Nothofagus cunninghamii, known as the Myrtle Beech or Southern Beech, is an evergreen shrub or tree native to Victoria and Tasmanian. It can reach up to 30 metres with a spread of 8 metres in cool temperate rainforest settings but frequently reaches heights between 8 and 10 metres in garden settings. It has beautiful orangey-red to pink new shoots and ovate leaves that form a fan as they branch out.

The Myrtle Beech works well in moist, well-drained, organically rich soil in areas with high rainfalls. Frost and snow tolerant. Semi-shade and partial sun are preferred, or shade while establishing. It can be pruned for large hedges when planted together. This tree is a stunning architectural ornamental and a must-have for serious collectors.
