Cenarrhenes nitida, commonly known as the Port Arthur Plum, is a rare and elegant evergreen shrub or small tree native to the cool temperate rainforests of southern Tasmania. Belonging to the family Proteaceae, this species is notable for its glossy, deep green, leathery leaves and its delicate, small white to cream flowers that appear in spring. The Port Arthur Plum produces dark purple, plum-like fruit, which are edible and highly prized in native plant collections. Its compact, bushy form and ornamental fruit make it an attractive addition to gardens with cooler climates.

Height and Spread

Cenarrhenes nitida typically grows to 2–4 metres in height in cultivation, though it may occasionally reach up to 6 metres in ideal conditions. It develops a dense, upright, bushy form, with a canopy spread of 1.5–3 metres. The species can be grown as a multi-stemmed shrub or trained to a small single-trunked tree, making it suitable for garden beds, borders, or sheltered native plant collections.

Preferred Soil Type and pH

The Port Arthur Plum thrives in moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils, with a pH range of 5.5–6.8. It tolerates sandy loam or clay loam soils, provided they are well-draining. Incorporating compost or leaf litter at planting improves soil structure and fertility. Avoid waterlogged or heavy clay soils, as these conditions can lead to root rot.

Light and Temperature

Cenarrhenes nitida grows best in partial shade to full sun, ideally with some protection from the harshest afternoon sun in warmer regions. It is naturally adapted to cool, moist climates and tolerates light frost once established. In hotter, drier areas, it will require protection from intense sun and heat stress to maintain healthy foliage and flowering.

Watering and Fertilising

Regular watering is essential, particularly during dry periods and while the plant is establishing itself. Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid waterlogging. Apply a low-phosphorus, slow-release fertiliser designed for Australian native plants in spring and again in mid-summer to support healthy growth and flowering. Mulching around the base with leaf litter or fine bark helps retain moisture and protect roots from temperature extremes.

Pruning and Maintenance

Cenarrhenes nitida requires minimal pruning. Remove dead, damaged, or diseased branches as needed to maintain shape and airflow. Light pruning after flowering can encourage bushier growth and improve the display of flowers and fruit the following season. Avoid heavy pruning, which may reduce flowering and fruit production.

Pests and Diseases

The Port Arthur Plum is generally hardy but can be susceptible to fungal diseases, particularly root rot (Phytophthora) if soil drainage is poor. Leaf spot and minor insect pests, such as scale insects or aphids, may occasionally appear but can usually be managed with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap. Ensuring proper soil drainage and avoiding overwatering is the best preventative measure.

Propagation

Cenarrhenes nitida can be propagated from seed or semi-hardwood cuttings. Seeds should be sown fresh in autumn or winter and may require pre-treatment, such as scarification or smoke water, to enhance germination. Cuttings taken in late summer to early autumn, treated with rooting hormone and placed in a well-drained propagation mix, generally root successfully. Patience is required, as growth can be slow in the early stages.

Cenarrhenes nitida, the Port Arthur Plum, is a rare and captivating shrub suited to cool, temperate Australian gardens. With glossy foliage, delicate flowers, and striking plum-like fruit, it offers year-round interest for native plant enthusiasts. Preferring acidic, well-drained soils and partial sun, this low-maintenance plant is ideal for collectors, bush gardens, or sheltered garden beds. Its combination of ornamental foliage, flowers, and edible fruit makes it an enriching addition to any cool-climate garden.
