The Ultimate Mainland Authority on the King Billy Pine
The King Billy Pine (Athrotaxis selaginoides) is an ancient, slow-growing evergreen conifer endemic entirely to the rugged montane rainforests of Tasmania. A true living fossil of the Gondwanan supercontinent, securing genuine, high-quality stock on the Australian mainland is notoriously difficult due to limited island propagation and strict biosecurity bottlenecks. At Sequoia Valley Farms, we have bridged this gap. We are one of the only active, regular mainland suppliers of this extraordinary species. We source premium tubestock directly from our elite Tasmanian grower network and expertly grow them on in the cool-climate environment of the Southern Highlands to produce robust, acclimatised 140mm specimens (25–35cm tall). Whether you are a dedicated Tasmanian local utilising our direct island-to-island supply, a mainland collector building an Antarctic flora arboretum, or a serious bonsai artist seeking prestige material, SVF is your definitive source.

THE MAINLAND CONNECTION*
*Because it is an endemic Tasmanian alpine species with a very slow growth rate, commercial production of the King Billy Pine on the mainland is almost non-existent. Our curated 140mm releases offer collectors a rare, reliable supply line.
The Athrotaxis selaginoides (King Billy Pine) is a towering icon of Tasmania’s primeval forests and a cornerstone of the ancient Cupressaceae family. It is instantly recognisable by its spectacular, prehistoric appearance: thick, fleshy, awl-like leaves that curve inward like small green claws, and soft, spongy, orange-brown bark that furrows deeply with age. Historically, its timber was highly prized for boatbuilding, but today wild populations are strictly protected, making cultivated nursery stock highly sought after.
Due to its incredibly slow growth, rugged bark, and dense foliage, the King Billy Pine is considered a prestigious subject by advanced bonsai artists. It is also an absolute necessity for anyone curating a serious collection of Gondwanan or Antarctic flora. By utilising our elite Tasmanian network and our Mittagong acclimatisation process, SVF provides an unbroken link to this island treasure. If you are looking to buy a King Billy Pine, join our waitlist to secure a specimen from our next limited 140mm release.
- Prehistoric Pedigree: A genuine living fossil representing the ancient temperate rainforests of Gondwana, closely related to the giant Sequoias.
- Prestige Bonsai Material: Extremely popular among bonsai artists for its rugged, spongy bark, tight foliage, and capacity to reflect ancient age in miniature.
- Cool-Climate Champion: Thrives in high-rainfall, cool-temperate areas like the Blue Mountains, TAS, the ACT, and the Victorian Highlands.
- Mainland Accessibility: Bypassing the usual Tasmanian export bottlenecks to provide a reliable, acclimatised supply to eastern seaboard collectors.

Detailed Description and Specs
The King Billy Pine (Athrotaxis selaginoides) is an endemic, evergreen conifer native to the mountainous terrain and temperate rainforests of western and central Tasmania. It belongs to the Cupressaceae family and is one of the three species in the ancient Athrotaxis genus.
In the wild, it can reach up to 30 metres tall, developing a conical canopy that often becomes asymmetrical and rugged in exposed alpine conditions. Its foliage is highly distinctive: thick, rigid, awl-shaped green leaves (7–18 mm long) that curve inward along the branchlets, resembling small claws. The bark is another spectacular feature, being soft, spongy, orange-brown, and deeply furrowed. It produces small, woody, globe-shaped seed cones.
- Species: Athrotaxis selaginoides (King Billy Pine)
- Foliage: Thick, incurved, awl-like green leaves.
- Bark: Soft, spongy, and deeply furrowed (orange-brown).
- Growth Rate: Extremely slow.
- Best For: Prestige native bonsai, Gondwana collections, and specialised cool-climate landscapes.
Care and Planting Guide
The King Billy Pine is a true cool-climate survivor, but it requires specific conditions to thrive outside of Tasmania.
- Sunlight & Location: Performs best in partial shade to full sun in cool climates. In mainland areas, it must be protected from hot, dry summer winds and scorching afternoon sun. A sheltered, misty, humid microclimate is ideal.
- Soil & Drainage: Prefers deep, rich, moisture-retentive soils with high organic matter. Excellent drainage is absolutely critical; it is highly susceptible to root rot (Phytophthora) if left in warm, waterlogged clay.
- Watering: Needs consistent moisture year-round. Mulch heavily with organic matter to keep the root zone cool during the summer months.
- Bonsai Culture: Potted specimens require a highly aerated, premium bonsai mix (e.g., pumice/akadama) to ensure perfect drainage while retaining enough moisture for the roots.
