The Unrestricted Gateway to the Patagonian Holy Grail

The Guaitecas Cypress (Pilgerodendron uviferum) is a botanical masterpiece. As the southernmost conifer in the world, native to the freezing, waterlogged archipelagos of Patagonia, it holds “holy grail” status among serious Gondwana collectors and advanced bonsai artists. Historically, securing this species on the Australian mainland has been deeply frustrating—buyers are often locked out by restrictive wholesale minimums or “metro-only” delivery zones. At Sequoia Valley Farms, we are breaking down those barriers. Leveraging our premier, TAS-certified Victorian network, we offer robust, impeccably cultivated 200mm specimens standing 60–85cm tall. Whether you are seeking a single specimen for a prestige bonsai project or you are a Tasmanian collector utilising our low-minimum direct island supply, SVF is your premier, unrestricted destination for this magnificent extreme-climate survivor.

Accessible sourcing — bypass the industry standard of 5-plant minimums; single orders are welcome and shipped nationally
Bonsai prestige — highly sought-after material for artists looking to work with extremely rare, water-loving Cupressaceae
Direct TAS pathway — utilising our elite certified network to facilitate direct Tasmanian delivery with minimal friction
Extreme resilience — specifically evolved to thrive in freezing conditions and perpetually waterlogged, boggy soils

A CONIFER THAT LOVES WET FEET*
*Unlike almost every other conifer species, which will rapidly succumb to root rot in poorly drained soil, the Pilgerodendron has evolved to actively thrive in boggy, waterlogged, and highly acidic conditions.

When you buy a Guaitecas Cypress, you are acquiring a species that defines the absolute limits of tree survival. The Pilgerodendron uviferum is the only species in its genus, native to the remote, wind-blasted, and freezing coastal swamps of southern Chile and Argentina. In its native habitat, it forms dense, narrow spires that rise beautifully out of the Patagonian moorlands.

Its foliage consists of tightly overlapping, scale-like, rich green leaves arranged in perfectly uniform, four-ranked cross-pairs, giving the branchlets a distinctive square appearance. For the Australian grower, it offers a stunning, highly textural feature tree for the coolest, wettest parts of the garden where other plants would drown. We are proud to offer these exceptional 200mm specimens with unrestricted national shipping, securing SVF as the premier destination for Gondwana enthusiasts.

  • The Southernmost Conifer: Own a piece of botanical extreme geography. Native to the harsh archipelagos of Tierra del Fuego and Patagonia.
  • Bog & Swamp Tolerant: Solves the ultimate landscape problem: it thrives in areas with poor drainage, heavy rainfall, and perpetual soil moisture.
  • No Restrictive Minimums: Unlike competitors, we do not restrict buyers to wholesale minimums. Order exactly what you need for your collection.
  • Unique Square Foliage: The leaves are tightly appressed in four uniform rows, giving the branches a fascinating, highly textured, squarish look.

★★★★★
"Every other nursery I found wanted me to buy a minimum of 5 plants, or wouldn't ship to regional NSW. SVF shipped a single, flawless 200mm Pilgerodendron right to my door. It is now the prized centrepiece of my bonsai collection."
— Jonno G. — Bonsai Artist, Raymond Terrace (NSW)
★★★★★
"Finding Pilgerodendron uviferum is hard enough; getting it into Tasmania is usually impossible. SVF facilitated a direct order from their certified Victorian grower. The plants were 80cm tall and exceptionally healthy."
— Desmond H. — Cool-Climate Gardener, Deloraine (TAS)
★★★★★
"I have a natural low spot on my acreage that stays boggy all winter. These trees have absolutely thrived in conditions that killed my other conifers. The tightly overlapping foliage is botanically fascinating."
— Teresa A. — Acreage Owner, Piedmont (VIC)
Does this tree really like wet soil?
Yes! It is incredibly unique in the conifer world. In Patagonia, it naturally grows in swamps and peat bogs. It actively thrives in poorly drained, waterlogged, and acidic soils where most other trees would quickly die of root rot.
Do I have to buy a minimum quantity?
For standard mainland shipping (NSW, ACT, VIC, QLD, SA), there are absolutely no minimums. You can order a single 200mm specimen for your collection. (Note: A small minimum order quantity does apply strictly for direct Tasmania dispatch to cover specialised freight requirements.
Is it good for bonsai?
It is exceptional for bonsai. Its slow growth rate, tolerance for damp root environments, and highly textured, scale-like foliage make it a brilliant and highly unusual subject for advanced artists.
How is this propagated?
Due to the extreme slowness of seed germination for this species, our premium Victorian network cultivates these reliably from cuttings. This ensures genetic stability, excellent rooting vigor, and a consistent, high-quality supply.

Detailed Description and Specs

The Guaitecas Cypress (Pilgerodendron uviferum) is a highly specialized, slow-growing evergreen conifer belonging to the Cupressaceae family. It is famous for being the southernmost conifer on Earth, native to the rugged, cold, and wet Patagonian regions of southern Chile and Argentina.

It typically forms a narrow, spire-like conical crown. The bark is dark brownish-grey and peels in long strips. The foliage is its most striking feature: the leaves are scale-like, rich green, and arranged in opposite decussate pairs (four uniform rows), giving the shoots a distinctive four-angled, square appearance. It produces small, woody seed cones that mature to a reddish-brown.

  • Species: Pilgerodendron uviferum (Guaitecas Cypress)
  • Provenance: Premier TAS-Certified Victorian Network.
  • Growth Rate: Slow.
  • Foliage: Four-ranked, tightly overlapping green scales.
  • Best For: Rare plant collections, bonsai, and poorly-drained bog gardens.

Care and Planting Guide

This is a species for the cool-climate gardener and requires specific conditions that differ wildly from standard conifers.

  • Sunlight & Location: Performs well in full sun to partial shade. In the Australian mainland, it must be protected from hot, drying summer winds, which it rarely experiences in its native maritime climate.
  • Soil & Drainage: The wetter, the better. It thrives in heavy, moisture-retentive soils, peaty soils, and areas with poor drainage. It favours slightly acidic conditions.
  • Watering: Never allow the root ball to dry out. It requires high, consistent moisture year-round. It is entirely intolerant of drought.
  • Climate Warning: This is a strict cool-climate species. It performs best in TAS, southern VIC, and elevated, cool regions of NSW. It will not tolerate hot, arid inland climates or tropical humidity.
