The Crown Jewel of the Eastern Rainforests

Known variously as Pinkwood, Plumwood, or the Eastern Leatherwood, Eucryphia moorei is one of the most spectacular flowering trees native to the cool temperate rainforests of Australia’s east coast. Endemic to a highly specific, moisture-rich band stretching from our own backyard in the Southern Highlands (including the misty groves of Robertson and Kangaloon) down the NSW South Coast and into the far eastern pockets of Victoria, this tree is a true regional treasure. At Sequoia Valley Farms, we are deeply passionate about this local Gondwana survivor. We offer exceptionally vigorous 140mm specimens that, despite their pot size, are already pushing 60-80cm tall. Whether you are re-establishing a native rainforest canopy, attracting local pollinators, or seeking a highly ornamental flowering feature tree, our curated stock provides the perfect starting point.

Exceptional vigour — our 140mm stock is remarkably fast-growing, already reaching 60–80cm

UNDERSTANDING OUR VIGOROUS 140MM STOCK*
*Eucryphia moorei is a fast-growing species in its juvenile stages. Our 140mm pots contain highly advanced, tall saplings (60–80cm) ready for immediate planting.

The Pinkwood (Eucryphia moorei) is the mainland cousin of the famous Tasmanian Leatherwood (Eucryphia lucida). Where the Tasmanian species has simple leaves, the Pinkwood boasts stunning, complex pinnate foliage—dark green above and pale beneath—that gives the tree a soft, fern-like appearance. From late summer into autumn, the tree transforms into a breathtaking visual display, smothering itself in delicate, cup-shaped white flowers that feature a prominent boss of feathery stamens.

Because it naturally occurs in the sheltered, misty valleys of the Illawarra escarpment and the Southern Highlands, it thrives beautifully in cool, moist, sheltered garden positions. Commercial availability of this species is incredibly scant across Australia. If you want to buy a Pinkwood tree to create a spectacular native flowering feature, our robust, tall 140mm stock is expertly cultivated to establish quickly in your landscape.

  • Spectacular White Blooms: Produces masses of beautiful, fragrant white flowers resembling wild roses from late summer to autumn.
  • The Eastern Leatherwood: Like its famous Tasmanian cousin, the nectar-rich flowers of the Pinkwood are a magnet for birds, bees, and native pollinators.
  • Highly Ornamental Foliage: Features gorgeous, leathery, dark-green pinnate (feather-like) leaves that provide a lush, dense tropical aesthetic to cool-climate gardens.
  • Fast Canopy Establishment: A surprisingly fast grower when its roots are kept cool and moist, allowing you to establish a rainforest canopy much faster than with other Gondwana species.

★★★★★
"Finding Eastern Leatherwood online is almost impossible. I was thrilled to see SVF stocking it. The foliage is beautiful, and I can't wait for the late summer flowers."
— Simona T. — Rainforest Enthusiast, Illawarra (NSW)
★★★★★
"We needed specific native provenance trees for a revegetation project in East Gippsland. SVF’s Pinkwood saplings were incredibly vigorous and established perfectly in our moist, sheltered gully."
— Paul R. — Landcare Coordinator, East Gippsland (VIC)
Why does it have so many names (Pinkwood, Plumwood, Eastern Leatherwood)?
Common names vary wildly by region! It is often called Eastern Leatherwood because it is the mainland equivalent of the famous Tasmanian Leatherwood (E. lucida). It earned the names Pinkwood and Plumwood from the early timber industry, referencing the beautiful rosy-pink heartwood of mature trees.
Can it handle full sun?
As a rainforest understory tree, it prefers its root zone to be deeply shaded and cool. It will grow up into the sun to flower, but when young, it performs best in dappled shade, morning sun, or a sheltered easterly/southerly aspect protected from harsh, drying afternoon heat.
Is it related to the Tasmanian Leatherwood?
Yes. Eucryphia moorei (Pinkwood) and Eucryphia lucida (Tasmanian Leatherwood) belong to the same ancient Gondwanan genus. The easiest way to tell them apart is the foliage: the Pinkwood has complex, pinnate (multi-leaflet) leaves, while the Tasmanian Leatherwood has simple, single leaves.
Can you ship this to Tasmania, WA, or NT?
Yes, but with conditions. Because this stock is cultivated at our Mittagong nursery, all orders heading to strict quarantine states (WA, NT, TAS) must pass through our Plant Concierge for biosecurity treatment. Our tall 140mm stock easily clears the maximum size limits for Express Post.

Detailed Description and Specs

The Pinkwood, Plumwood, or Eastern Leatherwood (Eucryphia moorei) is a highly ornamental, evergreen rainforest tree. It is a Gondwana relic, geographically isolated in the cool, moist, high-altitude gullies and rainforests stretching from the Illawarra escarpment and the Southern Highlands of NSW down to the easternmost corner of Victoria.

The tree forms a highly attractive, dense canopy of dark green, leathery, pinnate leaves. From February through to April, the tree puts on a spectacular display, flowering profusely with simple, cup-shaped, brilliant white blooms measuring up to 2.5cm across. These flowers feature a prominent cluster of stamens and are incredibly rich in nectar, making it a critical late-season food source for native biodiversity.

  • Species: Eucryphia moorei (Pinkwood / Plumwood / Eastern Leatherwood)
  • Foliage: Dark green, leathery, pinnate leaves with pale undersides.
  • Flowers: Abundant, delicate white cup-shaped blooms with prominent stamens (Late Summer/Autumn).
  • Bark: Scaly and grey-brown, covering a highly prized pinkish heartwood.
  • Best For: Rainforest gardens, sheltered gullies, understory planting, and pollinator attraction.

Care and Planting Guide

Replicating the cool, damp environment of an eastern rainforest gully is the key to thriving Pinkwood specimens.

  • Sunlight & Location: Plant in a sheltered position protected from hot, dry summer winds. It thrives in dappled light or morning sun. If planted in a sunnier spot, the root zone must be heavily shaded by surrounding plants or boulders.
  • Soil & Drainage: Requires deep, rich, friable loams with high organic content. Excellent drainage is essential, but the soil must be highly moisture-retentive.
  • Watering: It is highly sensitive to drought. The root system is shallow and must be kept consistently moist. A thick, 75mm to 100mm layer of organic mulch (such as leaf litter or compost) is mandatory year-round to keep the roots cool and damp.
  • Pruning: Minimal pruning is required. You can lightly tip-prune young plants after flowering to encourage a denser, bushier habit.
