The Unbreakable Pine of the Coastline
The Maritime Pine (Pinus pinaster), sometimes known as the Cluster Pine, is a legendary Mediterranean survivor. Capable of shrugging off blistering sun, poor sandy soils, and extreme coastal salt spray, it is the ultimate species for challenging coastal acreages and windbreaks. Due to increasingly strict international commercial seed pathways, securing Maritime Pine in Australia has become exceptionally difficult. Rather than rushing, SVF has taken a meticulous approach. We have recently secured a highly limited batch of pure specimens that we are currently repotting and acclimatising in robust 200mm pots for future release. Simultaneously, we are monitoring mature, heritage stands in the Southern Highlands to secure our own estate-grown seed crop for future tubestock runs. Join the waitlist today to secure your place for our upcoming 200mm release of this magnificent, deeply fissured coastal giant.

A NOTE ON STOCK AVAILABILITY*
*SVF built its foundation on this species, originally supplying it from local Australian seed. Due to current international seed import barriers, the Maritime Pine is temporarily out of stock. We are actively acclimatising a limited run of 200mm pots—please join the waitlist to be notified the moment they are rooted and ready for national dispatch!
The Pinus pinaster (Maritime Pine or Cluster Pine) is a rugged, fast-growing conifer native to the western Mediterranean basin. It is instantly recognisable by its exceptionally long, stout, bright green needles (often 15–25cm in length) and its magnificent bark, which matures into deep, reddish-brown plates and fissures. In its youth, it forms a dense pyramidal shape before losing its lower branches to create a tall, clear trunk topped with a sweeping, domed canopy.
Because it naturally grows in some of the most hostile, sandy coastal environments in Europe, it is the premier choice for Australian coastal properties that require a massive, unbreakable windbreak. It thrives in deep, nutrient-poor sands where other trees simply starve. If you want to buy a Maritime Pine, joining the SVF waitlist guarantees you priority access to our upcoming stock.
- Unbreakable Coastal Windbreak: Laughs at coastal gales and salt spray. It is the definitive pioneer species for stabilising sandy coastal acreages.
- Loves Poor, Sandy Soil: Do not waste fertiliser on this tree! It actively thrives in deep, fast-draining, nutrient-poor sandy soils and harsh droughts.
- Priority Waitlist Access: Due to extreme rarity in the mainland market, our waitlisted customers will receive immediate first access to our new 200mm release.
- Majestic Form: The combination of incredibly long green needles, clustered spiky cones, and deeply furrowed bark makes for a spectacular feature.

Detailed Description and Specs
The Maritime Pine (Pinus pinaster), also widely known as the Cluster Pine, is a fast-growing, medium-to-large coniferous tree native to the western Mediterranean, particularly flourishing along the coasts of Portugal, Spain, and France.
It is heavily utilised globally for timber and resin production, but in the landscape, it is prized for its extreme ruggedness. It features exceptionally long, stout, paired green needles (15–25cm long) and produces distinctive, glossy reddish-brown cones that often cluster together on the branches. As the tree matures, the lower branches naturally shed, exposing a tall, straight trunk covered in spectacular, deeply fissured, reddish-brown bark.
- Species: Pinus pinaster (Maritime Pine / Cluster Pine)
- Foliage: Exceptionally long, bright green paired needles.
- Cones: Large, glossy, reddish-brown with sharp prickles.
- Growth Rate: Fast (in well-draining, warm environments).
- Best For: Coastal windbreaks, deep sandy soils, and Mediterranean landscapes.
Care and Planting Guide
The Maritime Pine is a pioneer species that actively thrives in conditions that would starve or dehydrate most other trees.
- Sunlight & Location: Must be planted in full, uninterrupted sun. It is highly tolerant of severe winds and direct coastal salt spray.
- Soil & Drainage: Fast, deep drainage is absolutely critical. It thrives in deep sandy soils, gravels, and poor, nutrient-deficient ground. It will struggle and succumb to root rot if planted in heavy, perpetually waterlogged clay.
- Watering: Water deeply to establish the taproot during its first season. Once established, it is highly drought-resistant and requires no supplemental watering.
- Fertiliser: None required. It is perfectly adapted to poor soils.
