If you are looking to buy a Ginkgo biloba in Australia, you are securing one of the most historically significant and visually stunning trees on earth. Unlike modern cultivars bred to grow like narrow telephone poles, our stock is the true, straight species. This ensures you get the classic, wide-spreading canopy that makes the Ginkgo such a spectacular shade tree, and provides the essential horizontal branching structure required by bonsai artists.

  • Unrivalled Autumn Gold: The foliage transitions uniformly to a spectacular, luminous yellow, providing one of the most reliable and dramatic autumn displays in the botanical world.
  • Ancient Genetics: The straight species maintains the robust, spreading growth habit of its wild ancestors, making it infinitely superior to narrow, modern cultivars for bonsai styling.
  • Incredibly Resilient: Having survived for millions of years, the Ginkgo is highly tolerant of urban pollution, pests, and varying soil conditions.
  • Unique Foliage Texture: The distinct, bi-lobed, fan-shaped leaves provide a gorgeous textural contrast in both landscape gardens and bonsai collections.

Complete Your Collector's Display

The brilliant, fleeting golden foliage of the Ginkgo biloba demands a permanent, dark backdrop to truly make the colour pop. Pair it with the rugged, deep greens of a Japanese Black Pine or the silvery-blue elegance of a Japanese White Pine to create a spectacular year-round contrast in your garden or on your bonsai bench.

★★★★★
"I specifically wanted the straight species for a bonsai project, not a columnar street tree. The stock provided was excellent—thick trunk, healthy buds, and it threw amazing autumn colour."
— Chen W., Bonsai Enthusiast (Katoomba, NSW)
★★★★★
"We planted this as a feature shade tree in our front yard. The purchasing process was seamless, and watching the leaves turn to pure gold in May is my favourite part of the year."
— Fiona M., Homeowner (Ballarat, VIC)
★★★★★
"It arrived perfectly dormant in winter as expected, and pushed out the most beautiful, vibrant green fan leaves this spring. Very healthy stock from a great nursery. The biosecurity process was seamless and very well organised."
— David H., Plant Collector (Hobart, TAS)
Why did my Ginkgo arrive without any leaves?
Ginkgo biloba is strictly deciduous. Because our pre-orders are dispatched in late autumn/winter after passing biosecurity, the tree will be fully dormant. It will look like a bare stick—this is perfectly natural and healthy! It will push out fresh green leaves when the weather warms in spring.
Are these trees male or female?
Because these are the straight, seed-grown species, they are unsexed at this young age. Ginkgo trees generally do not reveal their sex until they reach sexual maturity, which can take 20 years or more.
Can I keep a Ginkgo in a pot?
Yes, absolutely. While they can grow into massive shade trees in the ground, their root systems respond very well to container growing, which is why they have been cultivated as premium bonsai for centuries.

Detailed Description and Specs

There is nothing quite like the Ginkgo biloba. Its delicate, fan-shaped leaves flutter beautifully in the breeze throughout spring and summer, providing a soft, dappled shade. But its true magic reveals itself in late autumn, when the entire canopy turns a brilliant, glowing golden-yellow before dropping its leaves, revealing a rugged, deeply textured winter silhouette.

For the bonsai practitioner, the straight species of Ginkgo offers an incredibly rewarding challenge. Unlike modern columnar cultivars, the straight species naturally develops a spreading canopy and lateral branches. While their thicker branches and larger leaves require patience to refine, a mature Ginkgo bonsai displaying its autumn gold is considered an absolute masterpiece on any display bench. They are highly favoured for creating striking “Flame” 帚立ち (Hokidachi) style bonsai.

A Note on Deciduous Winter Stock: Please note that the Ginkgo biloba is strictly deciduous. Because our pre-orders are dispatched in Late May 2026 (after clearing mandatory biosecurity treatments), your tree will arrive fully dormant. It will look like a bare trunk with no leaves—this is perfectly natural, healthy, and exactly how it should look! It is simply sleeping, and will reward you by pushing out spectacular fresh green fan-leaves as soon as the weather warms in spring.

Care and Planting Guide

The Ginkgo biloba is famous for its resilience, but providing the right conditions will ensure maximum growth and the best possible autumn colour.

  • Sunlight & Location: They thrive in full sun to partial shade. Full sun exposure ensures the most brilliant golden colour during the autumn transition.
  • Soil & Drainage: Highly adaptable, but prefers deep, well-draining soil. If growing as a bonsai, use a standard deciduous mix with plenty of moisture-retaining organics balanced with draining aggregate.
  • Watering: They enjoy consistent moisture during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce watering significantly during winter when the tree is dormant and leafless.
  • Winter Dormancy: This is a deciduous tree. It will drop all of its leaves in late autumn. Do not panic if your tree arrives as a bare trunk during our winter dispatch window—it is perfectly healthy and sleeping until spring!
