How long will my Douglas Fir last?
With proper care, a fresh-cut Douglas Fir will last beautifully for 4-5 weeks. The key is to make a fresh cut on the trunk and get it into water within an hour of arriving home. Never let the water stand run dry, especially in the first week when it's most thirsty.
Do Douglas Firs drop many needles?
The Douglas Fir is known for its good needle retention. Some minimal needle drop is normal for any real tree, but excessive shedding is almost always a sign of thirst. Keep the water topped up, and your tree will remain lush and full throughout the festive season.
What does a Douglas Fir smell like?
Unlike the strong resin scent of pine, the Douglas Fir has a unique and sophisticated fragrance. It's often described as a mild, sweet, and refreshing scent with distinct citrus undertones—a truly elegant aroma that fills your home with a classic Christmas feeling.
How much water does it really need?
You'll be surprised how thirsty a fresh tree is! In its first 24 hours, it can drink up to 4 litres of water. For the first week, check the stand twice a day. As a general rule, it will need about 1 litre of water per inch of trunk diameter, per day.
Can you deliver to Greater Sydney & the Northern Beaches?
Yes. We are an official Spruced partner and run dedicated, temperature-controlled delivery routes to all of Sydney. Unlike local florists, we are conifer specialists and guarantee your tree arrives fresh, healthy, and backed by our 'Live GPS Delivery Tracking.'

Detailed Description and Specs

The Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) holds a special place in the story of Australian forestry. While now relatively rare locally, it was once a key species before the industry pivoted almost exclusively to Monterey Pine. This limited history means that an authentic, beautifully grown Douglas Fir is a unique and sought-after prize for Christmas connoisseurs.

Unlike the sharp, stiff needles of a pine, the Douglas Fir has soft, pliable needles that are a joy to handle. Its branches are dense and uniform, creating a very full silhouette. It’s worth noting that due to our climate, trees are often still ‘flushing’ (producing soft new growth) at harvest. This means the branch tips are more delicate and best suited for lighter, more graceful decorations, which only adds to their elegant appeal.

Here’s why we think you’ll love the Real Christmas Tree Douglas Fir:

  • Species: Pseudotsuga menziesii (Douglas Fir)
  • Scent: Mild, sweet, with citrus undertones
  • Needles: Soft, flat, and flexible
  • Form: Full, dense, conical shape

Care and Planting Guide

Keeping your fresh-cut tree in pristine condition is all about one thing: water! A fresh tree is a thirsty tree.

The First Cut is Crucial: As soon as you get your tree home, you must take a thin slice (2-3cm) off the bottom of the trunk. When a tree is cut, sap seals the base within hours, preventing it from absorbing water. This fresh cut reopens the trunk’s pores.

Immediate Hydration: Place the tree in a water-holding stand immediately after making the cut. Fill the stand with fresh, plain tap water.

Water, Water, Water: Check the water level daily. For the first few days, your tree can drink several litres of water a day. Never let the water level drop below the base of the trunk.

Watch for Stress: Keep the tree away from direct heat sources (heaters, vents, direct sunlight). If needles start to feel brittle, it’s a sign the tree is thirsty.

Shipping and Delivery

We offer dedicated delivery of all tree sizes to our key service areas:

  • Greater Sydney
  • Southern Highlands
  • Blue Mountains
  • Illawarra & South Coast (to Kiama)

Please use the postcode checker at the top of the page for an accurate delivery price.

HQ Pickup (Mittagong, NSW) You can collect your tree directly from our off-site HQ in the centre of Mittagong. This is a great option for our customers who live just outside our delivery zones and are willing to make the scenic drive, including from areas like Canberra, Goulburn, the Central Coast, and the greater South Coast. Our HQ is conveniently located close to the Hume Highway on/off ramps.

Preparing for a Safe Trip Home: Transporting your fresh-cut tree correctly is the first and most crucial step to ensuring it stays pristine for Christmas, especially during the Australian summer. Strong winds and direct sun can quickly dry out the needles.

Please come prepared with the following:

  • A Drop Sheet or Tarp: To protect your car’s interior from any stray needles or moisture.
  • Old Towels or Blankets: We will gladly moisten your tree before you leave to create a humid “cocoon” for its journey. Wrapping it in damp towels is the perfect way to keep it fresh.

Best Method: Inside Your Vehicle. Most of our trees will fit inside a standard car with the back seats flattened. This is the safest way to protect your tree from wind and sun. For utes, please ensure the tree is completely covered.

A Note on Roof Racks: We strongly advise against transporting your tree on a roof rack. Even on a short trip, the combination of high-speed wind and sun can cause severe damage to the needles.

Our team will be on hand to help you professionally net and safely load your tree for its journey.
