The Only Blue Tree in Our Range, for a Short and Spectacular Christmas

A Colorado Blue Spruce is the collector’s Christmas tree: grey-blue needles no other tree in our range can offer, and the strongest branches our grower rates, made for heavy glass and heirloom ornaments. This is the first season Spruced, the specialist grower we have worked with since 2022, has cut them, in one size and in limited numbers. It comes with a trade we would rather state now. A Blue Spruce drops its needles sooner than a fir or a pine, so it is a tree for a short, spectacular display: bring it in late, keep it in water, keep it cool.

The only blue Christmas tree in our range, in its first season as a fresh-cut tree from Spruced, a specialist Christmas tree grower
Straight talk on display life: needles drop sooner than a fir or a pine, so we tell you how to time it and how to care for it
Collected from the grower in the week of your delivery or collection, never held in a yard for weeks
Booked to a delivery slot in your corridor, with a tracking link and a text when the van is close

Height: Measured from the cut base of the trunk to the tip of the leader
Growth Habit: A dense, even cone of stiff, grey-blue needles on very strong branches
Display Life: Short. Needles drop sooner than a fir or a pine; plan on about two weeks at its best, brought in late and kept in water
Style: The collector’s tree: the only blue in our range, built for heavy ornaments, in a small first-season release

HEIGHT: 5FT (APPROX. 1.5 M), ONE SIZE*
*Height is measured from the cut base of the trunk to the tip of the leader. Every tree is graded by the grower to its size band; natural variation of a few centimetres is normal. Add roughly 10cm for a stand. The photographs on this page are stock photographs of Colorado Blue Spruce growing outdoors, shown so you can see the species. They are not photographs of the trees we deliver: yours is a farm-grown tree of about 5ft, and its shape and its shade of blue will differ from the trees pictured.

Every other tree we deliver is green. A real Colorado Blue Spruce Christmas tree is grey-blue from the trunk to the tip, the colour of the high Rocky Mountains it comes from, and the blue is in the needle itself: a fine coat of wax over a green leaf. The needles are short, stiff and four-sided, and they stand out all around the shoot, so the tree reads as a dense, even cone with real architecture. The branches under them are the strongest our grower rates. Heavy glass, a grandmother’s baubles, the ornaments that make a fir or a pine sag: this is the tree that carries them, and carries them out along the branch as well as close to the trunk.

Here is the trade, and it belongs up front. A Blue Spruce holds its needles for less time than any other tree we sell. Our grower rates its needle retention the lowest in the range, and we agree with that rating. The colour stays; the needles do not. So this is a tree for a short, spectacular display, and it rewards three habits: bring it indoors late, about two weeks before Christmas; keep its stand full of water, every day, without fail; and keep it cool, away from sun, heaters and air-conditioner vents. Looked after that way, plan on about two weeks at its best, and expect it to shed sooner than a fir. If you want a tree that stands in the lounge room from the first of December to New Year, our Douglas Fir or Monterey Pine is the better choice, and we would rather you chose one of those than be disappointed in this.

It comes in one size, 5ft, chosen for the room most people have. It stands clear of an ordinary ceiling with space for a star; it suits an apartment, a bay window or a second tree in a dining room, and one person can carry it in and stand it up. A Blue Spruce is slow: by our grower’s reckoning it takes eight to ten years to reach two metres, so each of these trees has been years in the growing. Ours come from Spruced, a specialist Christmas tree grower we have partnered with since 2022, and this is the first season they have offered the species fresh-cut, in limited numbers. Three smaller things to know: the needles are sharp, so decorate with gloves and think about small hands and paws; it has almost no fragrance; and the blue varies a little from tree to tree, from grey-blue to silver, so a shade cannot be chosen.

  • The Only Blue in the Range: Grey-blue needles from trunk to tip, a colour that comes from wax on the needle and holds after the tree is cut.
  • Branches for Heavy Ornaments: The strongest branches our grower rates. Glass and heirloom pieces hang out along the branch without it sagging.
  • A Short, Spectacular Display: Needles drop sooner than a fir or a pine. Bring it in late, keep it watered and cool, and plan on about two weeks at its best.
  • Years in the Growing, Few to Go Round: A slow tree: eight to ten years to reach two metres. First season fresh-cut, one size, limited numbers.

Add Our Setup Service

We carry the tree in, make the fresh cut, lock it into your own stand until it stands straight, take the netting off and take the mess away with us. With this tree, it also means the sharp needles are our job and not yours. You provide the stand.
How long will a fresh-cut Blue Spruce last indoors?
Plan on about two weeks at its best, which is a shorter display than a fir or a pine. Of all the trees our grower cuts, the Blue Spruce is rated lowest for holding its needles, and published advice from the United States, where it is a common Christmas tree, is to set it up about two weeks before Christmas for the same reason. Its colour holds well after cutting; it is the needles that go. Three things make the difference: bring it indoors late, never let the stand run dry, and keep it in the coolest spot in the room. If you want the colour for a longer season, our potted Blue Spruce is a living tree.
When should I have it delivered, and what if my date is early?
Choose the latest delivery or collection date your corridor offers; the checker on this page shows them. If your date falls more than about two weeks before Christmas, the tree does not have to come inside the day it arrives. Take 2 to 3cm off the base, stand the trunk in a bucket of water in the coolest, fully shaded place you have, such as a garage or the south side of the house, and keep the bucket full. Bring it in and decorate it about two weeks before Christmas.
Will it hold heavy ornaments?
Yes. This is the tree for them. Our grower rates the Blue Spruce's branches the strongest of any tree in the range. The branches are stout and stiff, and the short, rigid needles stand out all around the shoot, so glass baubles and heavier pieces can hang out along the branch and stay where you put them. Handle the tree gently once it is dressed: knocking a branch is what brings needles down.
Are the needles sharp, and does it have a scent?
Sharp, and very little. Each needle is stiff, four-sided and ends in a point; the species name, pungens, comes from the Latin for sharp. Wear gloves to hang lights and ornaments, and place the tree where small children and pets will not push into it. If soft needles matter most in your house this year, our Douglas Fir is the gentler tree. As for scent, this is the least fragrant tree our grower cuts. If you want the house to smell like Christmas, choose the Monterey Pine.
What stand does it need?
A water-holding stand with a wide base and screws that tighten onto the trunk; one rated for trees up to 6ft is the right size. We do not sell stands, so please have yours ready before the tree arrives. Choose one with a generous reservoir if you can: as a guide, a cut tree uses about a litre of water a day for every 2.5cm of trunk diameter, so a small stand can run dry in a day. Check it morning and evening and never let the water drop below the base of the trunk. If you add our Setup Service, we fit the tree into your stand for you.
Where do you deliver, and do I need to be home?
We run our own van to four corridors: Greater Sydney, the Illawarra and South Coast as far as Kiama, the Southern Highlands, and the Blue Mountains. Enter your postcode in the checker on this page for your corridor, its dates and the delivery price, and book a slot at checkout. On the day, you receive a tracking link and a text when the van is close. If you have a safe, fully shaded place such as a porch or carport, leave a bucket of water out, and we will leave the tree there with a photo as proof of delivery. If you have added the Setup Service, we need you there. Outside the corridors, you are welcome to collect from our Mittagong HQ. This tree does not travel by courier.
Why is there only one size, and why does it cost more than the other trees?
Because of how slowly it grows and how few there are. By our grower's reckoning, a Blue Spruce takes eight to ten years to reach two metres, longer than a Douglas Fir and about twice as long as a pine grown for Christmas. This is the first season Spruced has offered it fresh-cut, in one size and in limited numbers. At 5ft it fits the room most people have and one person can carry it. When this season's trees are booked, there are no more until next year.

Detailed Description and Specs

The Colorado Blue Spruce (Picea pungens) is a mountain tree. It is native to the central and southern Rocky Mountains of the United States, from Wyoming and Idaho south through Utah and Colorado to New Mexico and Arizona, where it grows at roughly 1,800 to 3,000 metres, most often along streams and in well-watered valleys. Foresters describe it as a slow-growing, long-lived tree. Its needles are short, rigid and four-sided, each ending in a sharp point, which is what pungens means. The blue is a coat of wax on the surface of the needle, and how much of it a tree carries is inherited, so seed-grown trees range from green through grey-blue to silver. That colour, on an even cone of stout branches, has made it one of the most widely planted ornamental spruces, and in North America a prized Christmas tree.

In Australia, a cut Blue Spruce is seldom offered. Ours are grown by Spruced, a specialist Christmas tree grower we have partnered with since 2022, and this is the first season they have cut the species for Christmas: one size, 5ft, in limited numbers. By our grower’s reckoning, a Blue Spruce takes eight to ten years to reach two metres, which is why there are few of them and why they sit at the top of our range. Our grower rates it plainly: the strongest branches of any tree they cut, colour that holds well after cutting, the least fragrance, and the shortest needle life. We pass that on as given. It is a tree for the person who wants this colour and these branches for the fortnight around Christmas, and who will bring it in late, keep it watered and keep it cool to get them. We collect each week’s trees from the grower and bring them to the Southern Highlands for delivery and collection in the same week.

About the photographs: this is the first season for this tree, so we have no photographs of our own to show you yet. The images on this page are stock photographs of Colorado Blue Spruce growing outdoors, chosen to show the colour, the needles and the form of the species. They are not the trees we deliver. Yours is a farm-grown, fresh-cut tree of about 5ft.

Here’s why we think you’ll love the Real Colorado Blue Spruce Christmas Tree:

  • Species: Picea pungens (Colorado Blue Spruce; the bluest forms are often sold as ‘Glauca’)
  • Provenance: Native to the central and southern Rocky Mountains of the United States; grown for us by Spruced, a specialist Christmas tree grower, in its first season as a fresh-cut tree
  • Size: One size, 5ft (approx. 1.5m), measured from the cut base of the trunk to the tip of the leader; add roughly 10cm for a stand
  • Foliage: Short, stiff, four-sided needles with a sharp point, grey-blue to silver; the shade varies from tree to tree and cannot be selected
  • Branching: Very strong, stout branches in a dense, even cone; carries heavy ornaments out along the branch
  • Scent: Very little; the least fragrant tree our grower cuts
  • Display Life: Short. Needles drop sooner than a fir or a pine; plan on about two weeks at its best, brought in late, kept in water and kept cool
  • Best For: Collectors of glass and heirloom ornaments, decorators who want a colour no other real tree has, apartments and smaller rooms, and anyone who knew this tree overseas

Care and Planting Guide

A fresh-cut Blue Spruce is a tree for a short, spectacular display. It drops its needles sooner than a fir or a pine, and no care routine changes that. What care you give it decides whether you get its best fortnight or a few disappointing days. Three things matter more than everything else: bring it in late, keep it in water, keep it cool.

  • Bring It In Late: Plan to have the tree indoors and decorated about two weeks before Christmas, and book the latest delivery or collection date your corridor offers. If it arrives earlier, it can wait outside: make the fresh cut, stand the trunk in a bucket of water in the coolest, fully shaded spot you have, such as a garage or the south side of the house, and keep the bucket full until you are ready.
  • The First Cut: Just before the tree goes into water, take a straight slice of 2 to 3cm off the base of the trunk. A cut trunk seals over within hours, and a sealed trunk cannot drink however much water it stands in. Cut straight across, so the trunk sits flat in the stand; an angled cut or a hole drilled in the base does not help. If you have added our Setup Service, we make this cut for you on the spot.
  • Keep It in Water: Stand the tree in a water-holding stand straight after the cut and fill it with plain tap water. No sugar, no aspirin, no additives. As a guide, a cut tree uses about a litre a day for every 2.5cm of trunk diameter, and more in its first day or two. Check the stand morning and evening and never let the level drop below the base of the trunk. If it runs dry for more than a few hours the base seals again, and with this tree that is usually the end of the display.
  • Keep It Cool: Heat dries a cut tree, and a dry spruce sheds its needles. Choose the coolest position in the room, out of direct sun and well away from heaters, hot western windows and the direct airflow of an air conditioner. In a heatwave, close the blinds on that side of the house during the day.
  • Decorating: Wear gloves; the needles are sharp. Use LED lights, which run cool. The branches are very strong, so glass baubles and heavier ornaments can hang out along the branch as well as close to the trunk. Dress the tree once and then leave it alone: every knock and rearrangement brings needles down.
  • What to Expect: Some needles will fall from the first day, and more each day after the first week. That is this tree behaving normally. Put a tree skirt, mat or old sheet under the stand before you decorate, and vacuum around it without bumping the branches. The colour holds even as the needles thin.
  • When It Is Finished: When needles fall freely at a touch, or the branches feel dry and brittle, the tree is done and should go outside, whatever the date. A dry tree should not stay in the house under lights.
  • After Christmas: The tree goes out with your council green waste, or into the chipper if you have one. Remove every hook and strand of tinsel first. It cannot be planted; for a living tree, see our potted Blue Spruce.

Shipping and Delivery

Local delivery and Mittagong collection only
This is a fresh-cut tree and does not travel by courier. We bring it to you in our own van, or you collect it from our Mittagong HQ. Every tree is collected from the grower in the week you receive it; there are three grower runs across the season, and the last one is in the second week of December.

Choose a late date for this tree
A Blue Spruce is at its best for about two weeks, so the latest delivery or collection date your corridor offers is usually the right one. If your date is earlier, the Care Guide explains how to hold the tree outside in water until you are ready to bring it in.

Delivery, to a booked slot
We deliver to four corridors, each on its own days across the three weeks of the season:

  • Greater Sydney
  • Illawarra and South Coast, to Kiama
  • Southern Highlands
  • Blue Mountains

Enter your postcode in the checker at the top of this page to see your corridor, its delivery dates and the price. You choose a delivery date and slot at checkout; bookings close 24 hours before the slot so we can plan the run. On the day you receive a tracking link to follow the van, a text when we are close, and a photo as proof of delivery. If you have a safe, fully shaded spot such as a porch or carport, you do not need to be home: leave a bucket of water out and we will leave the tree there for you. If you have added the Setup Service, we need you there.

Collection from our Mittagong HQ
Our HQ is an off-site collection point in Mittagong, a few minutes from the Hume Highway on and off ramps. It is not a farm, and there is nothing to pick or walk through; your tree is netted and waiting with your name on it. Collection runs in booked windows on Wednesdays through the season, the day after the week’s trees arrive from the grower, and you choose your date and window at checkout. Collection suits customers outside our delivery corridors, including Canberra, Goulburn, the South Coast beyond Kiama and Western Sydney.

Getting your tree home from collection
Wind and sun dry a cut tree faster than anything else, and this is the tree that can least afford it. Please come with:

  • A drop sheet or tarp to protect your car from stray needles and water.
  • Old towels or blankets. We will happily wet the tree down before you leave; wrapping it in damp towels keeps it humid for the trip.
  • Gloves. The needles are sharp.

A 5ft tree fits inside most cars with the back seats down, including a hatchback, which keeps it out of the wind and sun entirely. Please do not carry this tree on a roof rack or uncovered in a ute. We net every tree and help you load it. Our Ultimate Christmas Tree Care Guide has the full version of this advice.
