The Apex of Australian Nothofagus Propagation

The Nothofagus obliqua—known locally in South America as the Roble, Pellín, or Patagonian Oak—is a holy grail for cool-climate deciduous collectors. At Sequoia Valley Farms, this species is our mastercraft. Over the past eight years, we have poured significant resources into legally importing authentic Patagonian seed and perfecting the incredibly complex propagation of this species entirely in-house. We do not rely on external growers or ghost-stock networks; we are the true source. Our stock is so highly regarded that SVF-grown specimens have been selected for planting at the National Botanic Gardens in Canberra. Currently available in highly vigorous 140mm specimens (standing a remarkable 60–75cm tall due to their rapid growth rate), these trees are pre-acclimatised to the Australian cool-temperate climate right here in Mittagong. For collectors, arboretums, and landscape architects seeking the genuine Roble Beech, SVF is the undisputed authority.

100% in-house production — grown from directly imported seed with no third-party outsourcing
National-grade quality — our meticulously propagated stock is trusted by national botanical institutions
Broad adaptability — significantly more forgiving and adaptable than many other Gondwanan Nothofagus species
Commercial scaling available — we can fulfil bulk landscape and municipal orders with an 18-month lead time

A NOTE ON SCARCITY & SUPPLY*
*Because propagating this species from imported seed is highly complex, it is exceptionally rare to find active, available stock in the Australian nursery industry. We are incredibly proud to be a primary grower of this species, cultivating our plants entirely in-house to ensure a reliable supply.

The Nothofagus obliqua is a deciduous giant native to the majestic Andean forests of Chile and Argentina. In Spanish, it is commonly called “Roble” (meaning Oak) due to the incredible strength of its timber, or “Hualle” when referring to young trees. Unlike some of the more temperamental evergreen southern beeches, the Patagonian Oak boasts fantastic climatic plasticity, showing much greater suitability across a broader range of Australian cool-temperate conditions, very similar to Nothofagus glauca.

It is celebrated globally for its deeply fissured bark and its stunning, serrated leaves that erupt into a fiery spectacle of gold, bronze, and deep red in autumn. Because it is a naturally vigorous species, our 140mm stock is already well-developed, standing up to 75cm tall. If you want to buy a Nothofagus obliqua in Australia, you are purchasing directly from the master propagators who have dedicated nearly a decade to securing this ancient Gondwanan lineage on our shores.

  • Spectacular Autumn Colour: As a deciduous Nothofagus, its serrated foliage puts on a brilliant, fiery display of yellow, orange, and red before winter dormancy.
  • Vigorous Establishment: A fast, strong grower in its youth. Our 140mm stock is highly advanced (60-75cm) and ready to rocket up in your landscape.
  • Broader Climate Plasticity: Pre-acclimatised at our Mittagong estate, it is significantly more adaptable to varied soil and climate conditions than many evergreen beeches.
  • Botanic Garden Quality: Cultivated with such precision and botanical integrity that SVF-grown specimens have been selected for national-level plantings.

★★★★★
"I had almost given up finding a real Roble Beech in Australia. Other sites charged a fortune and never had stock. SVF’s 140mm plant arrived incredibly fast, standing almost 70cm tall, with perfect foliage."
— Julian R. — Rare Tree Collector, Mount Macedon (VIC)
★★★★★
"Knowing that SVF supplies botanical gardens gave me absolute confidence. The Nothofagus obliqua is thriving in our cool-climate garden, and the autumn colour is breathtaking. Unmatched propagation expertise."
— Agustina M. — Cool Climate Gardener, Blue Mountains (NSW)
★★★★★
"The vigour of these trees is amazing. I planted three of SVF's 140mm Roble beeches to form a canopy, and their growth rate in the first spring was phenomenal. Truly acclimatised stock."
— Thomas W. — Acreage Owner, Southern Highlands (NSW)
Why is this tree so expensive and rare elsewhere?
Legally importing viable seed from South America is incredibly difficult, and breaking the seed dormancy requires highly specialised horticultural knowledge. Most nurseries simply do not have the expertise. We have spent 8 years mastering this process in-house to become Australia's definitive source.
What are the different common names for this tree?
Because it is native to Chile and Argentina, it goes by several names. In English, it is the Patagonian Oak or Roble Beech. In South America, it is widely called Roble, Pellín (referring to mature heartwood), or Hualle (referring to young trees).
Will it grow in my climate?
Nothofagus obliqua is highly adaptable for a southern beech, but it is still a cool-temperate species. It thrives in TAS, VIC, the ACT, and in elevated areas of NSW (such as the Southern Highlands and Blue Mountains). It will not survive in hot, humid, tropical climates.
Do you offer bulk supply for landscape projects?
Yes. Because we control the entire propagation process from seed, we can grow to order for municipal, arboretum, and commercial landscape projects. We require an 18-month lead time for bulk tubestock/140mm production. Contact us directly to secure your contract.

Detailed Description and Specs

The Nothofagus obliqua (Patagonian Oak, Roble, or Pellín) is a magnificent, fast-growing deciduous tree belonging to the Nothofagaceae family. Native to the temperate Valdivian forests of central Chile and adjacent Argentina, it is a vital component of the Gondwanan floral heritage.

In the wild, it can reach towering heights of up to 40 metres, developing a massive trunk with deeply fissured, greyish-brown bark. The leaves are alternating, ovate, and beautifully serrated with distinct, prominent veining. Unlike many of its evergreen Australian cousins, the Roble Beech is deciduous. In autumn, the foliage transforms from deep green into a breathtaking array of vibrant golds, bronzes, and fiery reds. The tree produces small, inconspicuous flowers followed by tiny nutlets enclosed in cupules.

  • Species: Nothofagus obliqua (Patagonian Oak / Roble Beech / Pellín)
  • Foliage: Deciduous, serrated green leaves turning gold/red in autumn.
  • Bark: Deeply fissured, grey-brown in maturity.
  • Growth Rate: Highly vigorous in its youth.
  • Best For: Large cool-climate gardens, arboretums, avenues, and premium Gondwana collections.

Care and Planting Guide

The Patagonian Oak exhibits excellent plasticity, making it one of the more adaptable and rewarding Nothofagus species to cultivate in Australia.

  • Sunlight & Location: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Young plants benefit from dappled light or protection from the harshest afternoon summer sun until their deep root systems are established. Ensure it has ample space to accommodate its large mature canopy.
  • Soil & Drainage: It thrives in deep, fertile, moisture-retentive loams. While it is more adaptable than other beeches, it requires good drainage and will suffer in stagnant, waterlogged clay.
  • Watering: It requires consistent moisture, particularly during the hot Australian summer. Apply a thick layer of organic mulch (such as leaf mould or compost) to keep the root zone cool and insulated.
  • Pruning: Minimal pruning is required. It naturally develops a strong, dominant central leader and a well-spaced branching structure.
