The Ancient Andean Conifer for the Discerning Collector
The Prumnopitys andina—known globally as the Andean Plum Yew or ‘Lleuque’—is a masterclass in botanical elegance. Native to the cool-temperate subalpine valleys of the Chilean and Argentine Andes, it is a magnificent evergreen member of the ancient Podocarpaceae family. Securing this species in Australia is notoriously difficult; the seed is challenging to import and incredibly stubborn to germinate. At Sequoia Valley Farms, we have bypassed the bottlenecks to bring you an elite, uninterrupted supply. Partnering exclusively with a premium, TAS-certified specialist grower, we offer beautifully established 200mm specimens standing 50–70cm tall. Because of our rigorous supply chain, we are uniquely positioned to provide not just single plants for the rare conifer collector, but also bulk and landscape orders across the mainland and directly into Tasmania, without the standard quarantine delays.

A RARITY IN AUSTRALIAN CULTIVATION*
*The Andean Plum Yew is frequently absent from the Australian nursery trade due to the extreme difficulty of importing and germinating its seed. Our consistent 200mm stock represents an elite, highly curated supply line.
The Prumnopitys andina is a spectacular evergreen conifer that commands respect. At first glance, its soft, linear, dark green leaves closely resemble those of the traditional European Yew (Taxus). However, it is an entirely different beast—a resilient survivor from the ancient Gondwanan supercontinent. Native to the Andes, it is known locally as ‘Lleuque’ and is famous for producing unique, fleshy, plum-like green arils (fruits) that are traditionally eaten by local wildlife and indigenous communities.
As a landscape tree, it forms a graceful, densely foliated canopy that thrives in cool-temperate conditions. Whether you are an arboretum curator, a passionate Gondwana collector, or a landscape architect requiring a bulk order of rare conifers, SVF is your pre-eminent Australian source. If you want to buy an Andean Plum Yew, our 200mm stock is robust, established, and ready to plant.
- Striking Yew-Like Foliage: Features beautiful, soft, linear dark-green needles that provide incredibly dense, elegant texture to cool-climate gardens.
- Gondwana Heritage: A highly sought-after member of the Podocarpaceae family, essential for collectors of ancient southern hemisphere flora.
- Direct Tasmanian Supply: Utilising our certified network, we can ship this rare species directly to TAS without the usual lengthy biosecurity hold-ups.
- Architectural Versatility: Brilliant as a standalone botanical specimen, a dense cool-climate screen, or as part of a curated conifer collection.

Detailed Description and Specs
The Prumnopitys andina (Andean Plum Yew or Lleuque) is a highly ornamental evergreen conifer native to the subalpine valleys of the Andes in south-central Chile and a few isolated valleys in western Argentina.
It grows into a graceful, medium-to-large tree with a dense, spreading crown. The foliage is its standout feature: soft, flattened, linear leaves (1.5 to 3 cm long) arranged spirally on the shoots, giving it a striking resemblance to the traditional yew. The bark is smooth and dark greyish-brown, flaking in older specimens. It is a dioecious species (separate male and female trees). The female trees produce unique, fleshy, pale-green, plum-like arils containing a single seed, which are highly prized by native wildlife in the Andes.
- Species: Prumnopitys andina (Andean Plum Yew / Lleuque / Chilean Plum Yew)
- Foliage: Soft, linear, dark-green yew-like leaves.
- Fruit: Fleshy, grape-like green arils (on mature female trees).
- Growth Rate: Slow to moderate.
- Best For: Rare conifer collections, Gondwana gardens, and premium cool-climate landscaping.
Care and Planting Guide
The Andean Plum Yew is a rewarding and relatively low-maintenance conifer when sited correctly in a cool-temperate environment.
- Sunlight & Location: Performs best in full sun to partial shade. In hotter mainland regions, providing dappled afternoon shade will protect the foliage from scorching during peak summer.
- Soil & Drainage: Prefers deep, fertile, slightly acidic soils. Good drainage is essential, though it appreciates consistent moisture. It will not tolerate extended periods in waterlogged, heavy clay.
- Watering: Keep the root zone consistently moist, especially during the establishment phase and hot summer months. A thick layer of organic mulch is highly recommended to keep the soil cool.
- Pruning: Requires virtually no pruning to maintain its elegant, spreading habit. It can, however, be lightly trimmed if being grown as a dense screen or hedge.
