce is an advanced species that will absolutely not tolerate hot, drying winds or prolonged drought.
- Sunlight & Location: Prefers dappled shade or morning sun when young. It must be planted in a sheltered microclimate, protected from hot afternoon summer sun and drying northwesterly winds. Misty, humid gullies are ideal.
- Soil & Drainage: Requires deep, rich, slightly acidic soils with high organic content. While it needs constant moisture, the soil must be free-draining. It will not tolerate stagnant, swampy clay.
- Watering: The root zone must never be allowed to dry out completely. Regular, deep watering is essential during summer. A thick, cool layer of organic leaf mulch is mandatory.
- Humidity: High ambient humidity is critical for this species. Foliage may brown or scorch if exposed to prolonged dry heat.

Western Australia, Northern Territory & Queensland
While WA and NT orders can theoretically be processed via the Plant Concierge, we strongly advise against purchasing this species for QLD, WA, or NT. The Alerce is a strict cool-temperate rainforest species and will not survive the heat, aridity, or tropical humidity of these states.
