The Living Memorial of the Australian Landscape

The Aleppo Pine (Pinus halepensis) is etched into the very fabric of Australian history. While the Turkish Pine (Pinus brutia) is the true native species of the Gallipoli peninsula, it was the Aleppo Pine—grown from a cone brought home by an ANZAC soldier—that was famously planted at the Australian War Memorial. Today, it serves as the living embodiment of the “Lone Pine” memorial across hundreds of Australian schools and parks. Beyond its profound commemorative status, it is a rugged, incredibly resilient Mediterranean conifer built for Australia’s harshest dry conditions. While our in-house, seed-grown 140mm tubestock thrived during the deep drought years of 2018–2020, this species demands dry summers and resents prolonged wet periods. As we prepare our next generation of estate-grown seedlings, we are leveraging our elite network to source advanced specimens—from 500mm pots up to 100L feature trees. Whether you are planning a commemorative planting or needing an unbreakable coastal windbreak, SVF is your premier facilitator.

CLIMATE WARNING: DRY SUMMERS REQUIRED*
*The Aleppo Pine is a Mediterranean species. It requires dry, hot summers and winter-dominant rainfall to thrive (such as conditions found in the ACT, inland NSW, SA, and parts of VIC). It will struggle or perish in areas with high summer humidity, heavy subtropical rainfall, or prolonged waterlogged soils.

The Pinus halepensis (Aleppo Pine or Jerusalem Pine) is a tree of immense character and historical gravity. Characterised by its bright, pale-green needles (borne in pairs), silvery-grey branches, and reddish-brown fissured bark, it grows into a rugged, broad-canopied shade tree. In Australia, it holds a sacred place in our culture. Due to a famous historical quirk of seed collection during WW1, this is the species planted at the Australian War Memorial and widely distributed nationwide as the living “Lone Pine.”

Horticulturally, it is one of the toughest pines in existence. It will happily grow in poor, rocky, or calcareous soils, shrug off extreme coastal salt winds, and survive punishing droughts. If you are looking to buy an Aleppo Pine for a commemorative event or a challenging dry landscape, SVF has the elite network connections to source the perfect advanced specimen for your project.

  • Commemorative Excellence: The ultimate species for WW1 memorial plantings, connecting your landscape directly to Australian ANZAC history.
  • Coastal & Drought Champion: Highly tolerant of salt spray, punishing coastal winds, and extreme, extended periods of low rainfall.
  • Advanced Project Sourcing: We routinely assist schools, councils, and landscape architects in securing massive 500mm to 100L feature trees.
  • Rugged Bonsai Subject: The pale green needles, deeply fissured bark, and naturally twisted, rugged habit make it excellent material for advanced bonsai.

Is this the actual Lone Pine from Gallipoli?
This is a famous piece of botanical history! The pine natively growing on the Gallipoli peninsula is the Turkish Pine (Pinus brutia). However, the famous "Lone Pine" planted at the Australian War Memorial—and distributed to many schools and RSLs—is the Aleppo Pine (Pinus halepensis), grown from a cone brought back to Australia by an ANZAC soldier. Both species are proudly grown in Australia as living memorials.
Why is your 140mm stock currently unavailable?
We grow our 140mm Aleppo Pines from seed in-house. While they thrived during the drought years, this species naturally struggles in the cool, extremely wet La Niña conditions we recently experienced here in the Southern Highlands. We are sowing fresh seed this spring and have an active waitlist! In the meantime, should you wish to secure a tree sooner, we can tap into our elite grower network to source larger, advanced specimens for you.
Can you help me find a large tree for a memorial?
We have a premium network across NSW and VIC and frequently facilitate the sourcing and transport of advanced 500mm, 75L, and 100L Aleppo Pines for schools, councils, and RSL branches.
Why can't you ship this to WA or NT?
Pinus halepensis is an incredibly tough, fast-growing tree that reproduces easily via wind-blown seed. Because of this, it is classified as an environmental weed risk in certain vulnerable native ecosystems. We strictly abide by state biosecurity regulations to protect local environments.

Detailed Description and Specs

The Aleppo Pine (Pinus halepensis) is a fast-growing, medium-sized coniferous tree native to the Mediterranean region. In Australia, it holds immense cultural significance as the “Lone Pine,” widely planted as a living memorial to the ANZAC forces of World War 1.

It typically forms a slender trunk in its youth before developing a broad, domed, and often delightfully irregular or leaning crown as it matures. The foliage consists of slender, pale yellowish-green needles (usually 6-12cm long) paired in fascicles. The bark is smooth and silvery-grey on young branches, maturing into deeply fissured, reddish-brown plates on the lower trunk. It produces distinctive, symmetrical, reddish-brown cones borne on thick, curved stalks.

  • Species: Pinus halepensis (Aleppo Pine / Lone Pine / Jerusalem Pine)
  • Foliage: Pale green needles, borne in pairs.
  • Cones: Symmetrical, borne on curved stalks.
  • Growth Rate: Fast (in dry, warm climates).
  • Best For: WW1 memorial plantings, coastal windbreaks, dry acreage, and bonsai.

Care and Planting Guide

The Aleppo Pine is a rugged survivor, but it absolutely demands a Mediterranean-style climate to truly thrive.

  • Sunlight & Location: Must be planted in full, blistering sun. It thrives in exposed, hot, and windy sites, including direct coastal exposure with salt spray.
  • Soil & Drainage: Highly adaptable to poor, stony, sandy, and calcareous soils. Excellent drainage is non-negotiable. It will suffer from root rot and fungal issues if planted in heavy, perpetually waterlogged clay.
  • Watering: Water deeply to establish the taproot during the first year. Once established, it is extremely drought-tolerant and should be left to rely on natural rainfall. Do not overwater.
  • Climate Warning: Performs exceptionally well in VIC, SA, ACT, and inland/tableland NSW. It will struggle in areas with high summer humidity or heavy subtropical rainfall.
